That might the most over the top thing I've ever seen in EVA, utter madness . I was fairly confident that the tower in the poster was Tokyo Tower, but it was it's "older sibling" as it turns out, but Paris looked really good. And now to slip into anxiety as I have to wait another year to see the rest.

Also, mad props to Sagisu's score once again, really liked the music.

Misato has one line of dialogue at the end over the radio. The Wunder is flying overhead the entire scene which is why physics are merely guidelines.

I really enjoyed this opening. Even at the 1/10th (and that's being generous) quality seen so far. I truly hope Khara releases the entire scene online because it looks like they're really going for something visually spectacular & I would love to pore every detail between now and the full films release. I didn't grasp most of what was being said - lots of classic Eva technobabble - but I got the major beats and I am very curious to see where the story goes next! I'm assuming the vey next sequence would go right into what the original three pilots are up to (I knew Shinji wasn't going to be in the shared scenes)

Curious that they didn't release the films full title or share any further info regarding a release date. Perhaps this will render any late July info release for the film mute and this will have to hold us over to the end of the year. However they tease the film next though they won't be able to rely on just utilizing material from the opening sequence. I'm still thinking their may be some kind of short teaser attached to Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You but I've been wrong before.

It's going to be an interesting year.

Oh, and I've always adored her character but I am absolutely head over heels in love with the badass glow up Maya Ibuki has gone through.

First of all, Anno confirming Lilith for Smash was kinda unexpected, tbh.
Second of all, neither Megumi Ogata nor Yoko Takahashi were in the AVANT01 teaser, kinda funny they presented it. I mean, Sagisu lives in Paris from what I've gathered? And his score is in the movie, so it would make sense for him to be there.

Also, 3.0+1.0 really just was Anno's complicated way of implying that this movie will directly happen after 3.0 and they really stick to the Jo-Ha-Kyu // Kishōtenketsu structure with this movie series. Kinda neat.

The first 10 minutes of Anno’s Shin Eva successfully outdoes all of del Toro’s Pacific Rim, as far as the visuals are concerned.
Watching this on Eva Monkey’s livestream has GoatJesus complaining that the first 10 minutes isn’t the whole movie, which is understandable, but not reasonable in any way.

Yes, it just looks delicious. I'm on board with an action spectacle when it's realized like this!
Goat Jesus is kind of a tragic figure, very bright, sure... Imagine hating Evangelion for 10 years, but still coming back to be disappointed. Very sad.

The restoration of the Paris CBD from the red wasteland opens up some interesting possibilities for where the rest of the film could go. Is a good end possible?

Evangelion Road Trip - 26 Episodes featuring Wille reclaiming wastelands - one every week. Hilarity ensues. Be prepared for iconic sights and shenanigans of the Wille-crew such as:
Dubai (Ritsuko: this is already a cultural and ecological wasteland so why bother? - Misato slaps Ritsuko angrily)
Jamaika: (featuring Maya getting high and just F E E L I N G ritchan)
London: (Mari's parents DO NOT agree with her career choices)
All the while Shinji being all blasé and ennui in Paris, smoking cigarettes all filmed in nouvelle vague style, why not.

Obviously it ended up being the half-English girl destroying the most iconic symbol of French architecture.
"Sorry, Mr Eiffel" isn't going to cut it, Mari.

Just another reason why I love the marketing of the 3.0 and 3.0+1.0. So many nifty, witty little details! Like, of course they're going to present it in Paris, when the scene is taking place there!
Way to throw a curveball that makes more sense of it all in retrospect. And yes, seeing an European city realized in all of Khara's MEGA-ANIMATION glory was amazing.

Also, mad props to Sagisu's score once again, really liked the music.

YAAAASSSS, he stayed it. I like the Spanishy guitars especially, even if it's a mismatch with the scene taking place in Paris, though.

Another thing, the visual effect used for the purifying was exactly the same as used in EoTV Ep 26 when the darkness gets wiped away and the congratulations scene begins

Those Angel things look like continuations of the Mark.04 series (notice how they just keep on adding "4"s now instead of changing the letter...).

Recording must have been fun with tongue twisters like these. Ogata said something like Anno wanted it to be perfect so they had to repeat lines over and over and over and over.

Here's hoping we still get the "three children in the red wastes" scene after the title card.

