It's not generally American audiences , it's specifically weeab/nerd audiences. Go to any regular movie release and you'll get the same quiet silence, but any anime movie that isn't produced by Studio Ghibli or isn't a sort of art film and you'll get howling audience and people with no respect for others. I remember when I went to go see the first Heaven's Feel movie in theaters, it was so obnoxious I almost wish I hadn't gone; meanwhile when I went with a friend to see Ride Your Wave it was very respectable and quiet.

So yeah, it's not American audiences, it's arrogant fan bases with no social awareness. If there's a US release of Final I'll definitely be on the fence on whether or not I even want to bother to see a theatrical release.

Cinemas holding films hostage? What? Look, even as someone who prefers a pristine home theater experience to some of the crappy screenings I’ve been to (they don’t show movies in film where I live and I gotta drive 45 minutes to a theater that enforces respectful audiences), that’s now what’s happening here. Theaters are where a lot of the best screenings take place. I want to see Shin Eva on the largest screen possible. I also was Shiro Sagisu to record fully orchestrated music in the way that pleases him best. The violin section won’t sound right unless you have (at the very least) the sound of 50 violins resonating within each others’ wooden chambers.

I dusted off my waiting mood when it comes to Shin Eva. I hated the fact that I had to do it, but I did it. I would prefer to wait even longer than to have production forced into something dangerous or rushed into something sub par.

The rowdy American cinemagoer stereotype isn't untrue, but I think it's endearing in some ways. My 4:30am showing of Infinity War in NYC's biggest IMAX lit up like an arena during the Wakanda scenes. Stark ( ) contrast to my 0:00am showing of Endgame in Tokyo which was dead silent until the very last line of the credits rolled off the screen. Apparently Toho Shibuya has certain screenings better suited for Western audiences where getting a little loud isn't as disrespectful as a normal domestic showing. The rowdy Infinity War showing is probably one of my favorite experiences in a theater because the audience reflected the energy of the movie. I wouldn't want people yelling in something more meditative like Eva.

True, it really depends on the movie on hand. I've never been to an American cinema, but from what I've understood, American reactions to Q displeased Khara enough to lead to a redubbing.

Reminder that this is an opinion. I don't like it. I'm not asking for the disappearance of cinema, but for options.
Just like I can buy a videogame for a 1000$ PC or buy the same game for Nintendo Switch, with worse visuals but lots of other advantages. I can't understand how a lack of options is good. It's a lack of progress, antiquated.
Let's not kid ourselves, people are "forced" to go to the cinema because they make big bank.
I haven't even gotten into all the times I have had to watch films in 3D, something that I did not want and cost extra, because all 2D showings happened at unrealistic times. Like most businesses, people are an afterthought.

We had news on this same forum that Anno was apparently being forced to possibly make Shin Eva shorter than he wanted because cinemas want more showings per day.

@robersora: I've dealt with shit audiences both in Spain and Germany.

So one last thing on something that is ultimately off-topic. I might have exaggerated a lil bit with the cinema stuff. While I stand by all my criticisms and how an ideal film distribution would look for me, I was only thinking of negative experiences I've had (which to be fair are the majority), in some cases also caused by more personal issues (although I'd argue this is just another reason to change the system so different people can enjoy films how best fits them). I've had some great experiences at cinemas too (...thanks to the people I went with). Though I'd never watch Shin Eva, as an example, at a cinema (at least not for the first time).

SPOILER: Show
tbh I'm very volatile these days. I've been trapped for almost a month, alone, and the few times I leave the house to buy food I'm confronted with maybe the most depressing vistas I've ever been confronted with.

Anyway, I've thought about this, and until there are actual news I doubt I'll have anything more to say. It's speculation anyway.
In my humble opinion, it would be best for khara and Toho to continue as is. Till now Toho has been postponing movies when they reached the release month. Unless something definitive happens soon, if the future continues to be uncertain, they should keep marketing the film normally.
If the situation improves and they have cancelled all plans already, there might be no going back, and I think ideally they want the movie out in june. However, if they keep marketing the film and they then have to postpone it, that marketing effort doesn't go to waste. And they could just resume when they are ready. I think it's on the safer side to do that.

The speculation is over. The Japanese government is going to declare a state of emergency. A delay will practically be a done deal at this point.

Depends on how long it takes.
In Spain it gets extended in 15 day chunks. Nobody knows how long it will take, the hope is it will take as little as possible. I suspect Spain's quarantine will have taken two months by the end. What the situation looks like after that is a question mark.

Add the (probably cursed) Violet Evergarden movie to the list of movies delayed due to COVID-19. It was supposed to release later this month, now it's a generic "coming soon".

The question now is how close is the movie to being done. The emergency declaration in Japan could be done by June if things go well, how likely that is I can't say, but even in a best case scenario Khara might not be able to work on the film during this time.

Well, we've had an indication that the music recording is being held up.

Do we know for sure what Sagisu tweeted about was music for the movie?
Avant1 had music (though I think it wasn't quite done).

If Shiro Sagisu’s Tweets are accurate to what he’s doing that day he traveled to London and started recording music for Evangelion at Abbey Road Studios sometime around the start of March. Most likely a start date of March 2nd which is a Monday. Boris Johnson announced a lockdown for the UK on March 23rd with one of the stipulations banning any major gatherings. That would give Sagisu and his team a max of three weeks to compose the entire score and since his most recent tweet was about the limits of teleworking and using preexisting sources it’s a good sign he wasn’t finished. Normally a score for a major feature film from start to finish takes around 2 months to capture. Obviously more time is necessary the more intricate the music is and Sagisu’s glorious Rebuild scores are pretty complicated with a lot of tones, styles and big set pieces. At best, if Sagisu works at a pace twice as fast as the regular composer they got 75% of the score recorded.

Another interesting development. CERO, the Japanese rating board for videogames, is closed and will not rate videogames for a full month, delaying everything that would have been sent for review now. It the same happens to Eirin, Japan's movie regulator, everything will be delayed.

Today I've seen plenty of stuff announcing closure in Japan.

∆ That's the type of mentality we DON'T need in a situation like this.

The khara/Eva twitter accounts don't have the poster+release date as their pinned tweet anymore.
Let's see if that means something.
