I enjoy Eva because of it's sophistication and style. Some people say that if Eva returned to American television at this time, the show would become infected with noobs. However, this show isn't easily understood and you have to like it to a deeper level rather than on the surface.

The first month I finished the series with EOE, I was obsessed with Eva so much that my grades suffered. I kept watching the series and the movie over and over to find the hidden meanings. I love the characters so much. That's the secret to ANY great drama.

The reason(s) i like Eva so much are

1) Made me realize what a dull life I was living.......(a-social pc/gaming nerd)

2) Gave me my first anime character crush/obsession, with Asuka, but not like an attraction of sort, more like I related better to a person like her than anyone else - My mother didn't die when i was young, but I didn't have the best experience(s) when i lived overseas, and as a result, I got the same kinda defence mechanizm that she has only I know it and I'm beginning to take it apart(settling into a normal state of mind) when it comes to getting to know people and letting them into my space....

3) the first anime series that toyed with my emotions, and give me mindfucks - the what just happened feeling after watching EoE, I was so lost after watching that, that i joined the first forum i could find.....with a little help

4) But then there is the fact that Asuka is a girl...............

#1 is Rei. Rei alone makes this series worth watching.

#2 the psychological/philosophical aspects. It might bore some people, but I find them facsinating...

and finally, #3, it gives me a lot of stuff to think about. Thinking is good...

Seriously, would we even be talking about this 10 year old show if it didn't have Rei in it? I think not.

Its emotional authenticity; the sense that this meant something desperate and immediate to its creator. This is a demi-generational thing, but I felt EVA was saying the same things in its medium as Nirvana, NIN, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden were saying in theirs. Reading Anno's "like suicide" note in the manga in the summer of '95 just affirmed the resonance for me.

I can't really explain in mere words just why I found the series so captivating. I suppose the best I can do is say that it taught me a few things about myself that I wasn't willing to believe until I saw it in this (Anno's) creation... heard it from someone else's mouth, so to speak; another point of view but still very similar to my own - which can be invaluable.

The characters, so flawed, so damaged (especially Asuka), yet having to cope with something grander than the merely human, when purely human things were not easy for them.

Because EoE was so harrowing. (Soryu-san again.)

The fact that it was orders of magnitude more intellectually demanding than the harmless girls-with-guns anime titles (both of them) that I'd picked up in the preceeding weeks, that were my entire TV-series anime experience (beyond childhood exposure to Marine Boy).

Because it had an obvious Big Conspiracy from ep#2 - and were they really planning to launch a Singularity?

Because they were!

Like Titus, this was my first anime character obsession (as anyone who visits my humble Eva page will soon see) - only the weird thing about it was that I realised that this was not a "I wish she were my gf" as in previous character fixations of mine (Telzey Amberdon, passim.) but that I realized that I was thinking more in terms of foster-parent/child.

To paraphrase Bushwick Bill, Asuka is a short pilot quick to give a tall ass-whiping. Because Sadamoto draws them so long and lanky, we often forget just how short in fact most of the EVA characters are by grown-up American standards. Misato's, like, only 5'4" I believe,* and the Children are all shorter than her. Admittedly they're only 14, but...

Anno, of course, is considered the tallest man at Gainax; he's been drawn before hunched under ceilings, Krist Novoselic-style.

--C.

*Towering over the likes of Ruri-Ruri from EVA's contemporary NADESICO, whom I believe is literally no more than four feet high.

Well, Ruri was only 12. And she did have a rather large growth spurt in between the show and the movie. Baka baka.

Ano... What on Earth do heights have to do with being biased towards Asuka? Did I miss something?

BTW, how tall IS Anno, precisely?

He is 180 cm tall, pretty much a giant compared to most Japanese people.

I just find it gripping. I couldnt wait for the next episode, i just couldnt stop. Now years on i still talk and watch it now and again. To be honest its hard to sum up my love for this show. I would say the fact that when i watched this show i was about 14 as well, so you have the usual agnsty teen connection.
