Really? Some examples might be nice. I never noticed any similarities between the two shows at all when watching them, at least from a visual perspective. The characters never seem to be in the same situations and I can't recall any scenes that mimic scenes from NGE.

If you see similarities to Eva in Lain, how will you ever watch RahXephon?!

I'm seriously curious here because while i prefer lain i love both and i never noticed anything like that.

It may be that Lain and Eva in some cases reference the same things; after all, both shows are dense with cultural references. However, I can't think of any shots in the first two episodes of Lain that resemble *any* shots in Evangelion, unless you (for instance) cannot distinguish between old computers or believe that the use of colored lights in nightclubs originated with the wedding Misato goes to. And, that's really stretching things.

The PSone game is a jumbled mess and has been confirmed multiple times to not be the main event that is still speculated on today since well...........its a totally different reality than the lain series so i generally don't take reference to it but i agree that scene is freaking disturbing and very well done.

This just my theory, but
SPOILER: Show
The bear suit could symbolize Lain's naivete and lack of computer knowledge at the start of the series. It's a very childlike outfit, and Lain is very childlike in the first episode- she has a Child's Navi, is seen by her classmates as a 'baby' as she is less interested in the Wired than they are, and has a great deal of children's items like stuffed toys, the bear suit, and a bear hat. As Lain ventures deeper into the Wired and develops a more mature/aggressive persona within it, the bear suit and related childish apparel all vanish- Lain's room is reconfigured and she spends all her time in the skimpy white dress or in more mature clothing and makeup (which contrasts with the very conservative clothing she wears to Cyberia in Episode 2).
Notably, at the end of the series, when Lain is talking to the apparition of her father in the Wired, she is back in the bear suit, possibly reinforcing its links to her memories of her past, lost naivete and desire to return to that state which reachs fruition in her return to the physical world in her childish clothing at the end of the last episode.

I should post more opinions and less links but I marathoned this one a long time ago and I remember this link about the plot:
www.denbeste.nu/Chizumatic/tmw/SerialEx ... Lain.shtml
Which looks spot on, I don't follow denbeste and I don't agree with his opinions regarding some animes, but maybe for its time SEL was a pretty decent anime talking about god and probably one of the best even now. Good highschool material. If anything, other than the take on it the guys behind the anime have, curiosity on the anime themes and a 5 seconds google search will reveal relativism is like the number one enemy to faith and that a part of the church, along with some recent popes, still feels like obscurantist on some degree. Lots of pdfs..
Btw, this anime kind of one up'd those guys promoting "social seppuku" on facebook some years ago.

He tries to read the whole thing in terms of some vaguely christian allegory through digital means, with Lain as both christ and devil, then takes a page from creationists and says anything that doesn't fit with his theory is a false memory created to mislead us.

Why exactly does everything have to have a religious allegory, i feel like whenever people cant think up a proper theory they revert to shit like this because its incredibly easy to link everything to religion and make it look semi-credible.
Basically this theory sucks. (yes i only just read this)

Watched this for the first time last week and thoroughly enjoyed it, though since I'm not the most analytical person on the planet I fear I don't have anything particularly groundbreaking to say about it(I'm also worthless at writing reviews since I mostly just say, "it was sweet" or "it wasn't my thing"). I really loved the animation though, and Lain is probably my favorite anime character since Shinji, which is probably why the series is the one I enjoyed most since watching NGE for the first time three years ago. Loved that shot of her leaving her house and walking down the steps that kept replaying, and the music and that OP. I feel like the series is going to be sticking in my mind for a while, so I'll probably be doing a rewatch sometime in the next few months. Anything anybody think I should keep my eye out for?
Also, I was pretty happy to see that a lot of my fellow evageeks like it a lot too. Makes me feel like I belong.
Bought Haibane Renmei with it too, and I'm a couple episodes in. It's pretty sweet.

I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

I didn't like Boogiepop at all. It's like turning the convolutedness to 11, which is bad, because the plot is actually really really simple. This series made me not just understand but feel the definition of pretentious. This is made worse since all the characters look basically the same. Also it is the ugliest animated show in existence. Which is kinda a miracle, considering how much style over substance this show is. It has a sweet OST, though.
Go for Texhnolyze, much more bang for you buck.
