Saddest Songs in Movies

I'm trying to compile a list of the most melancholy songs I can think of in cinema. Here are the first few I can think of, in no particular order:

"Komm Susser Tod" (I can't remember what it's from at the moment)
"Gollum's Song" (The Two Towers)
"Mad World" (Gary Jules version for Donnie Darko)
"Learn to Be Lonely" (Most recent version of Phantom of the Opera. Actually, I found the unused, earlier version of the song, titled No One Would Listen, to be sadder)

Anything worth adding? Note that I didn't add that song from Titanic because, while I'm sure it's an obvious choice, I... haven't seen Titanic yet.

It was; there's no freaking way I'd put crap like KST on that prestigious list!

I thought it was very sad. I start tearing up everytime that part starts. Perfect timing. When Shinji starts strangling Asuka and those first few notes start to play... Gets me everytime.

I see you edited your post. No, I didn't put that in there as a joke; A_E was referring to me not remembering what it was from as being the joke, and I tried to be ironic by suggesting he meant including it in the list.

I think we're all a little confused here, lol. NAveryW knows it's from EoE, he was just implying that as a joke. And yea I thought he was refering to it not being sadd, my bad =/.

But about sadd songs.... I'd say anything from "A Beautiful Mind". VERY sad movie.

Does it have to be in movies? Because I've got some in games etc.

My favourites:
Pretty much the entire Black Hawk Down OST.
Hummel Gets The Rockets - The Rock (1996)

The name of the song is called Home Sweet Home. The song isn't sad at all, but because of the movie, I have a hard time listening to it. Strangely, it's not on any of the OSTs (which isn't worth it, the first OST is just the audio from the movie, with the talking and sound effects included).

Thanks for the info, I've wondered what it was for a while. I had a sneaking suspicion that it probably wasn't even sad, but damn it sure does seem like in the context of the film. That's the moment in the film I break down bawling like a little girl.

Komm Susser Tod. For sure. I haven't watched Grave of the Fireflies, but knowing what it's about, I'll take your word on it.

"Debriefing" from MGS3 is a good one. (C'mon, any game made by Kojima has a movie feel to it.)

the classic MGS2 theme is always good. not sure if it's really 'sad,' but it's definitely very emotional.

also, the second ending for Welcome to the NHK, "Modokashii Sekai no Ue de" by Yui Makino, is pretty damn moving. Especially during episode 24's ending credits; the buildup and the closure here is sad, yet entirely perfect. Actually, now that I think about it, NHK had a lot of moving, fitting music. That "knock, knock, knock" acoustic piece is great, too.

"Nimrod" from Edgar Elgar, played during the executions of the Catholic conspirators in the movie Elizabeth.

Zadok the Priest (Coronation Anthem 1) by Handel, played during the restraining scene in The Madness of King George. It does what a lot of the music in EoE does - puts a happy tune over a tragic scene to make it even more heartbreaking.

Also for your consideration: the whole Edward Scissorhands soundtrack... :crybaby:
