I actually don’t remember the blender. I was probably so traumatized that I suppressed the memory.

I blame Brave Little Toaster for my lingering dislike of junkyard electromagnets.

actually, I do remember that Toaster's dream (nightmare with that weird clown) freaking me out a tad when I was really young

and I didn't get too scared when Elmo took apart the blender, but I found it funny when the appliances "came to life" and escaped though

speaking of funny, Phil Hartman and Jon Lovitz in BLT, good grief, such different but great humor from both

NAveryW wrote:HAL, if you really are ITCHING to talk about these earlier films, don't let me from stopping you.
ALRIGHT!

no one's mentioned The Fox and the Hound, first Disney film without the contractually obligated happy ending

Snow White
and Sleeping Beauty, though they are considered children's classics and rightly so, had pretty violent and scary thematic elements too

oh, and The Wizard of Oz, anyone?

what about that environmentalist propaganda Fern Gully?

I have to mention here that the scores for The Brave Little Toaster and The Land Before Time are fantastic. BLT is one of the few animated features whose songs are all quite catchy, and LBT (lol anagram) benefits greatly from James Horner's groodness.
well, James Horner IS "groodness"

in particular, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids...

I just looked up some clips of Brave Little Toaster on Youtube. In retrospect the clown nightmare is pretty awesome. The voice actor for the air conditioner sounds familiar. Anyone have any ideas? He reminds me of a drug-addicted, homeless Vietnam veteran. The comments on Youtube suggest that many children were traumatized by the Brave Little Toaster. Now THAT’S a fun statistic!

remember how I mentioned Phil Hartman?

he was kind of going for a Jack Nicholson-type voice which he used in impersonations and other voice work

Haha lol the animals of farthing wood was one of my favourite tv series as a kid but now i think about it its pretty damned violent.
The fox and the hound was another favourite, due to it not being another happy ending, plus i liked the fight scene at the end.

One of the most disturbing for me was THE BLACK COULDRON, i mean seriously this one has fucking undead rotting warriors in it and definately the most terrifying art of any disney film ive seen.

I heard the new Narnia film has a lot of violence in it. No blood though.

Finding Nemo and The Incredibles have a pretty high body count, all things considered...in the first, it's all of Marlin's children save one, and in the second, it's a lot of townspeople and several superheroes (apparently murdered by Syndrome).

I didn't really consider Marlin's children to be "deaths", as they weren't quite born yet and it didn't really look like they had formed that much.

well how could I forget The Incredibles?

that movie, while it maybe my favorite Pixar film EVAR, was a few blood drops and a four-letter word away from a PG-13 rating

I also loved Requiem for a Dream but that's another thread

Heh, I was thinking about that when I posted. Actually, I like to think that the eggs weren't destroyed, but were treated and hatched by a Satanic fish coven and were raised as Antichrists.

I've been watching Farthing Wood on Veoh, and I just finished the seventh episode. You know what this series reminds me of the most? Battlestar Galactica. Both stories involve protagonists going on a journey, searching for a supposed safe haven/utopia after their homes were destroyed by an enemy... I mean, it really isn't all that much like it, but it reminded me somewhat of BSG.

I can see why people were saying AoFW scarred them. If I had seen those baby field mice impaled on those thorns with blood all over the place, I would have been traumatized too. Especially because I've had many pet mice and find them to be adorable. And they were freaking newborn babies. Less than a day old. Contrast this to Nickelodeon's current standards and practices that will not allow any children to be killed under any circumstances.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I remember being scared by certain things in that Mark Twain movie. After rewatching the VHS recently, however, I was really intrigued by the Mysterious Stranger part. I ended up reading it and it's become one of my favorite books. It kind of annoys me that the people making the claymation didn't realize that the version of the story they were using was Albert Bigelow Paine's unauthorized rewrite/combination of "The Chronicle of Young Satan" and "No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger".

Farthing wood was one of my favourite tv shows as a kid but rewatching it now the symbolism is astounding for a program that was shown to 5 year olds, for example toad being buried alive and a stone sticking out of the pile of earth like a grave stone and the the bible story similaritys, for example moses elading the jews to the promised land.

I get chills watching this again.

I remember while I was watching the Incredibles, toward the end all those minions are chasing the heroes down in those flying saucer things, and they were chucked into eachother and exploding, and I was like, "Wow, those guys are dead... I did not expect that from a Disney/Pixar movie..."

Bambi's mom got shot. Not a high body count, but it was a definite tear-jerker.

thought I should BUMP this rather than start a new thread since this shift in topic isn't far enough IMO to warrant one

we've discussed body counts in kids' movies, how about innuendo/urban legends in kids' movies?

you know, The Rescuers with the two frames (out of over 10,000) which feature a topless lady?

The Little Mermaid, the "unfortunate" looking spire in the original movie poster and the priest's alleged boner?

Aladdin, with the very-un-PC lyrics in a song, the "take your clothes off" line, the allegations that it was a ripoff of The Thief and the Cobbler, or The Thief and the Cobbler ripped off Aladdin?

The Lion King, with "SEX(/SFX)" allegedly spelled out in the clouds during a scene, or the "Kimba/Simba" controversy with the allegation that The Lion King was a total ripoff of the old Japanese anime Kimba the White Lion? hmm?

there was one that I heard from a former classmate years ago that in Alice in Wonderland, during the Mad Hatter's tea table scene, the teapots and kettles that are whistling, he said that if you turn up the volume, you can make out that they are saying the f-bomb with each "whistle"; I'm not sure about this since I've not heard about this anywhere else and I haven't personally tested this myself so I wonder if anyone here has heard of this or can attest to it

and... go!!

Animals of Farthing Wood was fantastic - that's the show that brought it home to me that in nature, stuff dies...all the time! Really excellent show.

I used to get my Mum to rent this for me all the time when I was 4 or 5 - I thought it was amazing! It was a bit advanced for me to understand it, but I loved it anyway. The rest of my family thought it was terrifying though!

...Except my sister. She used to always rent Watership Down at around the same time - now there's a dark, death-filled cartoon! (Brilliant! )
