Harris & Skarsgard is perfect casting. Show appears to be getting universally great reviews.

Also Netflix has a documentary City40 about the city that was contaminated by the 1957 Kyshtym Soviet Nuclear disaster.

The Mayak plant’s management has also overseen the dumping of its waste into nearby lakes and rivers, which flow into the River Ob and on into the Arctic Ocean. Over four decades, Mayak is said to have dumped 200 million curies of radioactive waste into the environment, equal to four “Chernobyls”, although this is always denied by the authorities.

According to some Ozersk residents, the dumping continues today. One of the nearby lakes has been so heavily contaminated by plutonium that locals have renamed it the “Lake of Death” or “Plutonium Lake”. The radioactive concentration there is reported to exceed 120 million curies – 2.5 times the amount of radiation released in Chernobyl.

It Part 2 trailer

https://youtu.be/jRgIeIY9kMg

Spoils one of the best scenes of the novel in its entirety.
I was...pretty find of Part 1, I didn't think it was amazing.

SPOILER: Show
They really took all the subtlety and psychological terror out of the scene featured here and made it a jumpscare fest (of the look how I weirdly walk around variety). Not for me :/
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

After numerous false starts and cancellations, it looks like Hollywood's Akira adaptation is finally moving forward.

Directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows)

Release date is May 14th, 2021

Waititi has indicated that he's committed to avoid whitewashing the cast and that his film will be moreso an adaptation of the manga storyline than the '88 film.

Unless the movie is over 3 hours long that ain't happening. Even 4 hours is probably too little unless they have masters of script writing and editing in their team.

Boy do I look forward to see Akira with absurd amounts of CG crap all over the screen. The Akira anime movie had plenty of problems, but at least it was visually amazing. This movie would surprise me if it managed to be average.

I'm pretty certain that they're only going to make a film that covers up to a certain point in the manga, and then have a cliffhanger or other type of leading ending that leaves open the possibility of a sequel. There's absolutely no way the manga can be condensed into a single film.

The way you make this movie work financially is you cast a bunch of unknown Asian actors in the lead roles and keep that part of the budget relatively small (which seems to be the direction Waititi is heading in). You then also hire maybe one A-lister with a personal connection to Waititi in a supporting role and pay him $5 million. The film already has name recognition attached to it from Waititi's involvement, so they shouldn't need to do a lot of stunt-casting to get people interested. Plus it's Akira, so most people will be drawn to it from that alone. That should free up a lot of the budget that'll need to be used for the needed sets and effects.

Basically, Rambo + Sicario + Logan + Home Alone...
It's good with his old age that they go back to focusing on him building traps and being tactical from the 1st film rather then the comparatively in your face bombastic style he had in 2-4.

Update.

The Dark Crystal Age Of Resistance Teaser. Got to say this looks amazing they promised practical effects like the oringal and they kept to there word.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwcvJTVnUgc&ab_channel=RapidTrailer

Since the Gremlins reboot is clearly stuck in reboot hell its nice to know that the Critters franchise is having an amazing rebirth. I also love that there bringing back Dee wallace as I met her once at comic con and she is such a great fun person. Its also great that its not a soft reboot but a direct sequel to the 80's films which adds more to the canon.

Really damn good. The early comparisons to Stranger Things were unfounded, the tone is extremely different much bleaker & unnerving.

Teaser for the live action Mulan is out.

For comparison...
The fantastic early teaser for the original film (still among my favorite teasers ever)
Restored HD version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XPc6bw6l9c

Teaser for the new film - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01ON04GCwKs

Visually it looks great. Not sure I like the emphasis being put on her being pressured into marriage.
I hope they maintain that her becoming a warrior is a sacrifice she makes for her physically incapable dad and not just a way to get out of her marital duties (regardless of rebelling against that being justified).

......

Trailers for The Terror - Infamy
Season 2, it's a anthology series like True Detective/American Horror Story, the theme is historical fiction with horror elements. First season was based off a novel about this incident - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin% ... expedition
New season looks to be a Grudge/Ring kind of haunting taking place in the Japanese internment camps of WW2.

Full disclosure:
Compared to the Lion King or Ariel I don't have that big of an attachment to Mulan. But this looks a lot better to me than The Live Action King; for pretty much one reason. Mulan does use some color!
Also, Asian representation in a huge American blockbuster is always a pro, in my book. Think this might sell gangbusters in China.
-----------------------
Also curious about the new Tarantino; it's been a while! I've read that the movie suffers even more from the lack of punchy editing his movies featured, before Sally Menke died.

Unsurprisingly, the unnecessary live-action Akira movie has been shelved because they "couldn't find" ethnically appropriate actors who could carry a film of that scale. Take that nonsense excuse as you will. Either way, with a new anime series covering the manga in production this remake becomes more and more unnecessary and should just stay dead.

Taika Waititi instead will make Thor 4 which is what he should have been doing this whole in the first place anyways.

I'd rather they shelve Akira anyway regardless of excuse, because its a many shades of grey film, and the danger is they could make it very black and white which might annoy a lot of people who enjoy the complex characters in the oringal movie.

That's a weird reading of the nondescript reasons given, but ok.

Deadline broke the story. Deadline is the insiders news source for the film industry and has connections to everyone in all aspects of the industry.
This is an actual quote from the Deadline story that broke the news:
The project had been on the rocks for weeks, with word in town that it is a difficult film to cast ethnically at its high budget, in this moment of political correctness.
It's a gross way to describe the situation but it also lays bare the major hurdle the film is having right now. Certain people involved want a Japanese cast. The others want - most likely - white movie stars.
If Deadline puts that into that article, even as gross as they say it, and are making stuff up they're liable to be sued.
They're not making stuff up.
It's a sometimes sick industry with a lot of societal issues that need to be worked out.
There will likely be reports of "creative differences" & "script issues" in the near future to make it appear otherwise but the issue is they don't think a $200 million movie with a primarily Japanese cast will make money.
Maybe I also actually know what I'm talking about from experience, have seen it happen to friends and people I know and I don't make "weird readings of nondescript reasons" or make stuff up.
But ok.

Not only is that reasoning gross, it also blinds itself to the facts about the industry. Those Fast & Furious movies made how much money again? And Crazy Rich Asians made a killing in the box office as well. White Wonder Bread casting for its own sake doesn’t attract audiences, it bores them.

That being said, I’m still kinda glad the movie isn’t getting made. I just hate the racist thinking behind it.
