I don't know, companies usually don't delay a film in a hush hush manner removing a pinned tweet while their official website and all sorts of marketing they have going on says the release date stands.
It's interesting enough to notice it, but it's nothing definitive.

As it is now, the alarm status lasts until the beginning of may in Japan, affecting only certain prefectures. So june is still a question mark. As for the movie itself, it could very well be finished. Or needing minor adjustments that could be done from home on computers (yeah, it's a different medium, but Smash Bros director Sakurai tweeted about how him and his team are working on the game from home).

I won't make predictions either way.

There was this now deleted twitter thread of a conversation someone had with a Khara employee who said they're gonna tweak the movie up until the very last moment, because they all want the movie to be as good as possible.

One way or the other, it means they're no longer certain of the release date. They probably took it down while they discuss what to announce publicly. It could still come out on June 27, but they may not know how effective working from home is for Khara at this stage.

The state of emergency could end in May, but by then Khara could find itself a month behind schedule and need to delay the release. Them unpinning the tweet it just a recognition that they're not sure which way this is going.

Polygon is doing all their work from home currently, but they're exclusively a CGI studio, so not sure if it's practical for 2D animation to be done from home as well.

Yeah, khara does key animation on paper, that has to be scanned in and stuff. But I suppose at this point they would be working on post, so digitally. But who knows.

they're gonna tweak the movie up until the very last moment, because they all want the movie to be as good as possible.

Yeah but at some point the film has to be done. Maybe they really plan/ed on working till the last possible moment. But the blurays also get additional improvements, and those also have to come out at some point. There's a moment the artist has to see the art as done so it can see the light of day. I don't know if Shin has reached the point, but I think it would be possible with less than 3 months left till the (supposed) release.

TL;DR - Evangelion Final more likely to be a 2021 release

Here's a list of films that have been pushed back from their original release dates which adds to my own suspicion that a delay is possible, especially if other films are getting pushed back (like No Time to Die and Black Widow) I don't think they'd want to compete with juggernauts like that if they can avoid it. That's not to say that they haven't been sent home from work as nonessential until this all blows over and can't finish the post production stuff anyway. The Olympics have been pushed to 2021 (instead of outright cancelled... which is unprecedented by the way) and given how anime is pirated so much as it is I don't think Khara would risk digital release even if the film is ready (which it's probably not) so a delay to 2021 more realistic than not.

By not telling its a soft transition change the date for release, my office did something similar with sending us all home with our work computers, two weeks of slow minor changes to things and then we were sent home. Khara is likely hedging their bets hoping things will improve by June 27th, but if they don't they will pull the film from release and push it out to a more acceptable date.

The film industry in general is gonna need to adapt. Spain is starting to do better, but it's still bad. Japan isn't Spain, and I still refuse to do predictions either way, but yeah, a june release looks difficult. But not only a june release. A late 2020 release, and a 2021 release. Like...after this is over, who will go to the cinema? (Keep in mind, "over" means a vaccine is out, everyone is vaccinated. EVERYONE.)

I kept saying it could be better by june, and well, it could be. But one factor I wasn't accounting for. People are scared. Much more than I am (I'm lucky that me and most people I personally know and care about are not at risk, though I fear for everyone else too obviously). Don't think being scared does any good, but it's only natural in many cases. WHO will go to a packed theater this, or next year?

If there is a film huge enough to try a new distribution model, it's Shin Eva. If not, I'm afraid it'll do less money at the box office than it could have. I hate to say it, because I feel truly sorry for Anno. It's just such a bummer. But june 27 isn't a day in the middle of an exciting summer anymore, just before the Japan Olympics, with people (including more casual audiences) wanting to see Eva at a theater.

So what are they (and everyone) gonna do? Leave a finished movie unreleased and unwatched for who knows how long? When we have just learned that the future is unpredictable?

I honestly hope they can still pull it off, this was going to be their year (rember the 2020 Eva logo). As much as I've said I don't like cinemas, just the thought of an Eva film releasing and people going to see it is incredibly exciting. This movie doesn't deserve this, just as none of us deserve this shit.

I still think they should continue as if nothing was happening, build up the excitement (would be pretty healthy too I think, if there is one thing that is helping me in this situation it is seeing certain things continue normally, those that can savely continue anyway) and develop a plan B, if a june release is a no go, then change to plan B.

But why delay the film? Say they delay it to november. What guarantee is there things will be fine in november/people will go to the cinema then? And sadly, same for 2021 honestly.

Edit: Also if any member here/lurker here happens to be a millionaire or something, consider helping khara out lol.

