The Hakkenden Shin Shou (1993-95)

The sequel to The Hakkenden OVA (1990-91), it continues directly from this one, so it's better to think of these OVAs as a series of 13 ep.
They are the adaptation of an absolutely colossal Japanese book of the 19th century with 106 volumes. That alone should ring some alarm bells.

Good things first, the animation is consistently fantastic, with lots of known animators working on this anime. They must have had a lot of freedom too, because the animation changes style a lot. Ep 11 in particular distinguishes itself by being so radically different from the rest that it even becomes difficult to understand who is who. In general the animation is characterized by realistic and fluid movements, with drawings whose level of detail varies greatly from scene to scene. There is usually only one level of shading. The backgrounds are pleasant to look at, with a couple being quite beautiful.

The music exists, but it is doesn't stand out, the only thing that stuck in my mind was the ED of the first series of OVAs.

Now for the story itself. How do I explain? If I simply described the plot, you wouldn't notice many problems. This anime technically does nothing wrong, but the execution...
Put in the simplest way, at the worst of times, it seemed that I was watching the first and last 10 minutes of a 2-hour movie.
At the best of times, I continued feeling that, but the good animation and composition of the scenes managed to distract me from these problems.
To help it out even more, the cast is gigantic, with characters appearing and dying quickly in almost every episode.
I'll assume that much of this is due to adapting a massive XIX century book, but some moments are so confusing that I am genuinely incredulous as to why someone thought it was a good idea to do them.

As such, even I, a person willing to forgive a lot as long as there is pretty sakuga, found myself desperately counting the minutes in each episode.
It must have taken me more than a month to consume this tiny series because of that. I just couldn't find the motivation to watch it

I really can't recommend this to anyone but the most ardent of sakuga fans or someone that really likes cool samurai fights.

6/10

After a movie night spontaneously didn't happen, I decided to watch the second season of Knights of Sidonia instead; much smoother than the first season, and without the starting awkwardness, but kinda weird in its own right. 7/10 fun show

Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Quite nice, but suffers from a single major problem: The plot and its pacing. The series is, in a certain sense, much more Japanese than 2199, as the concept of Yamato (the meaning of the word) is made central to the plot, in a rather ham-fisted way that feels like the writers were trying too hard. While having a integral theme to a series can be good, in 2202 it basically parasites the whole plot, which, unfortunately, at its base, is rather thin and episodic. So while on one hand the message of the series is a good one, the execution of its integration into the series also makes it its greatest weakness. The series starts up very slowly, with the four first episodes seemingly dragging on forever, while other episodes suffer from too much plot crammed into too little time. It all feels disjointed. Whereas 2199 had true tension, that is more or less absent from 2202. Also, while 2199 was science fiction, 2202 veers more into science fantasy territory, with the fantasy aspect of it often feeling more like a way to prop up the plot than anything else. Finally, for some reason the ships looked more CG in this one than in 2199, and many of the space battles were a bit weird (why the f... do they just sit there in formation while the enemy is firing at them? Looks like a tabletop game :cringe: )...

Also, I don't like how Funimation doesn't subtitle the theme songs. I want to know what they are singing, without having to learn Japanese to do so...

It's a shame almost everyone seems to agree that 2202 is inferior to 2199. I adored the original, and on a recent re watch I liked it even more, so hearing this concerns me a bit. Doesn't help that a lot of staff changed.
I'm still determined to buy the blu ray and watch it that way once I can, I just need the price to be more reasonable.

How does it look when it comes to the 2D animation? Is it still like 2199, with very detailed drawings, but generally little movement?

Yes. With a smidge too much panning across faces at times (contributes to the pacing issues).
It's not a bad series per se, and the plot picks up decently at about the half point. I must say I have not seen the original; it was never broadcasted where I live. So I don't know how much of the bad elements were already present in the original (beyond the basic plot), even though I can kinda guess based on other series I watched in my youth (the firefly-episode, very likely - it's a bit silly). At its heart, I think my main problem with it is that, compared to 2199, it feels so stereotypically shonen at times (i.e. the explicit references to bonding, the shots of every character as they support the main character, the new powers for the ship as the plot demands it).

