I saw the trailer a couple times in theaters, from which I couldn't for the life of me discern what it was actually about, only that it looked artsy-fartsy and pretentious as hell (as anything with Sean Penn in it is wont to do). Still, both its fans and detractors are describing it with keywords that I can't ignore: put the words "ambitious", "visionary", "artistic", "sci-fi" and "insane" within two sentences of each other and you might as well be begging me to check out whatever it is you're referring to. I've never seen a Terrance Malick film before, either (quite honestly I'd never heard of him before all the buzz surrounding this film) so this is probably as good a place to start as any. And as a fan of Japanese sci-fi, it would be awfully hypocritical of me to dismiss a film entirely on the grounds of being pretentious and unfocused.

Even if Tree of Life had been Malick masturbating for 4 hours everyone would have flocked to see it because it is a freakin' Terrence Malick film. The release of a Malick film is a cinematic milestone, a huge cultural event. No matter what you think of his films you ought to agree with this if you have any idea of his reputation in the film world.

Well I would think so, given how rarely he releases them.

I would enjoy that more than any of his other films.

For me, it would depend. Would it be him masturbating continuously for four hours? Him masturbating on and off for four hours? Or just several clips of him masturbating edited together, adding up to a total of four hours? Depending on the circumstances, you can get a radically different viewing experience.
"Now, from Nature we obtain abundant information about ourselves, and precious little about others. About the woman you clasp in your arms, can you say with certainty that she does not feign pleasure? About the woman you mistreat, are you quite sure that from abuse she does not derive some obscure and lascivious satisfaction? Let us confine ourselves to simple evidence: through thoughtfulness, gentleness, concern for the feelings of others we saddle our own pleasure with restrictions, and make this sacrifice to obtain a doubtful result." -The Divine Marquis

I think continual masturbation would be required for maximum viewing pleasure.

I can't wait for this film. I have absolutely no idea of what to expect, regardless of the trailer, clips I've seen, reviews. All I know is that I want to be there to experience it on the big screen.

I love Terrence Malick. Badlands is my favorite of his, I haven't seen "The New World" but I wasn't big on "The Thin Red Line" as many people are, I would still say it's kind of a great film, though.

Saw Tree of Life opening day. All I can & want to say on the film at the moment is... WOW. Loved it from beginning to end. It's certainly a work that will only become richer on a second viewing.

It's too early to see, especially after only one viewing, but there's a very probable chance after giving it a few more looks it could become my favorite Malick film ever. Which of course puts it in the running for one of my favorite films of all time.

Hyperbole? Possible. But goddamn did I love The Tree of Life!

I just saw it, and my impressions are such a jumble at the moment that all I can say is that I fucking loved it.

I'm planning on seeing this myself. I don't think I'll like it as much as everyone though, because I'm not a fan of art films or Malick films. However, it's cool to know Douglas Trumbull is contributing to the special FX. The visuals in 2001 and Blade Runner are among my all time favorites.

so I saw this based on Douglas Trumbull's name alone, and here are my thoughts

What I DID Like About The Tree of Life:

1. HOLY SHIT! IT'S TOTALLY 2001 TEN YEARS LATER!!!! WHERE'S HAL OR SAL?! (LOL)

that's kind of mean-spirited for me to say, but I mean that as a compliment (with some qualifications, more on that in a sec), it was extremely refreshing though to see a movie like this that avoided CGI like the plague

2. w00t!!!! TEXAS represent!! nice to see a movie that includes actual places I know so well IRL as opposed to California or New York (or Canada standing in for either state, ha ha), this may be the first movie to involve downtown Dallas since Robocop IIRC, and I even had an old friend who was an extra in it

3. the kind of story this film told hit me so close to home at times in terms of the theme of growing up and living on with a great loss in life, it was really wonderful in how personal it came across, it was practically spiritual

4. if I could sum up this movie in a word, it would be "refreshing", it was nice to see a movie that took major risks with surrealism and the abstract as a major part of the film, it reminded me of Evangelion even (I would even argue a movie like this could make a great case for live action Eva), it was done very well...for the most part, speaking of which...

What I DID NOT Like About The Tree of Life:

1. HOLY SHIT!! IT'S TOTALLY 2001 TEN YEARS LATER BUT THERE'S NO HAL OR SAL!!!!! NO!!!!!!!

I am being mean and sarcastic here again, but I have the same complaints that I have for this film that I also had for 2001, the pacing and narrative got shaky at times, it never lost me but it got awfully close in some parts

2. in relation to the preceding, I think the editor(s) should either work harder next time or Terrence Malik should learn to write better next time, I am not sure which

perhaps I should pay more attention next time and the above flaws might not have bothered me, but still, this film was highly entertaining, I wish that people made more films like this and that Douglas Trumbull's kind of special effects work was in more demand

Visually it's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, but it was a bit too long for its own good. This is coming from someone who has many much longer films among his all time favorites. Overall, I still liked it a lot, though.
