I thought I'd take a look at a couple more scenes to compare how certain lines were handled by the fan-subbers vs the 'official' translation by ADV. I'll look at one scene where I think that ADV's translation is a definite improvement, and one where they definitely blew it.
First up, lets look at what I always considered probably the funniest scene in the whole series: the Alternate Univerese in Ep26. Here's the Literal Translation Project's take on the scene in question. Presumably this is the closest translation available to what they are actually saying in Japanese; if that's so, then all I can say is that AU Rei has got quite a mouth on her!

Misato: Rejoice, boys! Today, I introduce the transferee
everybody is talking about.

Rei: I am Ayanami Rei. Nice to meet you!

Shinji: WOW!

Rei: You! You are that stupid guy that peeped at my
panties this morning.

Asuka: Stop it! Don't say such a thing.
You're the one who showed Shinji!

Rei: You s***, why are you covering for that guy?
Does that mean you two are a couple?

Asuka: Childhood friend, you b****!

Hikari: Stop! It's time for school. Be quiet!

Misato: Well, You're having fun. I am curious too.
Continue.

Students: Laugh

The Renewal fan-subs use a revised version of the LTP, and, as you can see, they've cleaned up Rei's (and Asuka's) potty mouth:

I dunno, but somehow this all falls a bit flat... Rei's punchline just doesn't have much punch to it.

Here's the familiar ADV version of the scene; I think that in this case, their freer tranlation is a lot more natural sounding and funnier:

As many time as I've watched Ep26, I never fail to laugh out loud when Rei says "Are you guys doing it?!" Of course in the dub, she says something about "riding his baloney pony", which is a bit overboard, and just stupid... Image

That's why I never watch dubs; a line that bad is unworthy to be associated with EVA.

Are you sure that isn't "bologna pony"?Image

*snort* Most of the major re-writes in the dub were the humor, mind you. I don't think doing that affects the story that much, if at all.

I have to agree... the scene is without some of its power (& comedY) without the "doing it" line. And what's this about a baloney? Umm never mind, forget I asked, I don't want to know...

Yes that is true (well, I guess humor can have characterial importance though) and as entitled as you are to your like for the dub, not everyone cares about the story alone. Some people don't want to hear about baloney ponies unless they absolutely have to.

Well, I care about the characters, too. I think most of the rewritten jokes captured the "essence" of the humor, just beefed it up a little.

And the ep 26 AU is scary no matter what language it's in, so I don't care much about what's done to it.

Though I have to wonder what the hell "Carpetbagged" means in that context Image

No, sorry but "baloney pony" is such a terrible line that it makes me think that AWL must have written it herself.

In what way do you find the ep 26 AU scary?

Erm...Matt Greenfield wrote the adapted scripts for the TV series, as I recall.

It just *is* scary, okay? Image

This is an example of a questionable translation by ADV, one which has lead countless viewers astray (perhaps because ADV was misinterpreting the point of this scene themselves).
Here is the scene in Ep21 where Misato gets her gun and ID/pass back:
http://homepage.mac.com/csf2860/Kare_wa/01.jpg

http://homepage.mac.com/csf2860/Kare_wa/02.jpg

http://homepage.mac.com/csf2860/Kare_wa/03.jpg

Now virtually every bozo that claims that Misato killed Kaji points to this scene as 'evidence', citing the line "Where is he?' as indicating that she is going to go after him herself and 'take care' of the situation. (This despite the fact that Security Guy just said that the "problem has been solved.")
The problem is that "Where is he?" is not[/u] what she actually says in Japanese. She says "Kare wa?", which translated literally = "As for him?".
(In Japanese "Where is he?" would be "Kare wa, doko desu ka?").
The Renewal fansubs use the Literal Translation Project script for this scene:
http://homepage.mac.com/csf2860/Kare_wa/09.jpg

http://homepage.mac.com/csf2860/Kare_wa/10.jpg

http://homepage.mac.com/csf2860/Kare_wa/11.jpg

and, as you can see, they translate "Kare wa?" as "How is he?", which tends to imply that Misato is concerned about Kaji's fate, not contemplating rubbing him out herself...
I myself always thought that "What about him?" sounded like the best translation of that line.
AND... if you check out ADV's translation of the scene in Ep21', on the new Resurrection DVD, you'll see that it turns out they agree with me, and have corrected their mistake:

Here is yet more evidence that 'Who killed Kaji?" is the topic that will never die....

Probably because veteran n00bs continue to proliferate faulty theories, the amateur n00bs pick them up and nurture them, and the cycle repeats itself despite otaku's best efforts.

This doesn't have to do with FANsubs per se, but I'm rather hoping ADV fixes Kaworu's sub lines in "Genesis Reborn" or whatever they're calling it.

Ughhh....

:dead:

I can't believe people are still *doing* this. I didn't think any established character had killed Kaji EVER, from day 1!. So, I blame the people who interpreted it that way.

I just looked at the LTP script, and watched that episode dubbed-with-the-subs-on (another odd habit of mine), last Saturday, and didn't see anything too bad, perhaps a bit dodgy (and some things I was disappointed the dub missed), so...what are you talking about?

*curious now, and perhaps a bit jealous if she's missed something*

Perhaps this has been said before, too lazy to read, but Psychlo-Anime's Eva fansub is a DVD-rip, whose source is, no doubt, ADV's edition of Eva. Thus, its subtitles are the same as the ADV DVD's.

Hehe, if you heard the things the spaniards put on Eva fansubs and official releases, youll drop dead. Stuff like "Anti Tank Field", "First Airplane" (Eva-01) or the infamous "S^2 core", "Trabis", "Dummy plug pilots", just makes the day.

One of the instances where ADV's dub is more accurate than the subtitles. Quite paradoxically, the subtitles warp "Lilim" into "humanity". :goof:

Abso-frelling-hilarious! Calling Yui-sama an airplane is decidedly worse than using the "U" word. Image

Technically, Anno's not the fellow who came up with that. He just borrowed the term and took huge liberties with it.

I think A.T. field makes pretty sound sense.

The Angels' AT Fields cause absolute terror because we can't get through them (without the help of the Evangelions)

Our human AT Fields cause absolute terror, being the border between our outward selves and the things we want to keep inside ourselves. It certainly causes absolute terror, look at Asuka's mind-rape scene.

YEah, but the funniest thing on the Anti Tank Field issue, is that in the opening is clearly written in roman character, big that fill up the whole screen "ABSOLUTE TERROR FIELD". You can't mess that up!

Ahh, I forgot, instead of Supersolenoid, now its the Supercelluloid theory. Perhaps that might explain, not the Angels unlimited energy, but the woobling in Evas first video release.

That?

But...my DVD subs use "Lillim". Maybe it was on the VHS sub only?