I'm sure Avant02 will be them walking the dessert... At least I couldn't think of it being anything else.

Minor correction to the news article:

A string of flying Mass Production Evas(?) are about to attack them so Mari launches in Unit-08 and starts flying through the air and firing at them (we’ve seen a preview of this bit before). She eventually runs out of ammunition and starts to kick and punch them, eventually prevailing by bunching them all together and causing them to explode.

She overheated barrels due to intensive fire, to the point of meltdown.

They actually do refer to it as a sealing pillar, if Google translate is corect - while Ritsuko is walking across the top of it while regretting the fate of the City of Lights. It seems to have been dropped in alongside the Arc Du Triomphe and is sitting at a slightly skewed angle.

When I saw the DSRV (an exploratory submarine) my first theory was that Wille were trying to open a gateway into Guf and send a recon team through. In light of what happens, it is instead apparent that the submersible was being used as a crew transfer capsule.

Pinkie Kitakami seems to have grown up a little - she's not panicing or as tentative as before, though she does get a moment complaining about have to wear plugsuits - which she refers to as 'shameful'. Neat comedy beat there too - when she complains she's on the ladder down from the DSRV, then Maya chews her out and we INSTANTLY cut to Kitakami seated and typing away furiously.

Lovely detail with Mari's cockpit shots - the wheel interface for Unit-08's new augements make it look like she's engaged in a car-chase, and they frame some of the shots accordingly when she's spinning it furiously.

Also, get ready for new shipping wars, because both times that Mari calls out to Sumire Nagara on the radio, the French subtitles have her call Nagara "my little one" - need a read on the original Japanese here. It might just be another Mari nickname, but it almost feels like a pet-name.

Maya really has become tough and no-nonsense, and once again repeats that she hates younger guys. Yet she also pauses for a moment of softness when she places her palms together and in prayer promises to complete the work of the people who wanted to see Paris saved.

And Ritsuko just staring down the oncoming battleship like a boss!

Initial thoughts on the preview:

Not surprised the first 10 minutes focuses directly on action. This is a similar trend to what we've seen from the last 3 movies.

I really enjoyed watching the cohesive teamwork of Will-E. Maiya might actually have a role in this movie and she did look cute in her suit!

Defeating the Angel with the Eiffel Tower is so Anno. It harkens back to the ship crash in Nadia. I wonder if we'll continue to get more Nadia call backs.

As expected, we're still not given any answers to our questions from 3.0, and I do feel like people have a right to complain about that. If 3.0 was set up, than we are owed explanations in this movie, including Mari's role in these films.

I expect the next scene to cut to the wandering trio and I can't wait to see how Anno and his staff handles the conversations between those 3. Will Shinji lose his marbles in front of Asuka. Part of me freaking hopes so!

What I took away from this was that we're getting more hints on the intervening years. The Wille crew appears to be completing work started (unsucessfully) by others - Maya offers a prayer to those who hoped to save Paris, and the techs state that they're picking up the restart process from Stage 4. They end at Stage 5, so presumable Stages 1-3 had been carried out by the people who started the work.

There's a bit of french written on the bulkhead next to Maya's terminal before she offers her prayer, but its a bit low-res to make out. Anyone got a bead on that?

Edit: it appears to read Je Vons Laisse - I leave you. A goodbye message written by someone about to die?

EDIT: The block next to the JA-02 appears to contain (according to the rather fuzzy label) - Production Type Eva Torso Restraining Gear. There's another word in there but the red-tinted vision from Mari's entry plug makes it tricky to discern.

Okay, it's really subtle, but at around 8.58 in the linked video, something interesting happens. There's a shot looking past Maya's arm to one of the landing struts of the DSRV, and the 'turned to core' effect is slowly creeping up it. Guess that's the L-Field or L-Barrier in action, hence why Wille were on a time-limit.

The same appears to very briefly happen to the mass of 44Bs that Mari hurls into the ground, right before they explode.

Not sure I like that they went the predictable route of starting this movie with yet another action sequence - but at least it was entertaining. I wonder if the movie will focus on them trying to restore earth or this was just a stop for supplies before attacking NERV.

Also, did anyone catch that last scene with Mari near the end, she did this head turn and stare which was identical to one of her shots from the 2.0 preview going into 3.0. Neat.
