The main character is bland and annoying, the good guys are unsympathetic, the animation is awful, it's filled with pointless and gratuitous fanservice and gore that don't advance the plot or themes in any way, the plot was hackneyed, predictable, boring, and very edgelord, with the only thing that actually surprised me being a completely unforeshadowed revelation that a character was evil.

It's not hard. Just read the wiki is all you need to know. There is an app that translates the quest objectives and gives you a better overview of your collected ships girls which helps as well. However you need to take part in a lottery first to get into the game. I was lucky with my first try.

Watched Rolling Girls. Kinda meh. Whoever says this is like Kill la Kill needs to get punched in the face with a giant scissor to remember. Feels way too aimless, like the battles are sorry excuses to have sakuga animation which I don't mind but it's hard to care about what's going on.

Finished (finally) rewatching Transformers: The Headmasters. It's pretty decent, to me at least. I'm not gonna lie and say "Omg, 10/10 BEST ANIME EVER MADEEEEEEEEEEE" or anything like that, but as a Japan-only children's anime that continues on from an American cartoon that was animated in Japan and Korea based upon an American versions of toys that were originally from Japan, it's enjoyable. I think it's actually better than the original Transformers cartoon, if only due to the fact that there actually is an overarching plot throughout the series (rather than just episodes are basically contained with some callbacks and some multipart episodes) and the fact that, obviously, Toei did the animation for every episode, and the animation quality was much better (wasn't perfect, but at least it was better than the fucking AKOM episodes) than a lot of the episodes of the American cartoon. I'd rank it a 7/10, if you know what you're getting into.

Just watched it, that was a pretty good match. It was hilarious when the STUG and the Italian tank were jousting with each other to get into firing position. Those sure were some tiny tanks that Anzio had!

The only thing that bugged me was how they apparently put tanks on Ooarai's team that weren't even salvaged yet at that point in the story, but I could just be remembering it wrong.

Yuri Kuma Arashi is getting weirder and weirder. Because it's sexy.
Durararax2!!Shou stays funny as hell and remedies two of the previously as horrible perceived characters in the show in the most awesome way imaginable. I'm glad to be back in Ikebukoro.

If you mean the car club recovering the Porsche Tiger, that was found earlier when the 1st year team got lost in the bowels of the ship. The lineup is augmented in the next match against Pravda.

Gonna be the Twin-Tail ep 5

I may be the only one on here who has or is watching this series. The eponymous heroines vs. aliens with all sorts of fetishes. This is the most brainless anime I've seen in recent memory and it really put itself into that category for me in this ep, but I find it good for something light that doesn't even try to evoke much thinking.

:.Raises hand.:

Oh me! I watched it!

Altough, to be honest, the only thing I remember is that the animation quality went to atrocious lows. Episode 10 was a disgrace, if I'm not mistaken.

And I can't forget the ending. Shit, can I even call that an ending? When will you get these things right, anime?

Shingu continues to delight:

I'm not even particularly into tsunderes, but this is perfection. And it's also cool how the main character is basically Kyon in training.

While Cross Ange is definitely watchable, I am rather saddened that it seems to be developing into just another modern Sunrise series. And here I was hoping for an irreverent anti-anime (modern Sunrise should be a ripe target for heavy riffing; unfortunately, only the next episode previews somewhat qualify) or at least women's prison exploitation played mostly straight, but nope. If it's Sunrise mecha, it's gotta have a fancy Illuminati plot. And Fukuda just isn't much of a director. Case in point,

SPOILER: Show
Vivian's DRAGON transformation in episode 12

could've either been an effective body horror moment or an effective surprise comedy moment after all the carnage, but what we get is just a really bland, unsatisfying mix of both. Or it could be that I'm suffering from modern Sunrise burnout after finishing Valvrave.

Even though it's not really helping much with the overall quality of the show, at least Cross Ange is self-aware about being T&A trash. Valvrave on the other hand is disturbingly sincere and non-ironic in its clumsy Dentsu boardroom spawned awfulness. It's clear that Sunrise desperately wants to milk Code Geass for all it's worth, so "edgy Geass clone" is now apparently a genre unto itself. Others have tried as well, but perhaps Guilty Crown, despite doing cripple moe so very well, wasn't quite as perfectly hip as it could've been. So marketing researchers were consulted again, and it was concluded that kids these days are into social media and sexy vampires, and thus we got Valvrave. The baroque omnipandering is unmistakeably Geassian; entertaining on first viewing but ultimately numbing to the senses. Seemingly dramatic things happen, but mostly because dumbshit characters decide to withhold crucial information from one another. It's basically fix fic fodder for SRW, and I'm looking forward to that.

As my eyes approached this line, reading down the post, I thought to myself how high-minded (even "pretentious", if you will) and academic-sounding anime analysis can be on this site, and then I hit this line and I just wanted to laugh.

Unrelated: I won't besmirch how anyone chooses to enjoy whatever they're into, but the entire approach I see in this post and epitomized by the portion I selected is just so alien to me. If you've ever read my analyses of video games, I don't even talk about the creators. I feel like nearly all my fiction-enjoying experiences are more enjoyable when I don't think of the work as an extension of a particular person or company but instead as a creature in its own right, a view into an alternate reality that exists for its own sake. I didn't know what a Shaft series was nor what typically characterized them nor that Bakemonogatari was one of them before I saw such mentions on EGF and I still prefer to leave all that behind when I dive into the series itself because it inevitably gets between me and the world presented. Every creation is like a child screaming "Look at me for me, not as my father's child!" and that's how I want to view it.

So is it that the erotic component is there, or that you feel the show is trying to get past entirely on that without providing any other value? The latter is something I can understand -- I've dropped many shows that went too heavy on the T&A appeal without offering enough else, such as Najica Blitz Tactics, or Highschool DxD which couldn't keep my interest (though Highschool of the Dead did, if that makes any sense).

Its the latter.
Also high school of the dead has the fact that it is undeniably awesome in the fight scenes, it takes the impractical as fuck rule of cool and runs with it, so it manages to hold interest.

This however is just fucking tasteless garbage that has nothing else going for it, it wasn't porn enough to be porn, but it focuses too much on erotic shit to be an anime, even an ecchi anime.

It doesn't even come close to being ecchi. Aside from a gag or two like that in some of the episodes, and the character designs, that's about it. Compared to Najica which had over 50 shots in the first episode alone, while still managing to be entirely plot driven show. Not saying this Ange show is any good, though it's just now starting to get kind of interesting, Sunrise has been doing this kind of stuff for years.

Approaching a series as the work of its creator is certainly not the be-all and end-all of criticism, but it is one of the most essential factors of reviewing. There are no series that exist in its own vacuum and often the themes and ideas of a series are much more clear when compared with the creator's other work because it wraps the series in a relevant context. Besides, when reviewing a series you are essentially comparing it to other series anyway. Your impression is based on you comparing your previous experience of the medium with the series you are reviewing so purposefully ignoring the work of the same creator doesn't really make sense to me.

Cross Ange

Postby Fireball » Wed Jan 21, 2015 12:00 pm

I just fucking hate Tusk. Fair enough, I laughed at the bj scene, but it's clear how fucking hard Fukuda is self-insterting into that character again. His presence also turns Ange into a drooling retard. I have no idea why he is even there, he adds nothing to the plot. Case in point, the last two episodes while providing valuable info-dumbs have taken out all the steam for insufferable forced romcom shenanigans.

I kinda agree with Nick, the show was better when it was just prison bitches fighting for their lives against dragons from another dimension.
