One aeronautics expert involved in the project said that, as a serious scientist, he can see clearly which parts of Gundam are technically feasible and which are not.

Nuclear-powered thermal rockets and spherical helper robots should be pursued, he said.

My brother works as an engineer for a defense company and, if I remember right, he said that various companies are trying to make the 360 degree cockpit monitors for fighter pilots.

Actually, Super Robots (specifically Eva or G Gundam-style ones) are very feasible. There's technology available for people that have locked-in syndrome that lets them use their nerve impulses to speak or control a robot arm. Adapt the "robot arm" bit to control a whole robot, and you have a Super Robot.

And just for shits and giggles, name the military branch working on it "NERV".

You might be able to recreate the control scheme on a super-robot, but the engineering hurdles needed to make the rest of the thing make it non-starter for a long time.

Further, since they are impractical for most applications (especially military ones where tanks do the same job with far less maintenance), why would you bother?

Ah yes, joyriding. You know, you can get the same effect by riding an animal of sufficient size...

Lol, yeah won't be surprised if the University's scientists come up with a plan to make every living thing except for humans as big as Evas. And take over the world with N2 mines. Not to mention that University would have to be high-security since I'd expect a lot of terrorists attacks...

Bah... the future of real military 'mecha' is not in the huge walking tank form (no matter how awesome the concept may be on paper) but rather as powered armor. Done right, this should create specialized infantry units with a balance between high mobility and armament/armor comparable to a light tank or APC that is perfect for assault missions in urban or other close-quarters environments.

TL/DR: Think Starship Troopers (the book), WH40k's Terminators, or Jin-Roh... not Gundams.

Saw this over on specops forum a couple days ago...

I think its pretty cool, its like star wars technology put to use.
Thats one of the reasons why I loved the original gundam series so much, because of the fact that almost all of it was pretty feasible. Hell the idea of orbiting space colonies was proposed by a scientist back in the early 1960's and thats where tomino got the idea. ;)
