Red, White and Blue - 8/10
Image
A rather nasty little revenge thriller that I'm glad made it's way onto my radar. A sexually promiscuous young woman named Erica befriends a disturbed Iraqi war vet. Then one night she goes missing, kidnapped by a young wanna-be rockstar, with whom she had a one-night stand that left his life in shambles, and his three friends/bandmates (don't wanna go into too much detail, because there's a few twists). Nate (the veteran) makes it his new mission to hunt down and exact his twisted brand of justice on her captors. It sounds like a pretty average cookie-cutter vengeance story but it ended up pleasantly surprising me (and the final scene left me with some serious feels). Worth a watch if you liked Blue Ruin, The Rover or pretty much any Korean revenge film.

Jackie Chan's Project A. I'm trying to dive deeper (earlier) into Chan's films, and haven't seen a lot of the earlier 80s ones. This wasn't as amazing as I had been led to believe by various online reviews. Sure, the choreography was good, but they didn't do anything particularly memorable in the fight scenes. Yeah, the clock tower stunt was impressive, but it wasn't worth the price of admission. Finally, it wasn't as funny as some of his later movies. Overall, it was a decent watch, but certainly average compared to some of his better movies (e.g. Drunken Master II).

The first Kizumonogatari movie is a pretty impressive 58 minutes with some truly stellar animation and dynamic character moments that is unlike anything that has come before in the series.... that leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth when it ends cause they've just cut the first act of the actual film and called it a movie. I didn't have to pay to the film - it's nice to have a few personal connections to film distribution - but I can only imagine how annoying that will be to people who do.

Whiplash

One of the most impressive movies I have ever seen. Being that I would love to be involved somehow in the world of music playing, this film kind of serves as a guide to what to prepare for. Anyway, JK Simmons is a beast playing the nasty music teacher tormenting Miles Teller. I also have to admit that the film's ending kind of confuses me since it leaves it up in the air about whether Fletcher was solely out for revenge against Neiman in the final performance or was merely testing him in order to bring out his potential. But that final drum solo is the stuff of legends! ^_^

The Witch is the best horror movie in years, but apparently it's been mismarketed so egregiously that people all over the web are reporting horrible audiences of loud, obnoxious moviegoers who were expecting something more in the vein of Paranormal Activity than slow-building, atmospheric horror. That was unfortunately my experience. It's to the point where I almost can't recommend going to see it in a theater - or if you do, try and find a showtime where there will be as few other people as possible.

Went out to see Deadpool for myself on the weekend, to see if it was worth the hype. Funny thing is, the movie house was half-empty, despite that this was in a mall cinemaplex.

Lots of tongue-in-cheek pop-culture references, including a particular song (that attained notoriety in my country because it was used as BGM for a sex video then was stolen by a crafty phone technician who then uploaded it into the interwebs), and of course, the attendant carnage wherever the new R-Rated Superstar roams.

The weak thing, however, was the villain and his minions; was expecting a truly tough mofo, plus lot more DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA and maybe a couple of attack helicopters and several MRAPs, but only a pile of souped-up rifles and leftovers of Counterstrike bots.

Very interesting indy film Don's Plum featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, shot before they were big names. Apparently they've been fighting for decades to keep the film unreleased for bizarre reasons, but one of the producers recently posted it on facebook. It's pretty good, sort of a Clerks meets Kids kind of vibe. Check it out: https://www.facebook.com/freedonsplum

All the movies I watched in the last 2 months, only 1 film in February as I have been busy Marathon-ing The West Wing.

