Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...

I agree that A Silent Voice has far more to it than Your Name (which just seemed contrived to me, however pretty it was). The number of works which look at the bully's point of view and the effect on themselves of their actions in such detail is vanishingly small, so it stands out for that alone. As my wife is deaf, and this was not handled well for her at school, I was also very much drawn in by the handling of deafness quite aside from the bullying aspect.

The original is a manga, which is available in English as well; I have it on my shelf, and it is as good as you'd expect (it's seven tankōbon volumes, so has a lot more detail).

While all the normies were busy fawning over Your Name, the true elite patricians understand that A Silent Voice should have taken the crown.

(I am being facetious)

Talking srsly for a sec, A Silent Voice and your Name are equally beautifully executed, but is much harder to digest opposed to Your Name, which suffers from a lack of complexity in its emotional range.

You hit the nail on the head there because that was the other issue I had as Taki to me was really bland character wise and so was Mitsuha in a few ways and I just don't feel like the characters really learn anything from each other, even Taki's act of making Mitsuha come across as rebellious so she'll be more popular really falls flat on its face because its just a stupid idea as rebellion leads to punishment in school in the long run.

Plus it doesn't feel like they feed or change each others lives enough and because the gender switch is so 80's retro at no point do the characters learn well its okay to be masculine or feminine in some way and break social norms in any meaningful way. Also less said about the constant non con breast grabbing the better as this really hurts Taki's character because she tells him not do this and he ignores it which understandably turns some viewers against him and makes him feel like less of a nice guy.

Thank You, I really struggled with the construction of this sentence, and while it thankfully kind of conveys what I meant to say, it still reads wonky as fuck, lol.

With Your Name specifically you have to take into account as to where Gender discourse and perception and depiction of sexuality in media are in the US and Japan.

I think to most coastal Americans Japan is still in the Stone Age in regards of gender politics, while Americans still seem to have a very Puritan, prudish angle on sexuality (despite having made great strides in the last decade - remember Nipple-gate? As a kid I was baffled, that this was a scandal)

Kinda fascinating, because in a way the movie is accidentally saying a lot about whoever this movie is watched by. It really opens up a whole spectrum of how this movie could be read from different cultural perspectives. Which is kind of a rare coincidence in a global world full of market researched block busters.

I remember nipple gate though it was viewed differently in the UK it was more laughed at and what's the big deal (As this had happened with the Spice Girl Gerry in the 90's as she had a nipple slip during a concert) but I do remember watching the US reaction and being stunned at the huge bash lash.

Yeah I have been looking at Japans cultural differences recently due to what happened with Franxxs as I wanted to understand it more it also sadly led to me watching the BBC Two documentary- Japan's Secret Shame which is really hard watching deeply depressing but really shows that Japan are wedged in some kind of early 70's, 80's mind set.

The most interesting thing I've seen from this though is how anime that would have been very popular in the 90's is now getting backlash due to the colliding ideals of east vs west and I saw this with both Your Name and Franxxs on a massive scale and it was deeply surprising to me but it shows that cultuer collide is having a deep impact on how we view some anime and manga in this decade.

They wanna sell their shit globally, they maybe should take that into account - then again, that's what's led to Hollywood movies ending up being sanitized as fuck.
So, regarding Gender politics in Anime... It's a double edged sword.

Yeah I feel that to that is a huge double edged sword I just thought with the rise of netflix and anime has become much more main stream and global they'd wake up more...even its just miner thing like age changes to some kid characters from 14/16 (Even in the dubs)

Nice to see some more Battle Athletes love around here.
I remember your first gushing over BAV; you said something along the lines of Ichino being the life of the show for you, so knowing how the first act ended- I figured you had dropped the whole thing.
Happy to hear you stuck with it and enjoyed the whacky ending.

Re:Silent Voice- I was lucky enough to catch the comic whilst it was still available on Crunchy. Preferred it over the toon.

With the recent watch of the final sixth episode, I am now finished with Can Can Bunny. I have to say that Kenta seems to have much more chemistry with his other conquests than the intended main romance of him and Suwatee that unfortunately aside from a satisfying kiss to cap the series off didn't get down to more detail like the only other scene with him and Shuree during the typhoon.

I just got finished with a rewatch of Orange, which I really liked when it was broadcast back in 2016 and which I still really like. There were just a couple things this watching made me wonder; a. why did they have to include the thing about the squad sending their letters to the Bermuda Triangle?? I would have been completely fine with having no idea how they were able to send the letters back in the time. and b. how was it that within a nine month period there were three shows(Orange, Erased and ReLife ) about people repeating the past? Was it a coincidence or some kind of conspiracy???

This summer season is really good. I actually really liked the spring season too(and winter, and last fall...not last summer though[I watched Knights and Magic....]). I've got four shows I'm watchin':

My Hero Academia: Very good, but in a bit of a lull in the story at the moment. Gone are the villains and and instead we've got heroes in training throwing rubber balls at one another to get a license... the stakes just seem too low at the moment. But it is fun to see the heroes from the other schools and the show still have its charms.

Then I've got the three series I watch on Sundays when I'm hungover which are:

Hanebado: which is a sports series with badminton as its subject. I picked it up on a lark and its actually turned out to be pretty good. It's like Ping Pong where in the people think more about the sport they play than they probably should. They've already done a pretty good job of fleshing out two of the main characters and I'm excited to see where they go from here. The animation, especially during the badminton scenes, is really fluid but the character designs aren't the best....

Planet With: which is a bit strange but very good. I honestly don't really know what the hell is going on or where it's going, but the shows got a nice style and I like when the weird shit happens.

SnK Season 3: I've been wondering a bit recently why this show is only on episode 40, while My Hero Academia is on ep. 55??? Anyway, the arc they're working through right now was easily my least favorite of the manga so far, but I still found myself enjoying the first couple episodes of the season. Maybe it's because I like seeing Levi do his thing, or maybe it's because my expectations are a bit low? And I realized something with the first episode of this season; Eren's VA sounds kind of strange...like he's 30 years old or something...
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

Re My Hero Academia. What's happening here is that in order to get to the end of this cour without starting on the next big (and long) villain arc, they are having to pad out the licence tests. This week's episode was almost entirely not from the manga but anime-original filling. In the manga the pacing is fine, but here in the anime it's gone a bit off. Todoroki's part of the episode is a single page in the manga, and all the stuff in the closed room is completely new.

Ep. 15 of Eureka Seven was so so filler where once again Eureka is dense in human matters but it did offer a glimpse into Renton's killer instinct with the Nirvash which complicates his relationship with Eureka. Have to see where this goes.

Cool! ^_^

I finished watching the film Redline directed by Takeshi Koike. What I love most about it besides the soundtrack is that it dealt with behind the scenes politics and such as well as the racing action but at the end of the day, it's a love story on wheels with JP and Sonoshee front and center.

Redline really is a visual treat, for sure, though I found the story didn't much interest me (not saying anything against it, though).

I'm please to note that in rewatching Eureka SeveN I'm picking up details I missed first time through. Also a general reminder to myself that it really is good.

Digimon Adventure tri: Determination

I had it in my possession for months without a complete view of it's English dub and finally I sat through it. I have to admit there were parts of the dub that made me cringe like the military guy and Izzy sounding like he was enunciating some words but there were also cute moments like Meiko's sneeze and Meicoomon's "Pretty please" to Leomon. Also Kari has maturity beyond her years for the way she handled Joe's whining like a pro in the end.
