While I'd dearly love an S2, the facts don't look so encouraging.

Episode 12 took us just past the end of chapter 54 -- roughly where the tanks had reached at the start of this year -- out of the current 70-some, having adapted about 24 chapters' worth. Apart from the side trip to the States and the Kengan Asura crossover omake strips, the material skipped was mostly the in-gym, new exercise plus fan-service, chapters -- the ones with less "cute girls do muscle things" slice of life, and less scope for a matching post-credits exercise-along.

Awwwww, guess I'll have to read the manga. I've really enjoyed the anime and got a few people at my gym to watch it even. My roommate and me even got a few goods from amiami like a sports bottle and keychains.

Seasons come, seasons go.

Outgoing:
Carole & Tuesday came to an end. It was a pleasant watch, with some nice music, but although things were largely wrapped up in the final episode, I found myself not really caring very much. We didn't get to see any kind of reconciliation between Tuesday and her mum, and several episodes had been given over to introducing characters (such as Desmond) whose purpose was only to sing along in the last episode. In the end it was not as good as I'd hoped it would be.

Given was great. The music was fun, and did what the show needed it to do. I loved the designs. And the story of confused young (gay) love was appropriately confusingly presented. Indeed, it gets a load more confusing in the continuation of the manga, which I presume will give rise to another season in the not-too-distant future. If you're into BL and its interaction with the dynamics of a rock band, then this was for you.

Fruits Basket - the 2019 remake. This has covered much the same ground as the original anime, also with some rearrangement of the order of things. However, it has ended in such a way that the continuation into the rest of the story will be natural - something which the ending of the old anime had rendered pretty impossible. I don't dislike the previous anime, as I understand the mangaka did, but I will happily concede that the new version is better. Curiously, the Japanese dub voices are all new, whereas the English dub voices are nearly all reprising their roles from fifteen years ago! I was content with either. It's a decent manga, and it deserves to have a complete anime adaptation. We are only 1/4 of the way in by page count, but as so often happens the manga gets more spread out and flabby as it proceeds; I rather suspect that it could be decently completed in another two cours, though I could see them giving it three - four would be too stretched IMO. If you liked the old version, this is a treat; if you didn't, then it's different enough for you to give it a whirl.

Sarazanmai. Like its predecessors (Utena, Penguindrum, YKA (Yurikuma Arashi)) this was largely incomprehensible on first watch, though very pretty. It has been described as a BL variant of YKA, but that doesn't really say anything useful at all. Whether it will end up getting the recognition that Utena and Penguindrum, at least, have done I cannot say... It probably will - at any rate, I enjoyed it first time through more than I did YKA.

Incoming:
Kono oto Tomare! is back for another cour. The first episode felt like the real completion of the first cour, actually, but set up the start of the progression to the next arc of the story just fine. This is a well-made story about relationships, past and present, and different ways of taking responsibility, both individually and in a group (the group being the school club for playing the Koto - a traditional Japanese instrument somewhat like a zither). The manga is well on the way to reaching the point at which a third season would be possible, but isn't quite there yet.

I haven't yet come across any other new shows that I want to watch; doubtless I will be persuaded by something, but in a way I hope not, as I'll have less time for watching this autumn anyway!

Ongoing:
I'm still enjoying Black Clover, though I'd be hard put to write a real recommendation for it!
"Being human, having your health; that's what's important." (from: Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi )
"As long as we're all living, and as long as we're all having fun, that should do it, right?" (from: The Eccentric Family )

More anime, come on.

Granbelm: Non gundam mecha are very rare these days, so Granbelm immediately stands out just for having 2D mecha animation. Also, if you like Gundam, there’s a couple obvious (and a few not so obvious) references for you.
Unfortunately, other than that, I didn’t find much too keep my interest. The main characters in particular are just so dull. Even later episode twists don’t manage to inject much interest in them. It also goes from very serious to goofy from one moment to another and I was never sure how seriously I was supposed to take any of it.
It’s not bad, I enjoyed a few moments of it, but I feel it’d fall apart on a rewatch
7/10

Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo: If you like Mari Okada this will be fun. If you don’t it’ll be torture.
It’s about girls dealing with puberty. The show tries to have a bit of an edge with a few raunchier scenes, but most of the time it’s too tame for my tastes. Still, it can be a fun way to waste your time.
6/10 or 7/10, I’m not sure.

