Aw yeah, Sailor Jupiter is here! She's so ready to kick butt, she doesn't even need Luna to tell her how to transform! She's so awesome.

Very enjoyable episode. Can't wait for the next!

Makoto hits the "Sukeban" boxes pretty well, and delivering Makoto's lines in Ryuko's voice would have really been the icing on the cake. (All she needs now are a pair of red scissors to use in gardening...et voila!)

She sounded a lot more like Ryuuko in the preview at the end of Episode 4, but I am fine with this too.

I have to say Mako-chan looks so cute that she definitely would rock a wedding dress like the ones the Sailor Scouts were gawking at. I also wonder how long Rei's "I don't trust men" motto will last when some boy comes along and sets her hormones on fire.

Maybe if you shut up and stop over analyzing everything you just might get it........

Lol. Not this Rei. It's kind of funny how she's a polar opposite personality in the Manga vs original Anime. If you want to know why she's so distrusting of men, you can read "Casablanca Memories", a side-story which takes place right after this episode. Naoko said she wasn't really happy with how it came out (she was under a hard deadline and had to finish it fast) but it gives some insight into both Rei and Mako's personalities.

Great, more details to make children look even more posh. They should focus on the wonky animation instead.

Looking at the pics, they might have touched up the over detailed character designs even more; but there are no signs that the animation itself actually got better.
Man, I hope someday this trend of designing such intricate character-designs, that no one except for KyoAni is able to animate them fluidly, finally dies.

They reanimated the scenes. Where do you think the frames came from? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1Nlp4tkfXk

^Did they improve the transformation scenes? Because I really like transformations sequences in general, but the conspicuous CG is kinda hard to ignore in Crystal's current state..

I just watched Episode 5. As usual, my reactions before getting up to speed on the topic:

:rei_hissyfit: AAAAH MAKOTOOO! How was there ever a time that she was not my favorite? Simultaneously the most masculine and feminine member of the team (to borrow a description I remember from somewhere, probably Wikipedia), you'd think I'd be crazy about her all the time! I fell in love with her all over again in this episode. Oh Mako-chan, I'll be your tall boyfriend.

Not only did she showcase two separate abilities all in her first episode, she even defeated the enemy single-handedly! マコちゃんがスゲエッ! :kaos_victory:

This episode turned me into a little girl. (Not talking about my fan-gushing over Makoto here, either.) It's amazing what channeling yourself through the characters can do for your attitudes towards things. I don't normally think about wedding dresses; this episode made them beautiful to me in those moments where the girls were girling over them. I really felt like I was feeling what they were feeling -- my heart raced with a sense of undirected romance, and it gave me pangs of my own significant-otherlessness in sympathy with theirs (or at least Makoto's).

I say "little girl", but that's inaccurate. It'd be more appropriate to say that in my own still-manly way I empathized with the feelings of the characters even at the height of their stereotypical girlishness in a way I can best describe as the inverse of when they were playing that arcade game. Like a strong silent guy who pulls out the key to his motorcycle and you notice the Hello Kitty pendant dangling from it, the episode (the whole show, really) gave me a profound sense of ease that liking something "girly" is okay, even in combination with more stereotypically masculine interests, and okay no matter who you are. I say this not as if the show gave me that (anyone who's known me around here should know by now that I was already like that); I say, rather, that the show projected it. It breaks barriers not by running away from the stereotypes but expanding them until they are no longer such, defining them by what they include instead of what they exclude.

Each and every one of the girls so far has played that same video game. Anyone notice that? So it's not even like a token thing; they're all gamers, and action gamers, as if it's totally normal.

Moving on: During this episode, namely the part where Usagi befriends Makoto (which was adorable), I thought to myself how well I'd been sold on the idea of Usagi as the leader. When it was commented that Usagi could befriend anyone, I had practically thought the same to myself as I was watching the scene. I don't remember the 90s series well enough to say for sure, but I remember in that series wondering on a regular basis why the hell Usagi was the leader, but in this one my first and only thought when Luna presented the idea at the end was "Yep, that makes sense".

Also during this episode I even got a bizarre sense that the writers might have been responding to fan criticism. When Tuxedo Mask ran off at the end I suddenly noticed that he had done far less compared to previous episodes. As far as I can remember all he really did was lead them to the scene. And letting Makoto save the day all by herself -- well, probably not a reaction to fan feedback, but it almost felt like fanservice for Makomen like me.

My memory of the 90s series is pretty hazy, but Makoto came off different to me in this -- in a way that I really really liked. (Oh, here I am going on about her again, aren't I.) It's the summation of many little things. She seemed more serious and masculine, but like she's not aware of her own demeanor and the fact that she's intimidating people. This is best exemplified by the moment where someone asks her why she isn't wearing the school's uniform and she leans in close to the guy (whom she towers over, which was really hot) and gives her reason in a way that comes off as unintentionally (and hilariously, and adorably) intimidating. The social version of the well-meaning giant who doesn't know her own strength.

Is that how she was in the 90s series and I've just forgotten? Am I basing these impressions on too little and I'll see her act more like I remember later? Who knows! I'm excited to find out.

Funny, so do I recently.

Easily the best episode so far. Of course, going off the pattern of the rest of the series, it's because the source material was actually solid.

Nope, this is pretty much how it is in the manga as well. The only difference is they left out reverse trap Usagi (much to some fans' dismay) and changed a few things involving Nephrite, as they did the other Generals. Tuxedo Mask will get his time to shine very soon, but as you've seen, he's not the white knight who points out the obvious to the ditzy girl as in the original anime.

Each and every one of the girls so far has played that same video game. Anyone notice that? So it's not even like a token thing; they're all gamers, and action gamers, as if it's totally normal.

That video game plays a certain role which I won't say much more about, but you may have gotten some ideas about already.

It's a lot of fun to see a newcomer to the source material analyze it for the first time. Thanks for sharing, as usual.

Pretty good episode this time. Little bits of wonky animation and dialogue, but still good overall. They changed quite a bit from the manga but the story was all there. Ritsuko's VA makes an appearance. Also did a lot of fixing to the OP as well, which made it look much better and more accurate.

Yeah, I was super excited when I saw the hair color change in the OP. I also loved Sailor Mercury's attack in this episode... it looked weak at first, but then POW! Go, Mercury!

Usagi's cluelessness, though... how could she be surprised that Tuxedo knew she is Sailor Moon? -o-;

Still, he was right about her ability to make people smile, and befriend them. Usagi is a sweetie.

Yeah, the fight in this episode was pretty good (albeit short). And, of course, Usagi got her first awesome moment with Moon Healing Escalation (did she learn it so early in the storyline last time?)

Another really good episode overall. Some of it didn't flow as well as the manga, but the majority was good. Finally got to see my favorite Sailor Guardian show up.

Next time preview  SPOILER: Show

Episode 7 was very touching with the setting up of the Usagi/Mamo-chan romance although putting in that flashback of Luna saying he might be tricking her just makes the black cat come off as more of a cold hearted bitch :irked: and ruining what was otherwise a stellar moment. ^_^ I do have to comment on the Sailor V title, I thought that once she showed up that she would name herself Sailor Venus but even the next episode title has her classified as Sailor V. Just that i'm not much of a manga reader so I can't tell if it's how it happened there.
