There's a few Disney movies I like better, but The Little Mermaid does have a special place in my heart, and it demands occasional rewatching. (Rene Auberjonois as a singing, psychotic French chef never gets old...)

Has anybody mentioned Aliens?

Oh, yes. That was one of the first things to be mentioned.

Halloween is closing in fast, so I thought I'd give a shout-out to Night of the Demons for being re-watchable enough that I've viewed it with friends every October 31st since 2006.

Aliens is one of my favourites ever. A virtually perfect movie, pretty much impossible to improve on under any aspect. Great characters, solid plot with no freaking plotholes a 5 year old could spot, a desperate struggle, awesome climax and the immortal, genius exchange "Vasquez have you ever been mistaken for a man?" "No. Have you?". What more could you want?

85-86 produced a good trio of sci-fi movies for children/family: Explorers, D.A.R.Y.L. and Flight of the Navigator.

The Dark Crystal is slowly starting to grow on me. There's a lot of things done right about that movie that I can forgive that there really isn't an interesting story in it.

Meh, David Lynch never did much for me. That said, it is surprising no one has mentioned him yet.

Lynch films aren't 80's IMO, they transcend time and space.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Platoon and Full Metal Jacket were both awesome as hell.

From the fantasy/SF side, The Empire Strikes Back. Cue the Imperial March! Raiders of the Lost Ark was awesome too.

I really wanted to like The Dark Crystal, but I felt embarrassed to be watching it, from beginning to end.
