I've downloaded them, but I don't have the heart to watch them.

Erased – I’ll sing along with the choir and say the first five episodes were good, engaging and heart-warming stuff. Suddenly we’re back in present day and… zzzzzzzzzzz.

Most recent ep was back in the past, and very good IMO.

I like the present-day Erased episodes. Having the story span multiple time periods changes things up nicely, since Satoru has to take on a very different role in the present. Also, Airi is great.

Spent the last three days binge watching Dragon Ball Super. Up to episode 24 right now. Pretty good so far. The animation is a little hinky in some episodes but it's not as awful as the screeching on the internet makes it sound. Great to see the old characters back in action.

There are some things that bug me. None of the female characters have really gotten to fight and Videl has given it up in favor of being a housewife. 18 got one scene where she tried to fight Lord Beerus and got taken out immediately with everyone else.

The first two arcs were kind of boring. That's probably because they're just adaptations of Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, which I've already seen as movies. I really wish they'd do something to beef up the supporting cast so the fights aren't all "wait for Goku and Vegeta to save the day." Dragon Ball's always been like that, but it wouldn't hurt to mix things up a little.
Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

A fantastic anime and film, I think I'll have to go through it a few times to get my full thoughts on it though, I wouldn't mind doing such a thing however.

After putting it off for such a long time due to my issue with whether or not i'll keep watching the show despite the criticism it gets, I saw the episode in Robotech where Bowie meets Musica for the first time. I gotta say if it wasn't for Musica, I probably would've thrown my collection in the trash by now since the girl is stunningly beautiful! Here's hoping she talks a bit more than what her debut ep. brought with her just mumbling a bit.

The animation of the Space Cobra TV series from the 1980's suits the pulpy sci-fi aesthetic much better than the animation of the more recent OVAs and TV series. Really improves the viewing experience. The movie was also pretty cool. And Cobra must have been a strong influence on Space Dandy, both the character and the series. Too many similarities for it not to have been.

Re-watched Mind Game on netflix and, while it's still up on my all-time favorites list, I came out feeling more strongly that Tatami Galaxy is my favorite Yuasa.

After watching the two (really good) Digimon films directed by Mamoru Hosoda, I decided to watch the first Digimon TV series (subbed). It's an average children's anime so far, but episode 21 is definitely a highlight. And not surprisingly as that's the one episode Hosoda guest directed. I'll probably keep watching, even if no other notable directors came in for the remaining episodes.

Just saw this, so here's a late reply.

A pattern really can't be made out of a single instance. If you're going to take something I did once (and didn't even really do) and claim it's something I do regularly, then you're wrong. I don't think things will disappoint as a rule. Like I said, it's not that I'm blindly saying BokuMachi will disappoint, but that I actually know what will happen and find that it's personally not to my liking. Do you see the difference?

Gate: The JSDF

The concept behind this series ultimately isn't anything new, quite a few pulp writers have been writing about what would happen if you transported a modern military into a pre-industrial setting for a while. Be it Eric Flint (1632), SM Stirling (Island In The Sea Of Time), or Harry Turtledove (Guns Of The South). But this is probably the first time I've ever seen the concept executed in a Tv show, let alone an Anime. So that alone intrigued me.

It's like someone took the best aspects of Last Airbender, Game Of Thrones, 12 Kingdoms, and threw in a healthy dose of Tom Clancy.

It's not perfect, it does have some aspects to it that I really just do not care for. It's hard to take a setting where everything is trying to be realistic seriously when the Harem aspects do show up. Rory for instance, is a great character. But her design just clashes with the realism the series otherwise plays more or less straight. She could have been exactly the same character, but would have fit in much better if her design and costume had been influenced more by Game Of Thrones and less by Otaku Cosplay Monthly. Seeing realistic military fatigue

Quick aside: the culture of this fantasy world is rather inconsistent. There are 18th century french maids existing alongside 1st century roman soldiers.

The Characters are actually rather likeable, though a bit one note in some cases. Much like many anime series before it, Itami is a bit of a bore as a character. He's not without positive qualities, he is a well trained soldier and when the situation calls for him to get serious he's nothing short of an animal. However the characters aren't what sell the story, but the political machinations and Game Of Thrones inspired intrigue that result from two drastically different worlds clashing with each other. The JSDF want to help the people suffering under the empire but can't because of the government wanting to avoid conflict and a political fiasco, there are the people in charge in our world who want to exploit the world inside the gate for resources like oil, there are the people in charge in the special region who want to avoid annihilation at the hands of the JSDF, and Itami and the group are stuck in the middle trying to be the voice of reason.

