You know, "a civilian in war" is a good fit for Shinji too -- he's just this random civilian who's been in effect drafted because of what his father has built exactly as Amuro. The similarities are such that there's a tongue in cheek "Gundam ripped off Evangelion" comparison floating around here somewhere.

I was going to say something similar, but I doubt Shinji's condition is the same as Amuro's (though I can't say for sure, having never heard of the latter). The important thing about Shinji is that the only thing keeping him fighting is himself. He doesn't have to be there; he only pilots because that's the only way he knows to make himself feel needed. Shinji's looking for respect and validation, and many of the battles he fights in could be fought just as well with Rei, a dummy plug, etc.

I found another poll that seems to be an offshoot of this one.

Those summary lists start off exactly as the 2000's lists at the start of this thread -- the older series are just being forgotten.

The thing is that traditionally Japanese fans have had far better & approvable sense of history than the western counterparts: this can be seen for example in the annual "top 300 anime songs" votings 2ch does every year. There're tracks from bizarre, old "never heard of" sources as far as westerners are considered and plenty of classic tunes from classic old anime. Fujiko Mine is still voted the hottest anime character in medium's history, classic shows like Evangelion etc. dominate "best anime ever" lists etc.
Yes, it is true that Japanese people don't like to look back much these days and they have endless obsession with "new" but I'm sure that prior to last couple of years results so strongly dominated by this decade's stuff wouldn't exist.
Meh. Just more reasons to be irritated with CG and this millenium's Gundam series.
