Do you/have you attended any con's, and why?

I've attended each and every Eirtakon, usually as a staff member. The first and for a long time, only con in Ireland, has been running for 5 years and has just passed 1000 attendee's. The best thing about Eirtakon, is the atmosphere. It's very open and very welcoming, and much more personal. It's not such a large con that you'll get lost in the crowd either, you'll easily get to know fellow attendee's, recognise cosplayers and get to know the staff. You're not a face in the crowd.

Next year, there'll also be Nom-Con, Ireland's second animé convention (nobody counts Tomo-Dachi because...). It's new, and should be interesting. The con-director is promising quite a bit. I'll probably end up staffing this one too, because they're clamouring for people with experience from Eirtakon, and I may be able to finagle free accomodation out of it.

My main bread and butter has been Otakon. I've attended every year since 2000, and have graduated from attendee, to panelist, to staffer. I've also regularly attended Katsucon from 2002-2008, and Nekocon from 2002-2005 or 2006. Also been to Anime Mid-Atlantic 2004, and two Anime Centrals. I also showed up to a T-Mode convention once, but it was like the shittiest con I had ever been two, so I turned around and went home. Been to a lot of cons. It burned me out, so I only really go to Otakon now.

I know people who've been to Otakon... and I would like to go. However flying to the States is expensive and a pain, and bringing cool stuff back through customs will be even more problematic. Especially when it comes to the taxman waiting for me when I get home.

I have been Otakon back in 2008, it was fun. I was going to go this year but I did not had the money to do so, and I had some family issues to deal with at the time.

Anime Expo 2004 and Fanime 2009 are the only 2 anime conventions I've been to. Both were a blast.

I went to one in NYC about a year or two ago, I think it was called Animefest or something, it was really fun, got me a wooden buster sword and had a great time overall.

I've been meaning to go to Ani-Iowa but I've always been busy about that time of year. :(

Only ever been to SMASH con in Sydney, it’s a pretty small event. There were a few people I knew there that had a stall for their UNI anime club, so I dropped by for the day.

Been to ComiCon and WonderCon, and I've been trying to make it to Fanime. This year, hopefully.

I'm planning to go to AnimeBoston next spring (2010). Can't decide what I'm going to cosplay as, though I joked about going as a fake Death Note character "Lambda, L's twin sister, just not mentioned in the anime or the manga", because I look somewhat like I should be L's twin sister

I've been to a few and for the most part I just find my self really bored at them. Though this could simply be because Miami cons suck but regardless I've made a rule that I will now only go to cons if they are free or I know there are specific things that I want to do at that con. Otherwise its really just me and my friends just wandering around and make fun of people in horrible costumes.

Since I'm going to start getting disability now, hopefully this will mean me going to a con sometime in 2010. I'm hoping to say Sakuracon in April, but I don't know when I'm actually going to start getting money. Bleh. Oh well, that's only April.

I'd love to go to Otakon, but I'd rather cut my teeth on a con in the western US before going all the way to Maryland. Yeah.

Skippy's list for con staff

  •
  •
  • Quote

Postby Dartz » Sun Nov 29, 2009 1:04 pm

(Based on the most excellent Skippy's List for the USArmy, which I've lost)

Things Skippy is no longer allowed to do while staffing a con:

1: I will not buy trader merchandise before opening time
2: Then sell it at bring and buy later with markup
3: "I was only following orders," is not a valid excuse for solving the Naruto question.
4: Even if I have scientific expertise useful to the allied powers.
5: I will not Replace Naruto with AMV Hell 0
6: Nor will I replace any other PG-rated animé
7: I will not Replace AMV Hell 0 with Naruto
8: I will not cosplay as 'Pediatrician' bear.
9: The guest is always right.
10: Especially when they are wrong
11: I will not peacebond pencils. Just because Heath Ledger can kill a man with one, doesn't mean anyone can
12: TL's do not like it when you point out their stupidity and incompetence.
13: Especially TL's who will be on next years Committee
14: It doesn't matter if you know better, a TL's badge means they can tell you better.
15: The Staff manager is always right.
16: Even when he's on the other side of the campus.
17: I will point out to parents that it is their duty to protect their children from 'evil un-christian cartoons', not ours.
18: Especially not after showing AMV Hell 0, instead opf Naruto
19: Presumed consent only applies to showings, not to attractive EGL's.
20: Turning Chi on, is not as humerous as I think it is.
21: There is no more grievous offence than Mentioning of Man-Faye.
22: Except showing pictures of same to first-timers.
23: Will not tell press that we're 'Bigger than Otakon and Animé Expo combined"
24: Even counting attendance as a fraction of our relatively small catchment area, or other creative statistics. (This is true. 1000/4million or so.)
25: That guest is not 'Taller than I expected'
26: Cons Staffed -v- Work require is not an inverse relationship. More cons != Less work
27: Unless you're a TL or on the Committee.
