In a sense you're quite lucky. At least you don't have to encounter many people who utter gems such as this: "OMGOMG LIEK SHESSY-SAMA IS SOOOO HOT!1111!!!"

Well, to be fair...he is pretty hot.

*swoon*

I'm at a crossroads when it comes to anime. Except for a handfull of friends and aquantances, most people I know roll their eyes when it comes to anime.

This is, as I'm slowly realizing now, a mixed blessing.

Right now, anime seems to be at a boom in both Japan and North America, if not around the globe. Series are being liscenced and dubbed faster than you can tug on the mask of the ol' lone ranger.

Personally, I think this could be bad.

Why? Well, for starters, I dislike a lot of english dubs. I'm not saying I won't watch them, I'm just saying that there's definetly room for improvement.

R.O.D. the tv stands vividly out in my mind. I loved the series when it was first released (and then later fansubbed :) ). Listening to the english voices now makes me kinda sick.

My biggest fear is how my favorite series (aside from Eva) will be handled:

Naruto.

I've read the Shonen Jump translations and...to be frank, they suck. They've completely changed, or "translated" almost everything, pretty much killing almost every link it once had to Japan.

Once again, am I the only one who thinks this way?

If so, maybe I'm being to critical, and should just enjoy the large quantity of anime/manga coming out. Putting quibles aside.

Oh well, zeeeen!

In the college I'm currently going to, I don't get any weird stares or prosecution for being into anime. I'm also into a lot of heavy Rock, Japanese Cinema, and video games, all very negative pieces of our society ( ) but as stated earlier, I don't make a big deal about it.

I do, watch, write, draw, listen, and wear what I want, and people think it's cool. (or if they don't, at least they don't gibe me any trouble)
They are polite about it, but most people seem to think it's below them (anime is porn or soap operas) or over their heads.(Eva makes their heads hurt)

I disagree with them and tell them so, but I don't bitch, and I don't try to convice them anime, esspecially Evangelion, is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

It's something that's very special to me, but, get real, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, and life is just a tad to short (and subjective) for me to hold it against them.

For me it's pretty much "I'll take the left road, you take the right road, and we'll meet somewhere in the middle."

They don't bother me about what I like, parts of it (Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell Stand alone, and Requim from the darkness) they even get into.
And I'm really cool with that.

I'm sorry to hear you have trouble Kiel, but just keep doing your own thing, it is THEIR loss after all, should they choose to abuse you for thinking OUTSIDE the box, and no skin off your nose...I hope.
I asked "And where would you take me?"
At this the beast laughed, tears made of my mother's blood leaked from his eyes.
"I will take you to every place you never wanted to be, and you will hate it."
"Then I will take you to every place you've already been, and you will hate that also."
"Last I will take you to the places you have always dreamed of, and that you'll hate worst of all."

Frylock: Danmit Kiel! You have seven! Seven country time harvest tickets!

Kiel: But how am I supposed to buy more anime with that?

Sorry, It's early in the mornin'.

For some reason, orthodox jews give me weird stares lately and try to keep away from me..

Hey, Max3000, have you ever read any of BatJew's comic dubs?

It makes the pain just...go away.

I wonder where the pain goes?

Damn, you people must live in sone pretty isolated, sadistic, boneheaded communities. People see my sketches and swoon, and they ain't even good. It would appear that any kind of acceptance reserved for you is all being piled onto communities like mine, where Japan is Christ and drawing is Jehovah. (And the Mexican flags soar.)

Tagging communities are the warmest places for people like us. Where once the nerds and geeks were preyed upon by the more socially evolved (and intellectually unevolved), both factions have found an artform which finds itself a common thread of severance from the previous generation. People who automatically dislike manga, I have found, are people who simply don't get enough art in general.

_don't do what sonic does

It is my beyond my comprehension as to how anyone could not like manga. Wouldn't a lack of art... um... make them more receptive to Japan made comic books?

I guess I'm rather lucky. When people see my Eva bag, or any number of anime/video game related t-shirts that I wear, they will come up to me and start talking to me, rather than ostracize me. In fact, I usually form a good repore with students in my classes that like anime and video games.

Case in point, I had a student bring in his GTA: San Andreas strategy guide on Wednesday, just so I could check it out (completely unsolicited).

When a student gets stuck on what to write about as far as a description paper, and he's wearing a Zelda t-shirt, I can then use the game as an example.

For me, it is a great way to connect with my students. But there are students, probably the ones that give the rest of you funny looks, that I really do not have much in common with, and do not have the same level of discourse. This, ultimately, is probably a negative. But, it isn't like I give anime fans in my classes As or anything. It isn't overt favoritism.

Er...shucks...

I wasn't fishing for complements or anything. I just think my students are interesting people. I tend to learn a great deal from them. I only hope they learn from me as well.
