An update, TWR won this year's Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year and Best Music Score, congrats to Ghibli and Joe Hisaishi!

That's right. I go to Hampshire (I'm transferring but that's another story lol) and take Japanese at Amherst College so this is very convenient for me.

Well, kiss my ass on Sunday.

That's the theater where I saw the movie last week. The 1:50 show is dubbed, 4:25 and onward are subbed. I'd go see it again.

Just saw it. It was beautiful, unlike any miyazaki I'd ever seen and certainly a fine, if somewhat sad, sendoff for him.

SPOILER: Show
naoko's death was jarring and made me feel things. Their mutual decision to cut her life short is still kind of difficult to accept for me, but I hope I understand with some time to reflect.

Finnish premiere was on Friday and I finally got a chance to see this feature.

It was exquisite and probably the most visually stunning feature in studio Ghibli's filmography which says A LOT. It's very different from anything else in Miyazaki's filmography though it's still recognizably work of the great auteur, of course. I'd say in several ways this is Miyazaki's most Felliniqesque feature as well as his first feature that can be characterized as character study. It's really rich film in terms of character, atmosphere, ambiguousness and thematic complexity but the storyline is bare bones as hell. It ought to bore little kids to death and in fact did exactly that in premiere I attended which resulted in less than ideal viewing experience thanks to audience...

I'll post full blown, indepth review after I catch the feature second time next week.

What really caught me off-balance was how great Anno's performance as Jiro Horikoshi was after the strange initial impression. He plays the guy like he was Jiro and it shows. Honestly, I thought Anno winning Best Seiyuu award at this year's Tokyo Anime Awards was just good brother network patting each others backs for the lulz but after seeing the film I think they went out to reward exceptionally good performance by amateur.

You could just go to see it in theatre, y'know.

Nah, I'd rather watch the film illegally at home, instead of paying +8 Euros to see it in theater.

That's fucking dumb. The experience is really amplified by theatre screen and sound system.

I saw it in a theater (the first Ghibli movie I ever did) and what struck me the most about it was the lack of action or conflict. Not in a bad way, though; I just think this is one of the only times a movie has EVER approached the subject of warfare and those who contribute to it in such a nuanced, subtle way. Despite the movie being about the Mitsubishi Zero, the Zero's role is never glorified.

It opened at the local art-house on Friday, and clearly it is being very popular -- the mid-afternoon subtitled showing I went to was relocated from the smallest to the largest screen.

Yeah, it's Miyazaki's love letter to aviation, and a fitting finale to what Porco Rosso, Laputa and even, so help me, Howl, had been preparing for. All the voice acting was good; but at times the subtitling overcompensated for the elliptical nature of the Japanese language by filling in from obvious context (the number of different renderings of "Hai!", for example, when using "uh-huh" would usually have done, let alone how they handled familiar phrases like "Nii-nii no baka!")

Watched this at the cinema yesterday.

Absolutely fantastic movie. Anno did a great job as Jiro. Easily one of the best movies Miyazaki has ever made.

Just found out about the BD!!! :D :D :D
I'd love to see this at the cinema, but here it's only dubbed. Spanish anime dubs are shitty dubs.
Man I am so excited. And it seems all of you guys liked it.

I don't know if this is the right place to put this, but I think it doesn't need it's own thread either. The documentary on Ghibli, "Kingdom of Dreams & Madness," is getting a North American release.
