Good news or bad news depending on which side of the fence you're on. Personally, I think it's kind of a lean towards GOOD.

I suppose that as long as they don't try to dumb it down for the American audience it can turn out pretty decent.

Is it wrong that I want Zac Efron to be Light?

I guess I have to watch one of Death Note's incarnations now, so I can have an elitist opinion on the remake.

I've kept meaning to, but I haven't seen ANYTHING Death Note. No TV series or Asian cult films. It'd be like when I saw The Last Airbender without ever seeing the animated TV show. I just hope I won't be as bored with it as I was then.

I wouldn't consider the Asian films cult hits by any standard. Hell, they came out before the TV series.

"Dear God, please have Christopher Nolan give this his treatment instead..."

then again, with that whole "climate of civility" business in question by the chattering class, it may have to go an indie route because of the controversy that would inevitably descend over Warner Bros. if they try and make a major release out of it

I also hope that Shia LeBeouf stays away from this

I've never heard of the people that have been given the job of writing this script, and a brief internet search across google, wiki and allmovie yielded no results. I'm all for a U.S. adaptation of Death Note, sadly, this one looks like it'll be a wild card until (or if) it comes out.

I think if it went the indie route, it might have a bigger chance to be good. Hollywood would obviously want to dumb it down.

Now, if only they could get Guillermo del Toro involved...

I used to be a big fan of DN until I got bored with the series during the second half of the series. I seen the movies from Shusuke Kaneko (Best know for the Heisei Gamera movies) and I enjoy them.

I hope this will be decent and won't be bad like the most American anime live action films.

Once this movie comes out I'm already seeing the image macros with the Loughner guy putting the congresswoman name on the Death Note...

...too early??

Shane Black as director? A bit of an odd choice, but if it calls his attention, let him have it. He has earned it.

I think this has a huge chance of being good. I've not read the manga but I greatly enjoyed the anime, but there is still A LOT of room of improvement for it.

Death Note is actually anime with lots of potential for live action so it COULD work out...

I thought the Japanese live action movies of Death Note were pretty decent, bad acting and casting aside.

I haven't seen them. Excluding crazy apperance of shinigami there shouldn't be anything too hard in SFX department and in hands of great director and screenwriter it really might result in damn good thriller.

One move that would help is if they's change Light from high school age to college age. I can easily bite the whole "Light the high school supergenius" due to general lolanime but it'd be far more harder in live action and I think general audiences would just go "lol"

The ending was a lot better than the anime atleast.