__SPACE COWBOYS (2000)__first time viewing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PAZBAV43Zw
__DEFENSE OF THE REALM (1986)__first time viewing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqxYhLe-vcs
- Big fan of Gabriel Byrne, solid as expected here.
- Good mystery reporting spy thriller.
- Disliked the ending.
__VALKYRIE (2008)__first time viewing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ww9IWCGZeyw
__MAN OF STEEL (2013)__ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVu3gS7iJu4
- Some extensive thoughts I typed down while watching the film.
SPOILER: Show
- The films all around great score particularly shines during the opening 19 minute sequence on Krypton.
- Despite the logic issue of Jor-El a scientist being able to defeat Zod a life long soldier, their fight scene, actually all of Jor-El's fight scenes are solid.
- Love the design of Krypton from the environment itself to their technology, the morphing Nanites that take the place of their computer screens or holograms in particular are ingenious and fascinating to look at. The CGI on said Nanites only failed to be believable once when they formed Lara's face. The environment really gets across that this is the mined out husk of a world on its last legs.
- You get the faint impression that Lara is only going along with this plan out of sheer loving faith in Jor and not that she actually thinks is a great plan on its own merits. That moment when the beaten Zod pleads to her specifically to cease the launch, and she hesitates and looks up at Jor and he almost looks concerned about what she will do.
- I like how different Zod's speech at the end of his trial is to Stamps, Stamps came off delusional self aggrandizing while Zod's came off as a desperate last spiteful burst of anger against the disgusting politicians before him, when they request his last words, in his face you can see his despairing anger boiling over at having failed his fellow soldiers and mission.
- Like the subtle ticks of honor and pure loyalty they gave Faora, when Zod runs forward to yell in the courts face, she instinctively rushes forward to stand along side him when she notices the guards coming to restrain him.
- Conflicted on whether or not I dislike that they did not show the Kents finding Kal in his pod.
- The teacher letting the entire class group around the closet kid Clark is hiding in obviously out of need for seclusion. Really lady?
- When people complain about the "mabye" line and scene, I think they throw it way out of context, When he actually says it he is clearly struggling with what to say rocking back and forth against the truck and just spits it out, and another KEY thing is the immediate follow up line which clarifies its not coming from sociopathic or selfish point of view,
"There is more at stake here then just our lives Clark or the lives around us"
"When the world..... when the world find out what you can do its gonna change everything, our... beliefs, our notions of... what it means for be human, everything"
He speaks it like a man who experienced that life changing revelation himself when they found Clark.
- The scene with Pa and Clark in the basement is well done in strongly getting across that Pa loves Clark but also is extremely uncertain around him. Wish the film had more scenes of Clark as a kid with his parents in less tense life moments.
- The bar scene establishes Clarks distaste for punching down it also establishes how restrained and slow to anger he is, when he initially confronts the ass grabber drunk he merely puts his hand on the guys shoulder and says "leave her alone, man" almost in a almost purely friendly suggestion kinda way, and then immediately removes his hand. The trashing of the jackasses truck harms his walking away as the better man stance, but at the same time, I think he would not have done so if the jerk let him walk away with dignity, instead of throwing a can at him on the way out.
- There is this split second moment when he is taking his apron off and looks at the jerk with this kinda of genuinely sad "damn it man, I liked this job" look.
- Shot behind Lois taking photos of the massive cliff beyond and above her is gorgeous.
- Jor-El's giving the back story of Krypton could be considered needless exposition for the audience, but at the same time, its a nice humble moment of discovery for Clark that I am entirely happy was put in the film.
- The tornado scene... Needed to be tightened up. People complain why did Pa not let Clark go for the dog, that is explained as Pa specifically tells Clark to get Martha to the overpass, hence he obviously values Clark protecting Martha more then the dog.
But then there is a whole good amount between when he gets her there and when Pa motions for him to stay, that Clark should have run to help him. The 2 moments should have coincided, with Clark right when he gets Martha and the kid he was carrying to the Overpass is when he turns and Pa is getting to his feet and Motions for him not to proceed, Clark should have only hesitated for a moment and Pa was gone, as it is, the scene lingers far too long with Clark doing nothing. For those reasons It absolutely is the most flawed scene in the film.
- Moment between Clark and Martha when he returns knowing his origins is very interesting, you really get the impression they know each other very well, Clark recognizing her ticks and personality enough to realize when she is obviously having a mixed response to the news.
- People endlessly harp on the religious imagery, its literally TWO SCENES, the church scene which is a nice humble moment of Clark asking for a human perspective and bit of advice on what he should do and the cross pose in space which was a beautiful shot.
- I appreciate the change in design they intelligently gave to the Kryptonian armor between the modern stuff we saw in the opening and the many thousands of years old colonial armor, The tech conceptually is the same, the form merely adapted and flowed into something more organic looking in time.
- People complain the film is endless mindless action... Its literally 1 Hundred and 29 Minutes into the film before we get the first fight scene with Clark himself (That is not a complaint, I love the build up)
- Forgot how tense and well done the Small-ville fight is viewing within the film.
- Music when the C17 takes off and when Clark crashes the scout ship in particular are fantastic.