Kanata no Astra: What is this? A good sci-fi anime? In 2019??
Yeah, and a good one at that. It’s essentially an adventure/comedy/drama in space. Some of the characters are a little cliched and some of the twists are kind of dumb, but other than that, it’s a solid ride throughout.
Also it gets some points for having a good epilogue, witch is something ot nearly enough anime have.
8/10
Given: A show about a band? Sign me in! Unfortunately, this one is 90% drama, 10% music. The few songs they do play are quite nice though.
The drama is all about gay relationships. It’s not my thing, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying this anime. It does suffer from ending just when thigs are about to get interesting. It doesn’t feel like a very satisfying conclusion. It has a few excellent comedy moments, witch surprised me.
7/10

Carole and Tuesday: I’d call this a disappointment, but I already had very low expectations from the first episode. Most of the conflict the show focuses on just isn’t very interesting. I couldn’t care less about the Mars VS Earth immigration nonsense. It’s not like showing how musicians react to complicated issues can’t be interesting. But it’s done in the most boring, standard way.
The main characters are also boring. They go trough they’re little character arcs and everything but again, it’s all generic stuff.
I think I wouldn’t be so bothered about this if I liked the music they play. It’s all pop garbage and some RnB and I couldn’t care less about any of it.

Katsume Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e- Men versus cool looking beasts in Civil War era America. The setting alone is interesting enough to carry a show. Most of the anime is episodic and the stories aren’t anything amazing, but they do their job well enough.
This one also suffers from a non ending. Might as well have a “buy the manga” sign at the end.
7/10

Cop Craft: It’s an old cop new cop thing. Expect some references to western stuff and characters being sarcastic a few times. Expect some fanservice with the 18 year old (yeah right, and I’m the pope) alien girl.
Most episodes are the main cast going on a case, but there is a main plot and it’s an interesting one that manages to do an okay commentary on immigration. Image that, current political topics being in an anime.
The only serious annoyance in this one is the animation: there are a few great moments, most of the anime has okay animation and then you have a few terrible scenes. If you can overlook that though, it’s pretty good.
Probably my favourite anime this season (I’m not counting Vinland Saga).
8/10

I'll also mention Bem, the best show of the season nobody watched(suffers from a rough ending) and Vinland Saga, witch is the best anime airing right now (I haven't read the manga).

---

The new season is okay so far, but I'm going to watch less anime this time.I'm busy with video games and my Master's Degree.

Bem as in Yokai Ningen Bem? Is it a reboot like GeGeGe no Kitaro? Why didn't I hear about this?! I hope they keep the theme song!

Apparently? I had no idea this anime was based on an 1968 show! I liked this new Bem, but I have no idea how similar it his to the 68 and 2006 anime.

I've only seen 68 but I really like it; should be interesting at least to see this reboot. I'll post the similarities after watching it. We just had that Ashita no Joe re-imagining too right? What's next? Astro Kyudan? I'm just trying to think of old influential shows but there is that rumored new Speed Racer/Mach a GoGo too.

I've heard so mixed reviews from Carole and Tuesday; some people seem to love it; others seem to hate it, almost no middle ground. Really should check out more than 1 Episode (thought it was OK)

While waiting for the only show I'm really interested in from the new season, I stumbled across the raw of the Lensman movie on YouTube, so out of morbid curiosity -- having heard nothing good about this take on the classic space opera -- I sat down and watched it.

On the plus side, it's clearly animated on a movie budget, and generally makes good use of what was for the time high-end CGI (except in one bizarre TronxPacMan-style sequence), and generally has high production values. On the other hand, it pastes a few names from the source onto a Star Wars meets Dirty Pair sci-fi comedy thriller, with random slapstick, and even more random disco scenes. Interesting to have seen, but that's about the limit of it.

Also filling in the gap, rewatching Fafner Exodus, which I think benefited from now being able to tell more of the Hiraiface characters apart (good robot series, you should watch it); and Long Riders, which was a pleasant watch, especially now that pleasure cycling season is past (a generally charming cute girls do outdoor activity show).

Was it the Harmony Gold or Streamline Pictures version? The HG version, much like Robotech, is Americanized to the T with editing and localized scoring. The Streamline version, which I happen to still own a VHS tape, keeps the Japanese score and only some of the HG cast reprise their roles.

Word around the campfire is that because the Smith estate was so disappointed in the anime, chances are it'll be till 2040 that we get a proper release because the only way to find it is the internet or VHS.

I had a big paper to work on over the weekend and had Dragon Ball GT on in the background for part of it. Got through the first 15 or 16 episodes and it was pretty fun. There's some obvious problems with it, most of which are in Super as well oddly enough like 'JUST TRANSFORM ALREADY!", but I liked the cute short single episode story lines. Once they got to the robot planet and Dr. Myuu though it got a bit too dense and I switched to music. I'm actually kind of excited to get back and watch the Baby saga later this week.

Doing some more poking around on YouTube unearthed a completed set of subs for Saint October, an odd little series from 2007 that killed every sub group that tried to work on it in 3 episodes or less, so I've started again at the beginning and, with a decade plus more anime under my belt, finding it goes down more smoothly than it did back in the day. And by complete contrast, it turns out that Funi have the whole of Soukyuu no Fafner available on their channel, so that's added to the list too.