From what I've seen of the Manga, the Anime is quite a bit tamer when compared to the much more sexually explicit and politically charged source material. I've read that the original author is a bit of a Jingoistic nut. Fortunately, at least so far I haven't seen anything that could really be interpreted as anything especially extremist in nature. Though that could just be the censors trying to stick it to the author.

But what I love best about this series, and the reason I wholly recommend it, is that it portrays the military as a force for good. True it's not MY Military. But as the son of a veteran, I appreciate this goes to great lengths to portray the best parts of a modern military. The code of honor, the brotherhood, the devotion to humanity and decency even when faced with the most despicable parts of human nature. and it does it all without going to the extreme of either over-fetishizing the Military, or demonizing them like a lot of military anime do.

I also deeply enjoy how the people in the Special Region are better off simply by default of the JSDF being there to give them modern conveniences and services. It's also nice to see a reminder of how good we have it by comparison to those who existed centuries ago. It's really shocking seeing how little the common person in a medieval setting really had, and how the 'rich people' of the Special region react to the common products the ordinary people of our world have. It's surreal seeing a medieval princess treat a Cup of ramen like the greatest thing ever.

My favorite part so far is how Rory cut through the bullshit and called out a politician for trying to undermine the JSDF. Calling her ' a spoiled brat' for trying to paint the JSDF as an oppressive colonial force when (At least so far) they've done nothing but help the people and it's always Cathartic to see hundreds of barbarians get totally genocided by the JSDF.

TLDR
Theres a lot here that makes it a great watch, despite it's issues. Highly recommended.

The “fan-favourite” dragon arc (as crunchy called it in its promotions) was surprisingly short; I figured we wouldn’t see any dragon slaying until the last episode of the season, but right in the middle of it? Huh. Makes me wonder what they’ve got saved for the main event, I hope it isn’t Jericho vs HHH.

I wish I hadn’t marathoned all the available episodes so far. The battle with the dragon wasn’t nearly as exciting as seeing… what’s her face… <checks wiki>… Kuribayashi unload on a bunch of armoured imperials in ep 2 (14). Experiencing a week long break between episodes and feeling the anticipation build properly would have no doubt made the experience far more satisfying.

Ep 7 (19) - Being the oldest of three siblings, I hate seeing immature big sister/brother characters like Arpeggio; see also School Rumble’s Tenma Tsukamoto and especially K–On!’s Yui Hirasawa.
An old lady acting like a cheery school girl? Don’t see that very often.

Myriad Colors Phantom World
Light and entertaining so far. Very nice animation; character designs are easy on the eyes; Ruru hits the right balance of annoying/amusing for me, I also like the fact that she’s apparently an original character for the TV adaptation.

I'm really sad, Kyo ani wastes their talent in animating a mediocre script/premise... I'd love to see some stellar action material treated by their aesthetic craft.
Also, Ruru being included makes a lot of sense she does feel strangely foreign in the series.

Going through every Gainax anime ever. Quick thoughts:

-MAGICAL SHOPPING ARCADE ABENOBBASHI was a wonderful surprise. I liked it so much, I actually really enjoyed the ending. Once I found out that Anno had an hand with it, I couldn't get mad at it.
-Useless I come across something worse, THIS UGLY YET BEAUTIFUL WORLD is bottom of the barrel material. At least the director got better at his job as time went on.
-Currently working my way through MAHOROMANTIC. Not depressed yet.

Awesomely Shitty

Digimon Tri:
Image
It's a huge nostalgia bomb for me, I hope it gets an english dub eventually. But just judging from the first movie, I'd say this is the reboot the original cast of Digimon deserves. Given the rather limited budget of the original show, seeing the fights between the digimon animated in such a smooth style is almost surreal.

I really love how they updated the whole feel of the show. Technology is way more advanced today than it was in the 90's, so the Digimon use the technology in new and interesting ways. Also, seeing what I once saw as kid characters drop some adult humor is actually pretty funny and shocking. TK asking Joe if his girlfriend 'is human', and Mimi teasing Izzy about his crush on her.

One thing I'm confused about is where this takes place in the timeline. It takes place after the first season because the original cast is here, but it's clearly not in the same universe as Season 2 of the original series (with Davis, Yolei, and Cody) because Digimon aren't widely known to the public. But TK and Kari have Season 2 digivices, with no real explanation for how they got them, and there is
SPOILER: Show
this rather cryptic scene in the start of the movie that seems to imply that Davis and the Season 2 kids got killed off/phased out of existence somehow.

Finished watching Wicked City for the first time with the Manga UK dub. I have to admit that I very much prefer this dub over the Streamline dub. Some lines in this dub give the experience more "authenticity" if you will. Also, getting to watch the end credits unaltered thanks to the DVD being the Remastered Version was nice. I'm gonna be humming that ED tune for a while. ^_^
