Guess what? Season over.

I watched less anime than usual this season, and most of them aren't noteworthy enough for me to mention them: some isekai, a harem... harmless stuff that I mostly forget after I watch it.

Anyway:

Psycho Pass 3 and the new movies- The sequels no one asked for! I didn’t expect anything after the disaster that was Psycho Pass 2, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The first movie is just okay, but the second and third movies are great little self-contained stories that don’t overstay their welcome. The third movie in particular is quite good and I think it’s better than the Gen Urubochi movie we got a few years ago.

The season is made up of 40-minute-long episodes and is mostly solid. A highlight of this new season are the fun character interactions. Animation is high quality most of the time (the last episodes had a couple of rough moments). The main character is a little overpowered with is barely explained, almost magical detective powers, but I can get over that.
Unfortunately, the ending is just a cliffhanger for the next season or movie. Still, if this level of quality is maintained, I don’t mind Psycho Pass being a franchise with semi regular new content.

Movie 1- 6/10
Movie 2- 8/10
Movie 3- 9/10
Season 3- 7/10

Blade of the Immortal: This is still ongoing but so far, I’ve been enjoying it a lot. I haven’t read the manga, but from what I’ve seen on the internet, this adaptation is very abridged. It does not feel abridged to me though.

The animation is generally solid, with only a couple action scenes having noticeably suffered so far.

It’s a samurai show with blood and guts, what more could I ask for?

9/10 so far.

Vinland Saga: A good historical drama. You don’t see that every day. And one that maintains a degree of historical accuracy too! Sure, I can’t pretend it’s totally accurate to the period, it obviously isn’t. And the battles are standard anime exaggeration. But it manages to feel authentic despite these obvious exaggerations.

It’s a gorgeous show too. There’s CGI, but it isn’t overbearing, and the 2D animation is pretty enough to make me forget the CG even exists at times.
And the music is also fantastic, lots of piano, witch is surprising, but it fits really well.

This season only adapts part of the manga(witch I have not read), but the ending feels conclusive enough. That said, I sure would like a sequel.
9/10

Enen no Shoboutai: What is this? A shounen with good cinematography and direction? It cannot be!
What we have is a solid action show elevated by the already mentioned cinematography and direction. The animation is at times inventive and there are rarely boring shots. I’ve seen people complain about the fanservice, which is bizarre, because there isn’t almost any fanservice at all.

It’s getting another season, this one ends in a satisfying note, but it is clearly incomplete.
7/10

Babylon: MAGASEEE. It’s really good so far but the ending might be total garbage. I really want it to be good though because the main villain is fantastic.

I’m re watching Shin Sekai Yori now that I’ve gotten it on DVD and I’m noticing many things that went completely over my head the first time around.
For example, the animation is a lot more experimental than I remembered. Nearly every episode has some cool looking animation sequence.
The cinematography and background art are even prettier than I remembered as well.

I’ve also found myself caring more about the characters than when I first watched it. I guess before I was so caught up in the twists and turns that I didn’t end up caring much about the characters, but this time around certain moments hit me emotionally.
Knowing what comes also makes the already omnipresent sense of dread become almost unbearable. It’s like every action the characters make takes them closer to a horrible fate they can barely control.

Some spoilers ahead

SPOILER: Show
The director of the Ethics committee also is even more sinister than I remembered. She straight up lies several times (the most obvious one that I didn’t notice before was saying she’d give Saki her memories back because she had a stronger psyche. She didn’t) and the thing she says about giving group one more freedom on purpose sound like completely made up nonsense in order to get Saki’s trust. She’s also probably lying about her grandson not affecting her decisions. And she was probably going to kill Maria and Mamoru if they came back. I initially felt government was awful, but efficient, but on a re watch I’m starting to see they’re actually somewhat incompetent, which is even worse.

I should note that I feel like the animation is vastly improved over the TV version I watched 7 years ago. My memories may be failing me tough.

Really fantastic anime, it’s going from a 9/10 to a 10/10 for sure.

---

Next season doesn't look like much, but Babylon and Blade of the Immortal are still airing, so it'll be okay.