Edit2: Actual idea for a distribution model.
You release a new film on streaming platforms. It's a payment for a period of time. One day. Or half a day. Make it expensive (after all, you aren't spending money and time to go to the cinema, buy extra food or drinks, aren't paying per family member, etc.) As months go by, the price gets lower per watch. Finally, after a period of time, the film becomes available to permanently purchase.
About piracy concerns...like half of Star Wars IX was leaking on twitter the day it came out. I don't think much would change. People who'd rather go out of their way to search for a download and all that stuff would do so either way.

I think you're vastly overestimating or maybe underestimating the average person. I don't know when the movie will be released, but I do know that the moment restrictions are lifted nearly everyone will go back to the same exact behavior they had before. Cinemas and concert halls will continue to be packed full, and it will be business as usual.

People are social creatures, no matter how much netflix and other streaming services wish that wasn't the case.

I'm not even that scared and I sure won't go to any cinema when there's a risk transmission. For a long time.
Anyway, forcing poeople to go there when there is a pandemic would be like the worst thing this distribution model has done yet.

Once there's a scientifically proven methods to fight this virus - a vaccine will come and happen in 2021 but my hope/believe is in the next few months we'll have found the right medicinal cocktail that drastically lessens the virus' effectiveness - and it has been properly distributed that's when things will start recovering. It will take time - people who lost their job will have to get them back or find new ones, lost people will be properly mourned, venues reset, and some people will need time to properly readjust to the idea of going outside and some people may never recover etc - but as justacrazyguy said, people are SOCIAL creatures.

Once things are undeniably safe there's going to be a boom in social events. In the West after the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic (virus actually likely started in Kansas, just got named the Spanish flu) there was an explosion in music, entertainment, parties, etc. I expect something similar will happen now as well. People say they want everything convenient and in their house but now that they have no choice there's a desire. That goes for cinemas as well.

2020 globally is going to be a shit year for the movie business worldwide and all businesses really. 2021 may start off on the wrong foot because we'll likely - hopefully - be coming out of this pandemic but I think Fall 2021 onward there's going to be a major boost in social engagement.

As for Final I think they're gonna hold it until Summer 2021. Toho clearly had their sights set on Evangelion being their big summer release and had it not been for the Olympics taking place in Tokyo I'm sure Evangelion would have been given the choice third weekend of July release that all of Toho's biggest films are released on - almost all Miyazaki films came out on that weekend and after the surprise of Your Name so did Shinkai's Weathering With You. Because they didn't want to compete with the Olympics - which would have entirely taken over the city and all attention from Final - they chose a late June date. They're gonna lose that date and that choice summer box office and because they were marketing the movie two years out - I can't think of any other movie period that had a teaser trailer saying "Two Years From Now" - they clearly had high HIGH hopes. Since Miyazaki's next film sounds like it won't be ready for another few years, Shinkai hasn't started production on a new film yet and unless they want to give the primo summer release to a Pokemon or Shin Ultraman I think they'll just save Final for next year.
It's another delay in a series of delays for the Rebuild series but it is one that is understandable, practical and safe. The crew could all hunker down, stay safe and then when things start to become better they can regroup and put the finishing touches on the movie (And get that score recorded).

I'll place my bet down on June 25, 2021

I could live with a delay to 2021, but I honestly also think it's kinda absurd that this movie will keep not coming out when it's close to finished. Especially when there's no guarantee things will be fine in 2021.
Hopefully some sort of medicine comes out, but that would need to be tested too. I don't know how long that takes.

My biggest fear right now is that I won't be able to visit friends or family, or continue my studies. That's why the idea of a packed cinema seems kind of absurd to me. Maybe I'm just turning too negative after an entire month of quarantine alone.

Interesting to note that Japan can't actually force people to stay at home, and when the last Fate/stay night movie came out people went to see it in droves. But that's not good in retrospect.

Well it's "coming soon".
Soon being when they realize that this pandemic will go on for a long time. I think I'm becoming fairly confident this is how it'll go. Or it comes out next year or 2022, but that's not soon is it?

I honestly don't want this movie in a theater, potentially causing another spread. I don't want to see it come out 2021 or later either. I just hope khara can release the film when and how they want, and I'll just hope that happens to line up with what I want.
SPOILER: Show
An earlier bluray release, renting it through streaming, whatever, costing big money if needed. And this is how I would want all movie studios to act.

I really don't even want to think about there being a year or more left for me to see the film. But it'll be what it'll be. Honestly just seeing the poster and title has made me happy. The wait is hard, I hope it's not much longer, but it'll be worth it.
