You know, maybe this was all a part of the original "pitch" that Anno presented to Gainix for Evangelion.
Anno: "Yes, you see it's about Relationships and Communication. I was thinking of having the main character pilot his father's robot, who's actually his mother. Sort of a representation of his..."

That was rather funny...although...I think a mentioning of the fact there will be a warm-water penguin in the show for comic relief should have been mentioned somewhere...

(2) Because some of them are helluva funny. (Or can potentially be used as weapons against The Evil Power.)

Case in point: Here are the first few pages from a doujin short called "Yakedo shisoo kimi ni tsumetasa ni" (which I would be able to translate if I knew WTF the "shisoo" part meant). Okay, I'll admit -- I actually bought an H-doujinshi anthology just for this. I know, I have no taste.

Out of necessity, these are censored. (Boo hoo!) But I hope you like my solution. I ought to patent it. I didn't bother with Rei's nipples because she's, well, Rei.