Heavy spoilers for the ending:
SPOILER: Show
The ending, especially, feels like some deus-ex-machina ass pull. Zworder gets swallowed by the Ark of Destruction, the Yamato goes on a suicide mission with a crew of two, turns golden as it is infused with Teresa, things go on to ending from there, and we never learn what happened to Zworder afterwards. What is this, a Brave series?

Comparatively, the original Macross pulls off the same kind of central message much better, but perhaps I am being unfair to 2202 here, because that ending maybe comes from the original series and Macross is a decade younger than that...

If you haven't, it's well worth a look, although it features some of the old 90's filler of reused animation in transformation sequences, and character design that can be a little weird. I always thought of Utena as being the shoujo "sister" to NGE, not the least because of the Ikuhara/Anno relationship and Anno being the Shinji to Ikuhara's Kaworu.

The UK Blu-rays are on my list of things to buy in the coming months.

Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou
4 episodes in. Kind of disappointing how the show is using the same characters but changing the art style; starting everything from scratch and ignoring all the prior character development; focusing on comedy over action and giving the long-term fans no answers over what happened with Terra… oh wait, I might be mixing this up with another Titan of a show about Teens with “Go” attached to the end of the title.

“Nipah~” still manages to make me smile and cringe in equal amounts.
It's a terrible shame to see Satoko with a flesh-fang instead of an actual tooth, I am not on board this this trend.
The recreated “USO DA!” scene felt a bit flat; if you’re going to remake an iconic scene you better knock it out of the park, you keep the scattering birds at the very least.
Cinema has taught me that (generally speaking) 26 stab wounds to the torso would probably kill me, and clocking someone over the head with a…clock would have a far smaller chance of fatality, comparatively speaking anyway.

Tonikawa: Over the Moon for you
3 episodes in. Inoffensive so far, not sure where this may be headed or what the gimmick is supposed to be.
A young couple rushes into a marriage, hijinks ensue… is that it?
Is the wife an alien? The little gag of the husband’s name being “NASA” and the wife’s apparent ability to survive a close encounter with Truck-kun hints at the possibility. I’m hoping a more solid hook dangles in the next episode or two.

The OP gives me uncomfortable flashbacks to the original Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions intro; who thought that having people dart their eyes left and right rapidly was a good way to entice an audience to keep watching?

DanMachi / Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 3
Introducing new character Wiene as a scared and helpless, cute little bundle of joy the established characters want to care for and protect from all the bad things in the world was a simple, yet effective way of tricking me into feeling the same way. Well played.

I actually winced when Bell had his arm slashed halfway through the first episode. Well played again, a shocking moment actually felt shocking.

it's been almost 10 years I've watched all of Higurashi, but I remember enjoying it a lot. This new iteration doesn't really seem to be any worse or any better for that matter. Doesn't seem it adds anything. The only thing noticeable is the huge jump in quality backgrounds have made and how far the capability to animate 2D has further degraded. Like the MC gets up in the morning and it looks horrible, why not just cut away?

Fate Zero: Well, that was depressing. But not the most depressing and darkest anime I've watched (that still goes to Vampire Princess Miyu, which manages to outdo this one in bleakness with less gore to boot). I found some characters annoying, but grew to appreciate some of them (Waver Velvet & Rider, mostly). The show makes you want to give hugs to quite a few characters, including some that aren't very nice at all (Kayneth mey be an asshole, but even assholes don't deserve to end like he did). Kariya is a nice case of all the wrong choices for all the right reasons :sniffle: Basically all the idealistic characters either get (almost) broken or die, or both, while the bad guys win (kinda logical, since it's a prequel to an existing series).
Being by ufotable, the animation and art quality is truly something to behold, even though some CG sequences are very obviously CG and don't mesh very well with the more traditionally animated portions.

I had the same issues with this one, like I remember not walking away happy from the experience and feeling really down about it, it's why the only one I ever warmed to in this franchise was Fate Apocrypha because people sort of get their wishes and it's not so down it's still tragic and sad in places but has a more hopeful ending.

