Oh right, you said something about Oshii making a grave error about Descartes. It's been a while since I saw the film so I'm not sure what you mean

Xard thinks that Forrest Gump's philosophy is just as SUPERDEEP as Eva's, and no one can prove him wrong. The box of chocolate:life analogy was profound. In Eva you had to pay attention to the whole thing. A one-liner like a fortune cookie is way better in my opinion. Eva can go suck it.

This sounds like something twin drive would say. I think Xard is really Twin drives tsundere little sister!

But as for comparing Forest Gump with Eva I'm not really sure if it works, their much too different from each other. Though Forest Gump is a fiarly smartly done movie.

Guys, Forrest Gump was just first Hollywood blockbuster feel-good life message film that came to my mind. Don't overanalyze the choice

but again, it's true. Films are no place for anything intellectually worthwhile. Only some novels pass the test, and even then just barely

The problem is that many times, filmmakers simply don't understand the material well enough to dramatize it, so they end up with a result that is a poorly thought out mess of pretentious nonsense. And in the few cases where the result isn't poorly thought out nonsense, it's generally just a case of stating the obvious in a very rudimentary and heavy-handed way (NGE). In other cases (as in GitS 2, though I'd like to hear Allemann's comments on this since it sounds like Oshii screwed up his philosophy here, too) they simply do a piss-poor job of dramatizing the material they do know because they lose sight of what film-making is all about.

It's pretty rare to see philosophy explored adequately on film. I can't think of any films that have done such a thing off the top of my head. I mean, philosophers wrote their thoughts down for a reason. It's easier just to read their works or read about their works than to watch some story weighed down by the pretenses of trying to characterize them

Well that was perhaps a bit too harshly put, but art shouldn't pretend being worthy philosopher. It never ends well and truly deep works of art work on larger level than that of intelligence. It has nothing to do with rationality or smarts

Eva is pretty simple in the end too.

leave Xard ALONE!! BOO HOO HOO!! [/sarcasm]

OK, srsly, it is possible The Tree of Life could turn out to be Terrence Malick's Avatar, but it is a little early to go there (besides, is there not zero 3D or CGI? come on, bad comparison)

"Art shouldn't pretend to be worthy philosopher" is bound to raise a storm. There's no shortage of opinions about art and philosophy.

That being said, back to your regularly scheduled discussion, please.

The Palme D'Or was awarded to The Tree of Life.
"I'd really like to have as much money as you have, Oz" - robersora

But obviously it's not any sort of internal conflict that makes the analogy work. It's the pigtails." - Merridian
"Oh, Oz, I fear I'm losing my filmfag to the depths of Japanese pop. If only there were more films with Japanese girls in glow-in-the-dark costumes you'd be the David Bordwell of that genre." - Jimbo
"Oz, I think we need to stage an intervention and force you to watch some movies that aren't made in Japan." - Trajan

Tree of Life opens wide nationally on July 8.

BUT here's the list of theaters it will be released before then. You might find some luck there.