One of these days, I shall also have to get around to picking up Chihayfuru S3

I'm currently watching The Rose of Versailles. It's very good and the animation is so gorgeous plus the opening theme song is very catchy too. After I finish The Rose of Versailles I'm gonna watch Cutie Honey, Cutie Honey Flash and its movie, and then I'm gonna watch B Gata H Kei Yamada's First Time. Also, before I started watching The Rose of Versailles I had just finished watching Princess Tutu and I didn't really care for the ending. I mean, why couldn't Fakir write an ending that would've allowed Ahiru to live as a normal human?

Finally gave the Ocean dub of Gundam Seed episodes 4 and 5 a fair viewing. Given my history of liking characters that most would consider unlikeable and also the fact that I just adorned my avatar with Flay Allster in a kimono, I am on my own there. I kind of do agree with Yzak's natural (no pun intended) reaction towards Athrun in interfering with his attempt to destroy Kira and the Strike Gundam, Athrun can give all the excuses he wants about he wants to capture it for ZAFT but he isn't doing himself or his buddies any favors by causing dissension in the ranks.

Oh lol, just watched Seed myself not all that long ago. Yeah, Yzak is probably the most reasonable (and occasionally hilarious) character - as for Flay, I think it's best if I don't give my opinion on her

High Score Girl II
This show charms me; I love the gradual introduction of Arcade and console games; showing what each stage of gaming was like for people living in it... but I hate how long they've dragged out the love triangle. I thought we ruled out the Blonde girl in season 1 when Yaguchi beat her, why did she take this long to realize

"Oh, he likes her because she's an overwhelming force of a nature he struggles to contend with... I can't approach that."

She already fought Ono, she already understood what she was, and she already lost Yagichi's attention; in season 1. This feels like an alternate re-telling of why she lost that battle.

Completely pushed to the side was Street Fighter Alpha II. WTF. "SFII is evolving and so shall I" That's what you promised show, why u no do?!?

Just watched Fate Stay Night: Heaven's Feel II Movie
I didn't like it. Ever since the first film I felt this adaptation was rushed but was willing to forgive it since the overall tone felt the closest to Fate/Zero. The second film followed the same path but further expanded on the bad pacing this trilogy has (UBW was also horribly paced if we're being honest). Not counting the little skirmishes, it feels like this movie only had one proper battle - but even that was below standard as far as Fate/ battles go since there was no explanation behind the two parties involved in the battle. The adaptation is also taking a lot of liberties with how much lore & dialogue scenes are being left out, which is understandable given the limit run time, but when completely pointless scenes or anime original tidbits are present in abundance while important character defining moments are omitted - it feels like something is wrong. Frankly, Shirou is just as stupid and hypocritical as he's ever been, Sakura is not really sympathetic as a character, and Zouken's (as the closest character we have for a villain as of now) actions regarding Sakura are poorly explained and make no sense. I almost wish they gave this route the UBW full anime and expanded on the lore rather than making the former a stretched out high-school drama and the actual decent successor to Fate/Zero a rushed mess of a trilogy.

I've paused Soukyuu no Fafner at about the 2/3 mark for the moment, when things are building up for the climax, and have only watched the first episode of Chihayfuru S3.

The reason for the hold has been more ransacking the archives for backlog items which came way earlier in the queue, starting with Chobits, which was another of these "complete" manga adaptations that finish while the manga itself is still wrapping up (see also Planetes, Bokurano, etc, ad naus), so could only approximate the canonical end, with the most obvious difference being that Chi's inconveniently located reset switch never actually factored into the anime's resolution. Because 1 cour shows weren't really a thing back around the turn of the century, it also had to spread itself out, so that, as well as overly extending the one chapter gag about Chi's pantsu to a whole episode, about a quarter of the episodes were completely anime-original SoL. In the adaptation, too, it brings home the generational change in technology in the years since, even more than the manga, which I reread a few months ago -- smartphones haven't quite become "it", but that's only for lack of the sexbot chassis.

Overall, very dated in style as well as subject, and having seen it all, I'm happy to cross that off the backlog, even if I was right in dropping it after the first disk, back in the pre-broadband days when it would not have been dated. Verdict -- of historical interest only.

Also, rewatching from the start, Saint October, which started off being something very whimsical, somewhere in the vicinity of Scooby-Doo, style-wise, with cartoonish villains ranged against the magical-girl Goth Loli detectives. I'd seen about the first third before subs seemed to have completely stalled, so I was pleased to see the first cour end with what seemed to be a darker turn. It was slightly disappointing that the next episode, the only vestige of that event was in the new OP animation, but from that point the stakes did slowly build all the way to a rather well handled dénouement, which was better than the potential angst-fest that the midpoint seemed to be setting up.

In all a surprisingly good series that I am glad finally got subbed, despite the rather patchy nature of those subs. Verdict -- well worth watching.