I was unaware of this, so was interested to try it. It's curious that people seem to disagree whether it is a remake or an elaboration intended to be seen after the original. But that didn't matter - in the event, I only watched the second episode in disbelief at how bad the first one had been, and incredibly I found it worse.

The story-telling is bad; the designs are bad, the animation is bad, and the attempts to introduce a sense of menace are simply laughable.

At last I am making progress with the Ranma 1/2 OVA series as just now I watched the first episode which covers Shampoo being cursed by the reversal jewel to hate Ranma. I know great grandma Cologne wants Shampoo and Ranma to get hitched but her method here made me hate her and wish for a terrible fate for her even more than Happosai usually would. What surprised me here was near the end with Akane's closest we might ever get to a love confession towards Ranma since it was under the effects of the jewel that Mousse put on her to get her to disrupt Ranma and Shampoo's wedding ceremony.

A "visuals aren't everything" twofer:

Platonic Chain: If you can get past the primitive CG animation, this short form series from 2002 is actually a mildly interesting snapshot of its time, as it tries to imagine what a near-future society with all-pervasive social media might look like. Its storytelling potential is pretty severely limited by its six-minute episode run time, a good half of which is taken by the OP, ED, and next episode preview, but it is an honest attempt in a very niche subgenre of social science fiction slice of life. We have our inciting incident when a young chaotic neutral hacker takes over an exploitable social media platform and starts using it for micro-scale social experiments, just to kill time it is implied. Essentially, she gives individual users access to the system's mighty spying and data collecting powers to see what they would do, and since our actual protagonists are three ditzy Shibuya schoolgirls, they do mostly banal things with it, like stalking cute guys via net-connected cameras. The show's strength is in its varied episode scenarios: many of them are realistically lame and embarrassing, but some are also funny, actually heartwarming, spooky and even surprisingly prescient.

The Case of Hana & Alice: Apparently a prequel to a much older 2004 live-action film. The rotoscoping looks absolutely vile, but I guess there's no helping it with a budget title. I can just tell that if this was a conventionally animated film, it would be a real goldmine of reaction faces. What begins as a chuuni cringefest eventually evolves into something genuinely earnest, which is an admirable feat. I'd happily watch another film with this main duo.

Haven't done this in the last 8 years. My have times changed; Type Moon and Trigger over take Clamp as biggest cancer in the industry, solid magical girl titles are frequent, Gundam got ruined by Okada only to be saved by Narrative, first Divers, and Thunderbolt, Macross finally made a 10/10, Satelight had been saving mecha this decade, Go Nagai still remains the king of anime, Studio Bones went does hill, and hidden jewels like the Eldoran trilogy, Steel Jeeg, and Acrobunch finally get translated into English. Welp, time to rank every anime I've ever seen.

Higurashi no naku koro ni Gou. As a fan (huge and old since 2006-2007, I've watched the deen anime when I was 8-9 years old for crying out loud !) I pretty much jump on everything higurashi related, and a lot of stuff is really insteresting to me.

So of course, when they announced the higurashi remake I was pretty much in the train of the Hype!, and when they announced middle serie airing ("Oh, sorry we forgot to said it but it's a sequel, not a remake, in you'r faces newcomers :chuckles: ") aaand apparently if we trust some clips images of the opening it's going to be
SPOILER: Show
a bit of a crossover with Umineko?

Well, fuck. I paced in my room in furry and panic not wanting a crossover like the characters going to the Rokkenjima Island/mansion

I was also initially pretty upset at how they revelead on of the most basic important spoilers in EPISODE 2!

But, finally I calmed myself, and relativised....

Firstly, new viewers got very vages ideas what the kakera place is actually is and it's real, deep philosophic and metaphysic meaning.

Two, if Umineko blend in I'm sure it just going to be something to do with Featherine and Frederica Bernkastel.