I'm not particularly interested in this series proper, but the reception of it is kinda interesting. ANN painted it as sexist garbage (which is... you know, just because its world view is twisted a work of fiction can still be good, methinks) while Digibro raved about it. The meta is pretty interesting with this one.

You saying you didn't notice the animation being far from ordinary kinda blows my mind, tbh. It was the reason the wonky script didn't throw me off before the finish line, lol.
I'd argue, that while the animation is often interesting, it is rarely good, as it doesn't really feed into the narrative at all. All in all a very chaotic production, imo.
But, it just goes to show how differently one can consume a work of art, I guess. Interesting ideas all around, but the execution leaves much to be desired, imo. I wouldn't rate it higher than 4/10.

Yeah, the only experimental animation I remembered was the one in episode 15. I'm just going to defend myself by saying I was like, 16 when I watched it. It is interesting though, how I remember some things clearly and others I forgot completely. I guess I need to re watch a lot of the anime I saw back then and see how my opinion changed.

About Babylon, I wasn't aware ANN though it was sexist. How did they even get that conclusion? Bizarre.

I don't like Digibro at all, but it's cool he's giving it some publicity. I just hope it manages to deliver. The last episode was kind of weird, but I'm hoping it's just a small misstep.

It comes to the end of the season, and I still haven't watched any more of the airing shows than I had a month ago, which is surprising given how much I had been looking forwards to Chihayafuru 3 when it had originally been scheduled for spring. Instead, I have been busy with the backlog, being about halfway through Heroic Age, a mechs*-in-space from the Fafner crew, which had the misfortune of airing at the time as Gurren Lagann, and a few episodes into Bamboo Blade, also from '07.

And also rewatching Kemono Friends.

*there are actual mechs for the grunts, but the key players make it more like Attack on Titan in Space. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Age was an inspiration for that.

Some while back I started following the manga, as it's from the same author as Planetes, but at about the same time the scanlation threads on /a/ started to refer to it as "Farmland Saga" -- after its violent opening arc, the still on-going manga has apparently spent most of its run being very small scale, with retarded levels of "if you kill your enemies you will be as bad as they are" pacifism -- so I gave up on it. Any continued adaptation would run into this roadblock.

Most of the SHAFT animation team moved to David Production in time to pick this one up.

Kono oto Tomare! has ended, for now. Much of it was a little frustrating, because in a story about playing musical instruments (specifically, the Koto), we were not often given much chance to hear what it sounded like! But the penultimate episode gave us a whole piece, pretty much. I also found an older disk of koto music associated with the manga, which filled the gaps nicely.

The anime has been a good representation of the manga, though, and very watchable. It's reached a good point to break - and the manga hasn't yet finished the next major part of the story, so I guess it'll be a while before it returns, if it does.

As a manga, nearly as good as Piano no mori (The Piano Forest), but the anime adaptation was better.

The irony being I watched Heroic Age all the way through, while I dropped Gurren Lagann after the production issues in episode 6.

Nothing new in the starting season has caught my fancy yet. But I am intrigued by one of last season's shows which is continuing - Mugen no Juunin - Immortal which I shall probably start catching up on later today.

I will also continue with MHA, of course.

In the last fiew weeks I watched Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt and DieBuster.

Especially Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt was a ideal Test-Run for me for FINAL, because the ending was very merceless and it's sad there wont be a 2nd Season, so the ending made me more certain that I shouldn't want how it ends with FINAL.

The Ending for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is the Anime Equivalent to the Ending of the first DOOM  SPOILER: Show

I've been meaning to catch up on PP as I loved S1 and enjoyed S2+Movie. Glad to hear it improved after S2. Do we know when the dub for those films and S3 is coming, it's one of those rare shows I prefer the dub for.

While waiting for the new season to start, I put all the series I had been part-way through on hold, and rewatched KemoFure and GaruPan.

Of the new season, Heya Camp△ being a short short hardly counts, so I tried Kirara Asteroid as a cute girls doing things in the same sort of vein option, but wasn't impressed. The curse of 4koma source material strikes again, I guess. Somali is looking pretty, but I'm not sure how much endearing small girl antics I can take.

