I saw The Nice Guys. It was a fun time, but far from Shane Black's best film, written or directed.

James Franco is actually a pretty decent actor, and an overall successful guy. It's because of this, however that he mostly appears in stoner comedies.
While I believe he can carry most roles given to him, the problem here will be how it affects the marketing. Most people don't associate Franco with action hero badass, so it might take some effort to convince the audience that this is distinct from his usual comedy work.
We shall see.

This isn't a complete deal breaker. Predator has always been set in the modern day.
Having said that we do have reason to be a little cautious here. Given Fox has a history of making filmmakers alter their vision so they can shoot their films for cheap in Canada without having to build sets from scratch (Cough) X-Men(Cough) Fant4stic (Cough) AVPR.

Let's not pretend the filmmakers behind AVPR had any vision okay? That's disrespectful to filmmakers everywhere.
(Also X-Men is a film form 16 years ago, the Fox management has entirely changed so that film is not comparable to anything they're making today AND the Fantastic Four remake had all the money in the world thrown at it - public budget: $120 million, more realistic budget : north of $160 million - but fell apart because the filmmakers were unfocused & not up to the task)
Either way it's too easy right now with zero context to say "Predator in the suburbs? Awful!" especially when the team behind the movie is the most promising one since the 1987 original.
Politics aside, genre nerds are the quickest people to jump on the hate bandwagon. "What, you cast Heath Ledger to play the Joker? This movie is gonna fucking suck!" "What, you're not bringing Mel Gibson back for Mad Max 4? That movie is gonna fucking suck!" "What, X-Men:First Class is not directed by Bryan Singer? That movie is gonna fucking suck!" etc etc etc.

The already stellar cast of Shane Black's The Predator just got even more impressive with the addition of 10-year-old Jacob Tremblay, who wowed us all with his performance in Room alongside Brie Larson. According to THR, Tremblay will be playing the son of the lead character (Logan's Boyd Holbrook), who is "autistic and bullied in school but becomes a key player in the fight due to his preternatural ability to learn languages."
The trade also provides a few more plot hints, as it mentions that Holbrook's ex-marine is the one that discovers the existence of the "fierce aliens", and nobody believes him at first.
This is all just bizarre man.