It won't be the extreme thing I imagined or at least, I hope so :shakehead:

Gundam 00 (first season): Starts up painfully slow, with too much exposition via the narrator and too little exposition via actually animated sequences. The first 10 or so episodes' battles are awful (or the series creators were really intent on showing how all of earth military were woefully inept), as enemy suits just keep position until they get shot by the Gundams. Fortunately the series picks up after that.. If I didn't know there was a second season where 3/4 of the Gundam Meisters are alive I would have been quite more shocked by the ending, because it borders on a rather graphic kill-them-all with the bad guys winning and only three of the good guys known alive (and adrift in space). The creators certainly went all out to show war is hell...

Nadia (of the Blue Water kind  ) episodes 1-4: Ah, Paris, with the Eiffel Tower sitting there surrounded by farmland (but only when seen from a boat :D ). The crowd laughing at would-be aviators crashing their contraptions is actually historically accurate (give about 20 years later). Female Shinji is surprisingly hot - also, you can see this is an older series, as Nadia and Jean getting soaking wet does not play up the wet clothes fanservice like in more recent series. The initial setting is quite Ghibli-esque (it's the airplanes and the scenery) and the animation pretty (for now).
The singularity is the rapture for nerds, dude. It's not going to happen. - Chuckman

Aaah, Nadia the Secret blue Water... I watched it before Evangelion(<---Whom I watched in september...Wow time fly by, huh?) I've watched it between march and april, the spring of this year so to speak. It's such a "feel good" show it's even not close dark enough compared to Eva.

I can relate. So far, I have seen the first three episodes of season 1 Gundam 00 and it's been very boring aside from the animation in both the character and mechanical designs but the dialogue could use some razzle dazzle. :irked:

Yeah, the start of 00 is kinda.... rough. I outright dropped it for a few months after a certain event, only to find out that it would have gotten really good two minutes after. But such is life.

The tale of the Princess Kaguya: A beautiful, prettily animated rendition of a very old folk tale, with a few aesops (money cannot buy happiness, enjoy your time on earth, ...). There are a few things in it that make little to no sense without some basic knowledge of Japanese culture (so the people who did the age rating missed the veiled reference to a girl's first menstruation :D ), and I'm not entirely sure whether it's actually suitable as a children's movie in Western societies (except as the trauma-inducing kind) due to certain themes and the relatively downer ending. Most enjoyable for the period-correct scenery porn, the story, and Kaguya being a fairly typical Ghibli heroine (i.e. strong female).

Nadia eps. 5-14: The episodes are still quite episodic, but some plot starts to seep in, and thanks to the sometimes rather long recaps at the start of the episodes it probably wouldn't have mattered if you missed an episode back in the day. Episode 8 contains a nice Eva-esque explosion of the enemy base. Nadia's character development is a bit all over the place, with a sudden onset of very tsun-tsun behaviour that is a bit annoying.
The episode "Run, Marie, Run" is a prime example of mood whiplash. It starts off with Marie running and enjoying the island the way a 4-year old kid can enjoy something (a really enjoyable sequence, I must say), then she gets lost, and in the second half she's still running...for very different reasons (people with guns, then a killer robot). :( And it ends with Captain Nemo shooting someone dead (and Nadia freaking out). :um: It's the kind of episode that you watch differently as an adult than as a child, I think. Kid enjoys herself (yay!), gets lost (eep!), encounters bad guys who threaten and pursue her (oh shit...), escapes after meeting someone she knows (phew...) - and then in the last couple of minutes a bad guy tries to shoot one of her friends and gets shot very dead in front of everyone by the good guy leader (Jesus!).

Well it's kinda true that's Nadia the secret of blue water have sometime a somewhat really cartoonesc atmosphere. The "run Marie, run!" was to me really similar to a pokemon episode when they are on a deserted island and found back they pokemon, and somehow end up in a rollercoaster wagon, who end up flying in the sky

Sound familliar, neh? Well when I watched this episode with Marie and Sanson and suddenly the wagon flying in the sky in high, totally irrealist way, I was like "Eh...I already saw it somewhere...Oh yeah, Pokemon!"

So yes Nadia the secret of blue water can sometimes have a really cartoonish atmosphere, whom to me remind me of the kind of the early first seasons of pokemons anime
