It has my favorite Bond theme.

The usage of the theme was damn brilliant as well.

It's probably my third favorite after From Russia with Love and The Spy Who Loved Me.

Have you seen Lee Kang-Sheng's Help Me, Eros, Oz? I can't remember... anyway, I saw it last night, and it was quite good, though not up to the level of Tsai's best films. I'm working on a review now and I didn't know if you want me to send you the movie.

Opinion among the film is very divided but I thought it was a nice, offbeat, black comedy. John Malkovich is probably the best part of the film.
That's an odd duck. I mean, it's one of those I can't really find any legitimate flaws with, but it just doesn't have the same punch impact is the best of the Coen Bros, although it does get better the more I think about it.

I have not, but I'll watch it at some point. It's not particularly high on my to-watch list.

Yesterday I got the rest of the Japanese DVDs I ordered and now I have a gigantic pile of films to watch. Expect more LOLJAPAN from me during the next 2 weeks.

Really? I thought it was a great transition from No Country For Old Men.

SPOILER: Show
That and Brad Pitt dying made me lolhard.

Watched Gamer a few days ago. I want that hour and half back (except for the bits with Micheal C. Hall though I want to keep those).

Toshiaki Toyoda's Blue Spring: Whoa. I certainly didn't get what I expected, but it was great nevertheless. Judging by the trailer it seemed like a late addition to films taking the Battle Royale way, but I was proven completely wrong. Blue Spring is a lyrical, brutal tragedy which explores so much in only 83 minutes. The sheer amount of metaphors, subplots and themes stuffed into that running time is amazing and it never feels forced or bloated. My first impression is that it is not a masterpiece (sometimes relies on dialogues/monologues in a bit jarring way), but it's a damn great film.

Superman/Shazam: Return of Black Adam. Nice movie about the origins of Captain Marvel and three DC showcases with Specter, Green Arrow, and Jonah Hex.

I liked it a lot, but I think it suffered a bit for being directly after No Country For Old Men, their bleakest film by a good measure. I think it will be one of those films that's reevaluated a few years down the road and people will realize it's much better than they remember it being.

Thank You for Smoking
Casablanca

Starting to lose any sort of want for rating films. I enjoyed them both.

I do that too know. It's either "I liked it" or "I didn't like it" it seems.

Speaking of movies I liked, I watched My Favorite Year with Peter O'Toole. It was pretty solid, they got down all the "behind the scenes" specifics with early TV pretty spot on, and the wildness of O'Toole's character made me lol.

On to watch Jin-Roh: Wolf Brigade.

Watched Splice today. I'm a bit of a Natali fan, so I enjoyed it quite a bit, although I enjoyed Cube and Cypher more.

I wrote a review for Splice. I thought it was quite enjoyable, though I was never able to get past some of the hammy acting.

I greatly enjoyed Splice. It filled the empty void in cinema that David Cronenberg left since he's no longer doing body horror pictures.

The effects were astounding and I find it a shame the film wasn't at least considered for Best Special Effects at the useless Academy Awards this year.

I was so glad the movie went to the places I hoped it would go ("No, you can't do that. We can't do that. Oh fuck it") but I was very disappointed in the final 10 minutes when it turned into a tired monster movie. Especially since the most sympathetic character in the film up to that point had been Dren, it really was her story.

Shion Sono's Suicide Club: On rewatch I pretty much understand what Sono set out to do with the film and why he drastically failed. He manages to take a look at suicide from surprisingly many points of view, but he could only do it by completely fragmenting the story into pieces and thus it seems chaotic and incoherent at first. The real problem is that the film loses its emotional centre thanks to that, but the many subplots do make a lot of sense in the end. The narrative doesn't spend much time on the detective work, but the mystery is still given a presence too big so it distracts pretty much everyone from the themes (why to choose life over death) - and it doesn't help that Sono is so obsessed with blood, suicide and pessimism that he leaves the only strand of his actual stance into the ending credits sequence (and even there it's only in the lyrics of a music video by a girl group that signifies pop culture's effect on EVERYTHING). It's one heck of a mess, but when all of it comes together it's sort of decent. Sono's form is far from the glory of Love Exposure, but it works sufficiently here.

I think the incoherentness and chaoticness made the film a lot more interesting. I guess that might just be me though. I seem to like films more when I don't know what the hell is going on.

Also, doesn't the book Suicide Circle: The Complete Edition tie up some loose ends? Don't think it has been translated to English though.

was it directed by Sono?

I eagerly await the day Oz decides to go through Sono's full filmography and encounter his gay porn outings

Yeah, I agree. The rest of the film was somewhat unpredictable with its plot and story arcs. But as soon as the climax came around, the predictability entered to the film.
