Interesting, another option would be to return Shinji's soul/mind wrapped in Yui's body(basically Unit 01 lost the "template" for Shinji's body and substituted it with the one for Yui, just because things just weren't screwy enough in the first place

There's potential for comedy, but I don't see how it would fix anything in itself - though it would create problems, of course. I suppose a sex-change could make one or more characters better if it led to situations that would actually help them to resolve their issues.

Like, say, people talking more - to the point where they might actually discuss something important to them.
Or higher levels of sexual frustration resulting in a drive to socialise more...? (then again, chemical castration/libido-suppressors...?)
Embarrassing/humiliating incidents, and covering/damage control for them revealing the concern/care of others...?

All someone needs to do is change a few names, publish that, and they'll be the next global publishing sensation! E.L. James managed to turn a Twilight fanfic into a legend in 50 Shades of Grey, why can't we do the same with Evangelion? (Oh, 50 Shades of Kaworu's Light Grey Hair...that works!)

I do have an idea: Kaworu isn't a replacement pilot for Asuka but he's the one sent alongside Unit 02 in the first place. Possible explanation could be that Asuka failed to get her shit together after Kyoko's death and got replaced. It also allowed SEELE to take a more direct role in shaping events by having an inside man right from the beginning.

I don't have anything against her, I just don't see how she would come into the picture as anything but a minor character. If it is a girl!Shinji/Kaworu fic, Asuka is irrelevant in the larger scheme of things as Kaworu is not the kind of guy who would go after multiple girls at the same time; if Asuka were to try and claim Kaworu for herself, Kaworu would just plain tell her that he can't be what she wants him to be. I think there's been more than enough depictions of Asuka as a crazed yandere, let's not make another.

Maybe there should be a Godwin's law against referring to Twilight, but the trouble is that Twilight clones, Hunger Games clones and Twilight/Hunger Games hybrids are on a rampage and there's no stopping them. Romeo and Juliet with all of its teenage obsessive infatuation in Shakespearean verse can barely compare with these monstrosities. There was an unholy lot of potential for that kind of thing given Kaworu's angelic nature.

Played straight, it would just be another Shoujo romance. Unless you're doing an old-fashioned melodrama like Oniisama E with the Shinjiko x Kaworu relationship, in which case that kind of thing might be worth looking at for nostalgia's sake.

Wasn't by choice on his part. He surrendered, yes; but he had no prior knowledge that NERV is going to vivisect him without anesthetics to find out what makes him tick. Not that he really minds.

Why? What's the point of her being in the story? If we take out the options of her being the losing edge of a love triangle or one half of the beta couple, she rapidly becomes insignificant for the plot.

I don't have anything against Shojo, that is of course assuming its Good. As in the characters have actual personality instead of being blank dull self inserts.

Toradora's a good example of a romance manga done right, though I'm not sure how Evas darker moments would mesh with the tone of a romantic comedy.

I assume Kensuke and Touji would hang out with Kaworu (how would he react to their shenanigans)? Would Toji ask Shinjiki out? Would Kaworu and Toji get into a fight over it? Would Hikari be best friends with Shinjiki instead of Touji and Kensuke?

Depends. I like to portray girl!Shinji (it's a gender-neutral name so no need to change it) as a tomboy who buddies with Toji and Kensuke instead of other girls, if only to defy the usual expectations of her being a frail and emotionally vulnerable flower. In my head, girl!Shinji is flat-chested, wears no jewelry or girlish/revealing clothes and is pretty much the plainest plain girl you can meet. However, I do admit that she's very easy to sexualize; I myself wrote a short story where boy!Asuka has a quite explicit wet dream about her, after all.

I don't think Toji would date Shinji; more like keep an eye on her suitors to see if anyone tries to use her.

Since you guys took issue with Asuka getting sidelined, I have an alternate idea: plot proceeds normally until the preparations for Israfel Round Two where, instead of Asuka getting pissed and running out of the apartment, Shinji is the one who runs away after Asuka lets loose a more scathing than usual insult. As she's moping in a park, Kaworu walks up to her and strikes up a conversation; SEELE didn't specifically forbid him from coming to the city so early and they don't really care what he does in his free time as long as he still agrees to go ahead with their plans, hence why he's here. Mind you, he doesn't join NERV yet but keeps popping up every now and then.
