Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2015 to now

After a cour and a half of the franchise, Symphogear G at last managed cohere to enough to deliver a decent number of set pieces in the last half-dozen episodes, and Bikki-tan is starting to get the hang of this magical girl business, including a closing move worthy of the White Devil herself. It was the other characters that needed a bit of a talking to, for a change -- "Excuse me, ladies, but why not postpone the emotional reunion scene until after you've stopped the bad guy who's slinking away stage right?"

All in all, trashy fun with cute girls finally figuring out how to punch everything into daijoubu.

After spoiling myself on it (and learning that the prod. team announced the TV series would be a faithful adaptation), I'm certain that BokuMachi will end up as a disappointment.

:shinji_boohoo:

The last two episodes weren't very good. Airi is a boring and contrived (lol choco bar ruines lives) character and the present day stuff isn't as interesting (or well-animated, written or directed) as those 3 episodes set in 1988. Def gonna be fanfics written that take it in the direction that it should have gone.

Why?

Pretty sure we won't need fanfics for that.

Safe thinking. Expect most things to end in disappointment and you’ll occasionally be pleased for being wrong.

Been casually watching KonoSuba (God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!)
Negatives: it’s yet another one of those living in a fantasy vidya gaem world shows along the vein of DanMachi (Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon?), Sword Art Online (first arc) and Overlord.
The art and animation is…

Image

a bit crappy.

Positives: it’s a comedy, so it pokes some much needed fun at the genre.
Episode four’s encounter with the enemy general was well done; his castle is bombarded on a daily basis, so of course he is justified in complaining to the townsfolk like an upset neighbour.

I expect this will end in disappointment. Looking forward to it.

Apparently I expect most things to end in disappointment now? You're creating a pattern of my thinking based off of one instance. And it's not even me expecting something to disappoint without any grounds to be thinking so. Like I said in the first post, I know what's going to happen and dislike it.

Just to be clear with y'all, it's specifically something towards the end that I take issue with. I do know that some of the episodes between now and the finale will be enjoyable.

If Erased failed to disappoint it wouldn't be a A-1 pictures show anyways.

It's really just a personal problem I have, I don't know if most people would share it. It also seems like I've made it out to be a bigger deal than it actually is, so sorry for the "teasing", guys.

BokuMachi Spoilers  SPOILER: Show
So, after another Revival, Satoru is able to save Hinazuki but ends up comatose for 15 years. Once he wakes up, Hinazuki shows up with her baby, and is apparently married to Hiromi (that androgynous kid). Yeah, that's it. I know that my ship not sailing is a pretty shallow reason to say the show is a disappointment, but it kind of came out of left field for me. They spent like 3 episodes building up this relationship between the two (and more development will take place in upcoming episodes) and then this happens. Main dude's fine with it, of course, so it's not like it's any NTR shit. It is kind of annoying though, seeing as how the main murder mystery plot of BokuMachi isn't very interesting to me. Most serial killer stuff isn't. Oh, and Airi becomes main girl. Lame.

Oh, that. Yeah, I knew about all of that, and have no problem with any of it. My main concern is this:

SPOILER: Show
When Satoru wakes up from his coma he no longer remembers who the killer is, and his friend Yuuki is still in jail (I think). So I'm wondering how he's going to find the killer, clear Yuuki's name, and keep his mom safe in the meantime.

I can understand the shipping issues, but consider:

SPOILER: Show
How would Satoru/Hinazuki even work? He's a 29-year-old guy, and she's a fifth-grader. If he averts the problems and remains in that time that's skeevy as fuck (eclipsing even Bunny Drop levels of "Do not want!"), and if he flashes back to his main time and finds himself married to her or something he's cheated since he didn't get to actually build that relationship. They work a lot better as star-crossed lovers than as an actual romantic pairing.

