Which American animated TV series/film is most similar to Evangelion in terms of tone and theme, what would you choose?

Kneejerk reaction were those two as well.

Bit surface level in that a lot of the underlying symbolism isn't present, but apart from that a pretty solid comparison

The movies function on their own terms. If people can't accept them on those terms, and keep expecting them to be NGE, then they probably should have realized a while ago that they weren't going to have a good time. ~ Words of wisdom courtesy of Reichu

BoJack Horseman.

Show that initially comes off as exactly what it seems (in this case, low brow adult animated comedy), only to pull out the rug from under the audience and turn out to be a brutally honest exploration of its fucked-up cast.

Good point, didn't think of that at all

Except for Todd, who never really got probed the way he should've. It seemed like they were starting to this season, but unfortunately, it's the last season. And speaking of last seasons, that's when Moral Orel becomes Evangelion-esque in this regard. It was cancelled too soon, IMO.

Apocalypse Now for it's depiction how War films don't consider the injustice committed by all conflicting parties and the lasting effects people suffer from.

The same how Eva depicts what happens in Anime and Mecha wouldn't be without horrors.

Blade Runner for it's Cyberpunk setting affected by cataclysmic events, in which humans have it harder to preserve their survival and artificially created humans, meant to be superior than normal humans are seen as a threat, who can be only stopped by officials hired specifically against them.

The same with Eva taking place in a near futuristic setting with Tokyo 3 after 2I, when Angels threaten humanitys survival and are fought with the bio mechanical weapons, the Evas piloted by juveniles specifically chosen to pilot them.

I would say Moral Orel as well. It's a pretty basic show heavily inspired by shows the creator grew up with, it originally was supposed to be a parody of Leave it to Beaver style 50's sitcoms. Because of personal issues the story took a much darker and introspective look and made you think a lot about the characters and what their actual living and relationship dynamics would be in a world like the one portrayed on TV.