__ANT MAN (2015)__ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWdKf3MneyI
- Whole cast is solid.
- They did do too much of a good job of showing why Hope was far more qualified to to the job then Scott.
- Strongly look forward to Lilly as Wasp in their next film.
- The Hornet outfit design is absolutely badass!
- Corey Stoll is good here, not great, I think he would make a great Lex Luthor if he dialed back his emotions a bit, he was phenomenal in House of Cards.
__FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER (1991)__ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aWLk36djRE
- Regrettably the weakest film on this list today IMO.
- Some good moments and character stuff but overall just kinda meandering.
- Not nearly as energetic and fun as say Top Gun.
__ALI (2001)__first time viewing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl2FSulKQq4
- Liked it a lot overall despite hearing mixed things prior to watching it.
- Mario Van Peebles as Malcolm X was very good. Makes me interested in seeing the Denzel Washington Malcolm X movie soon.
__STATE OF PLAY (2009)__ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1Sp1QvyQQI
- Probably my 3rd time viewing the film and honestly I think this is now among my favorite films, not top favorites but in there.
- Absolutely love the feel and tone of the film.
__JUSTICE LEAGUE - GODS & MONSTERS (2015)__first time viewing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxL1Iw73azg

Yesterday I watched Red Dawn (1984) again, but this was my first time seeing it on blu-ray. Mirroring my other experiences with re-buying my favorite films on blu-ray, it was almost like seeing it for the first time again. It didn't receive nearly as much remastering as something like the Star Wars trilogy, and many scenes are still plagued by the film's severe graininess, but all of the close-up scenes were nicely cleaned up and really stand out. For instance, it is now possible to read what's written on Colonel Bella's shoulder patch when he's talking to Bratchenko in front of the "Soviet-American Friendship Center." Visually the film is now leaps and bounds better than the garbage-quality DVD release I've been putting up with for years, which is so low-res that my PS3 and PS4 both shrink it to roughly a quarter of the screen when I try to play it using them. The blu-ray was definitely a worthwhile purchase, one of my favorite films of all time just got a lot better.

It's beautifully shot, and pretty quirky overall... But I found it so boring and incoherent, I've stopped halfway through. This movie cannot be compared to how fun Lebowski is.

I watched Creed this weekend. It was pretty good, but kind of pissed me off at the same time, because it's just a remake of the original Rocky.

The Boy and the Beast. I liked it better than Wolf Children, though maybe I need to see Wolf Children again.

I've yet to see a proposed explanation for why Japanese pop culture was suddenly enthralled with Moby Dick in 2015.

While Wolf Children didn't grab me the way Summer Wars or the Girl did, (maybe because the subject matter just doesn't interest me all that much...) I ended up quite liking it. The premise of The Boy hits me all the right ways. I'm just a sucker for urban settings. I'm just a little bit worried, because ANN didn't give it an all too glowing review, which they mainly attributed to the missing of the script writer from the other movies. Also, the lack of Sadamoto's design shows. But let's see.

Sadamoto didn't work on Boy? The look is so consistent with Hosoda's previous films that I wouldn't have guessed it. Of course, human characters are in the minority for this one anyway.

My experience for my one viewing of Wolf Children (a crowded convention room playing the underwhelming English dub) was decidedly less than ideal, so maybe it bears rewatching. I recall my biggest annoyance was with Hosoda's tendency toward cloying sentimentality and rigid Screenwriting 101 story beats. I don't think that's going away anytime soon, but for whatever reasons those things grated on me somewhat less in this film than that one.

Summer Wars is still my favorite Hosoda film (though I haven't seen Girl Who Leapt Through Time or Digimon) on account of simply being unpretentious, visually energetic blockbuster fun. Both of his subsequent works have been more self-serious, slow and ponderous by comparison.

If you liked Summer Wars, and have a nostalgic place for Digimon in your ♥, I highly recommend watching his take on it. Both movies are basically one of a kind. I also quite enjoyed his take on One Piece, though actual fans of that franchise tend to disagree with me on that one. Also, you really should watch The Girl. I like it a lot. It's as funny as Summer Wars could be, but overall more low-key than SW.