Huh... Seems like a bad case of needlessly expanded story. After the huge dip in quality in Episode 5, I'd rather have seen a more rigorous take on the material in form of a movie.

bokumachi spoilers  SPOILER: Show
Yuuki is not arrested in the timeline that Satoru is in. Satoru prevented the murders from occurring in his town, as the teacher/murderer dude backed off after his attempt at murdering Satoru. No one was arrested. It does appear that his memories will be restored, and Airi is apparently the "key" to unlocking them.

more spoilers  SPOILER: Show
See, what I'd been hoping would happen was this: Satoru would lose his revival ability upon the completion of his task. It's a power that seems to have been triggered by the immense sense of regret and guilt he felt from originally not being able to save the lives of those kids + plot magic. So by saving them and preventing further murders by stopping spider sensei, this ability would disappear along with his memories of that other life that technically no longer happened. In other words, that other life, characterized by regret, would be ERASED. He wouldn't be sure exactly how he did what he did, but what matters is that the murders were stopped and that he changed as a person, and positively effected the lives of others around him.

Started Shirobako. It seemed nice, but I dropped it after six episodes because it was going nowhere fast. I just finished the second episode of Erased, which is promising, but I don't know how this is going to stay interesting for an entire TV series.

IBO #20: Gods damn it, Eyebrows really needs to go away. Won't someone just shoot her already?

Good ep otherwise. I like the slow ones; the combat scenes are just more of the same, but it's the downtime where this show really shines. I like the fact that the writers are taking things slow rather than moving us from one combat setpiece to another. I do wonder how it's gonna end, though; with the election, maybe? We only have five episodes left, so I have to imagine that every one of them will count!

I agree with this except the statement that the combat scenes are "more of the same." I think that the battles pack more of a punch than in other Gundam series, and part of the reason for that is because of the slower paced episodes in between the ones with the battles. This is different than with other Gundam shows where there is a battle almost every episode. I wonder how IBO is doing in Japan? I realize the measure of success for Gundam is different as model kit sales count as much, if not more, than TV ratings or Bluray/DVD sales, but I would still like to know.

Macross Frontier ep. 5

It's such a relief to finally be seeing the positive side of Sheryl as a fun loving, flirty type after the last few episodes had her pegged as an arrogant bitchy type. I still don't have a profound attachment to the songs of Frontier aside from the ED theme, sorry to say.

Shirobako unfortunately focused on what felt like the most boring part of anime production, and was really only worth it for the bits of fanservice, like Hideaki Anno making a cameo. Thought it was slightly better than average, which is probably shitty by your standards, but Erased is turning out to be a pretty entertaining show. Sometimes it feels like they're dwelling too long on something but then there's always a twist or some revelation.

The weird thing for me is that the niceties of animation production didn't really matter to me. I made a vague effort to keep the scheduling straight but, beyond that, it was all about the character interactions and how people just go about getting things done in real life no matter the personal dramas surrounding them. In that sense it really rang true for me, and was compelling regardless of the specifics of t he tasks at hand (and, honestly, I found both of the anime works boring and tedious in the extreme; I was amused by the fact that the staff who made a show I found so interesting picked such unspeakably boring fictional shows for their cast's subject matter, but perhaps that was intentional).

Yeah, they both look like terrible shows. I don’t suppose you saw the OVAs? Neat idea, if a little dumbfounding.

View Original PostOrnette wrote:Shirobako unfortunately focused on what felt like the most boring part of anime production

You mean… every part of it?

Macross Delta – Oh lordy, that dancing CG mech was horrifying. Also- singing right into an infected’s face cures them? Um, okay, but what about the other poor bastards you were blowing up?
Oy, what a bad first episode.

Erased – I’ll sing along with the choir and say the first five episodes were good, engaging and heart-warming stuff. Suddenly we’re back in present day and… zzzzzzzzzzz. Reminds me a little of Only Yesterday in that respect.
Following StarShaper’s predictable pattern and keeping expectations low.

Spoiler conversations suck, people. Just start a separate thread.
