I seem to have the precise opposite problem. EoTV had led me to believe that Asuka would survive whatever ordeal she went through in EoE. Watching that fight I kept thinking that somehow, someway, she's gonna get through it.

Then her arm got sliced in half and she turned into a Longinus pincushion.

...

I don't think a fictional death ever affected me like that. Had to rewatch the scene like 50 times the next day just to come to terms with it. And then I kept watching it. Again and again, until it became an addiction.

I'm pretty sure this is the first time I read about Stockholm Syndrome re: anime scene.

My original viewing of EoE was on a crappy TV with a crappy low-res version of the film. Complete with film grains and all that. I did not realize that the split-arm happened until someone mentioned it to me and I rewatched the movie looking for that scene with a much better version of the film.

and I was like  *WHADAFAAAAAAAAAAAA*

That split-arm thing totally made that scene a whole lot worse than just the pincushioning. I still have chills imagining that microsecond.

Yeah. The kitchen scene isn't as gruesome, but it had a much bigger impact on me. The beach scene was a pretty serious kick in the nuts, too. And the hospital scene . . . :cringe:

I so getting ripped apart and eaten by cannibals is just a flesh wound or taking a spear to the hands, or being shot, or falling apart are all just flesh wounds

Ok so time for some spoilers :
SPOILER: Show
She's resurrected in the end of the movie.

Keep that in mind and it'll be easier to look through that scene.

Seriously, that is the most fananked theory I've ever heard, more than Mari being Marty McFly travelling through time to keep her parents (Asushin) together. -- Jäeger

Kinda. Makes the whole process more-or-less trivial in the end, so it does add an awful lot of context to the scene.

Is this after Asuka vs MPE or after Instrumentality?
