Anime that Jump the Shark

Postby scarmullet » Sun Feb 06, 2011 6:27 pm

What are some animes that you have seen that jump the shark.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M ... ngTheShark

I noticed Dragon Ball GT jumped the shark, the episode where they resurrected Frieza and Cell. They were obviously trying to get a big boost in ratings there. In all fairness, all of GT is a shark jump, but that part in particular really got me.

How about you?

Most series that go over 50 episodes tend to do this.
Also known as Cowboy Dev.

Riki-Oh managed to Jump the Shark with every new story arc. It eventually got to where every other chapter was a shark jump moment.

I suppose DBZ jumped the shark somewhat with the Buu Saga. It wasn't a terrible shark jump or anything, but it was noticeable.

I don't use trope logic and I have never encountered a series that "jumped the shark"; closest thing I've seen is Code Geass when Lelouch uses his geass on Yufi (I spell that right?).

That reminds me. All of Code Geass season 2. It was a mess from the very begging.

People use terms like "plot device" and "macguffin" and "plot armor" AND think they're real, which is even more adorable.

I suppose DBZ jumped the shark somewhat with the Buu Saga. It wasn't a terrible shark jump or anything, but it was noticeable.

Dragonball jumped the shark after the piccolo arc ended, then it jumped over an exponentially greater amount of sharks with every new plot arc. By the time the buu saga rolled around it was jumping over 9000 sharks with every bound.

closest thing I've seen is Code Geass when Lelouch uses his geass on Yufi (I spell that right?).

Ah yes code geass, a series that jumped over so many sharks that even twin drive says it might be dangerous to go swimming.

Although the above two examples would disagree with what I'm about to say, shark jumping isn't always bad. Eva actually did do some shark jumping, but that is one of the things that made eva great. Also panty and stocking jumped over a megladon shark in the last episode.

no. 1 ALL TIME anime shark jumper indeed

some snarky bastards will say Evangelion and will point to Episode 24 and Kaworu, but I'm not one of them

I would include Blood: The Last Vampire becoming the TV series Blood+, what a drop-off in awesomeness

I would also mention Bleach after Episode 55 or 63

and yes, "jumping the shark" is soooooo '90's

I'm pretty sure terms you learn in school (like "Plot Device", for instance) don't count as "Trope Logic".

I'd say Evangelion Jumped the shark as early as episode 8 with the introduction of Asuka. "Shinji and Rei arent interesting enough? Lets give them a red haired German bitch"

Your predictions are as accurate as Nostradamus. You said they would point towards Episode 24, I said 8.