On the positive side, there's the known quantity of Railgun T, and the rather off-beat Eizouken. Not only is this another Yuasa anime, it's an adaptation of a manga which I first became aware of due to some moaning about some of the typesetting in the scanlation --

All caught up on the first three uncut version episodes of Overflow. While the designs for the characters and the sensuality are knockouts, they always have to get us confused with the we should because we're not related but we shouldn't because we are technically related since childhood angle most of these hentai titles seem to thrive on, like it's their niche.

Ranma 1/2 The Movie 2: Nihao My Concubine

As good as the first one with more focus on developing the several romances scattered throughout the harem though if only it were a bit longer like say as long as the first movie because the one hour running time makes it seem like a two parter episode block that could've been saved for the tv series.

In the end, I dropped Kirara Asteroid and Somali as failing to hold my attention (the dual monitor test -- is there something more interesting on the other screen?), and in their place I have finally watched another episode of Chihayafuru 3 while keeping up with the other series from this season mentioned above.

Also finished Fafner and watched Fafner : Heaven and Earth, both of which were OK, but nothing spectacular; in particular I didn't notice any significant difference after the writer change part-way through, which is something usually mentioned about the first series. In retrospect, having started with Exodus, and then gone back, may have been the right thing to do.

Watched Violet Evergarden.

The series edges on Type Moon, or Brynhildr in the Darkness Chunnism, but since it checks super natural powers and divine contests at the door, and behaves as a coming-of-age story instead of as an action-oriented Seinen, it's thankfully better than either.

The ending was meh. I felt like I was watching Roseambo crossed with those train episodes of FMA. The antogonists chew... everything, and the bomb scene was janky as ****. I know some of this may be due to the fire bombing of the KyoAni office, but I think the story going in an action direction here was not a good choice.

I'm grateful they at least didn't go the full derp of the Light novels

SPOILER: Show
Showing us Gilbert isn't dead

As that reveal just completely undercuts the emotional core of the series; contending with, and moving on from loss.

BTW, was anyone else thinking Violet was a clockwork robot at first? That honestly turned me off the series; I didn't decide to go back and watch to the end till I watched this, which turns out to be an unrelated song, that kind of hits on one of the show's themes.

Babylon: So, this wild ride is done. I'm not sure what to think about all this, but I can say with some confidence the second arc wasn't nearly as good as the first. Really, most of this America stuff could have been removed and I wouldn't care much, even though it brought some moments of unintentional hilarity at the start and a decent payoff at the end.

The ending itself was good. I liked it anyway. A bunch of people will hate it though, no doubt.

Anyway, only thing I'm completely certain about is that Ai Magase is awesome.

Darwin's Game

I was told this was like Accel World.

But Accel World had interesting Augmented reality ideas and world building. This does not.

This is poorly animated, in episode 1, and the tension it builds around the invisible panda character disappears once you realize he is the one
the complete novice MC will kill first.

Same to when you realize the rules of the game don't set up a separate reality like Accel world. And sure, the app can stop my phone from calling 119 (JP 911), but what stops me from borrowing someone else's phone to do it?

In the world of survival games, this one wins the Darwin Award.

Plunderer

No one behaves like a human being in this show. The protagonist doesn't even understand the world they've been living in their whole life. None of the humor is funny.

Plundering is a good word to describe how this show steals time away from watching better shows.

Saw the first episode of Great Dangaioh and they got the Eva pilots' personalities down pat with Hitomi being the Asuka by complaining about Kuya not speaking or the enemy moving slow as well as bragging after one battle that they can beat any enemy, Manami not as stoic as Rei was since she speaks more but has that calmness with her emotions that screams Wonder Girl, and Kuya ain't as whiny as Shinji (yet...) but he seems to be fighting to be praised rather than for the world (as evidenced by his brother's military tags).

As we come to the end of the season, a season where Corona-chan has proven herself more potent than a Level 5 Esper, I've been driven to the backlog once again, and watched the first cour of Overlord, a harmless diversion which proved to be quite amusing, with all the "Oh, shit!!" moments, just before the over-confident NPCs get kerb-stomped by our dorkish MC.

And, once again, a note to say that you should all have been watching Eizouken, and those of you who haven't you have plenty of episodes to watch, and, so far, no hint of production delays.
