sorry to have to contradict you guys, but LOTR was horrible. So much of the book was skipped. The sword is practically non-existent, they skip maybe five chapters in Fellowship, they end Two Towers early, and they added scenes that have no real base in the book. I do agree that it is good for an adaptation, but it could have been more accurate.
regarding the Evangelion movie that never will be, who cares, if it comes out it wont be for years. if it does come out, it might gain Evangelion some recognition, but probably not much. as some people have said, it might spawn a good video game, but that game would not be very accurate. if this ever comes out I will be very surprised. if it is a good movie, I will be even more surprised, if it is good enough to deserve to be called Evangelion, they ill have cheated.

Could have been, perhaps, but if you watch the bonus materials on the extended edition DVDs (like the commentaries and documentaries), it's pretty clear that all of the changes were made for a reason. And, despite various bounds of inaccuracy, Boyen gave a nice disclaimer when she said that the books will always be untouchable, and the movies represent one group of fans' attempt to adapt the books for the big screen. The makers of the films have put their heart and soul into its production, and I think that says a lot.
Now, then, this is hardly a LotR forum, though I suppose the whole Weta Workshop connection with the live-action NGE project will doom Jackson's films to come up time and time again.

Amen to that.NakedEYE666 wrote:One thing I'd like to point out - just like the Lord of the Rings project, which is 3 movies adapted out of an extreme novel made up of 6 stories split into 3 groups. This caused the movie to be completely without one of the main affects of the Lord of the Rings, the extreme passing of time, days and days of travelling, waiting in anticipation for war, things like that. Tolkien did this quite well. Evangelion strongly relies on a fair ammount of free time, to show basic relationships and establish mood. Obviously, a film would be extremely rushed and without such things.
thx3876 wrote:But i still feel that if they were to come up with a uniqe angle on the sci-fi aspects, this film could be worthwhile.
Considering those few concept art pictures we've had, uniqueness is not the first word that comes into my mind. It seems they are pushing the visual style in the direction of dark goth-scifi, which is the worst possible cliché that you can do nowadays.
And I'm also sceptical of visual skills of WETA workshop. God knows I'm an oldsk00l special effects fan and I hate this digital porn most scifi and action films are nowadays. FX-nerds have nowadays only one guideline: "More! Bigger! Faster! Higher! Look at them there polygons!!!" My friends told me that the "Battle of Zion" in Matrix Revolutions is going to be the coolest thing ever, yeah, but what I saw was an epileptic, incoherent, blooper-filled design-disaster. Lookey, lots of mechs, lots of squids, Ctrl-C & Ctrl-V. It wasn't even fun, it was simply boring. But this is just my problem .
There are three things in this live-action project that I truly fear: Firstly, the least of my fears, destruction of NGE's public image. Granted, not many people even know what the hell NGE is, but imagine this scene after the movie comes out and, surprisingly, sucks balls:
(Fonzie is wearing his old NERV leather jacket, when he's spotted by a threatening group of teenagers.)
Leader of teen posse: "Oh gross, that movie was the gayest thing since Dungeons and Dragons!"
Fonzie: "Kids, you don't understand. This has nothing to do with that new film, the original tv-show was actually really sweet!"
Teen scum 1: "Original tv-show?"
Teen scum 2: (shakes his head) "Never heard of."
Leader of teen posse: "Same here. I think this guy is some sort of crazy poser. Let's kick his ***!"
Fonzie: "Aaargh!"
That was a slightly exaggerated example, but I hope it makes my point clear.
The second thing I fear is that the live-action version will spoil some major plot points for new, potential fans of the anime. It cannot spoil everything, since whatever happens, they'll have to remove or cut off at least 90% of original stuff, like religious references, sexual frustrations, blood, the ending and other little things like that. But still, they might keep stuff like Yui being inside Eva 01 and the Eva 03 incident. Think about it, is it very fun to watch this type of mysterious and foreshadowing series when you know what's going to happen? N00bs would be doomed.
And my third fear, the greatest horror of them all: This kind of scifi-films aimed for teen audiences are marketing tools developed to sell additional crap, like toys, comics and computer games. If the film doesn't flop completely, there will be an animated kids' cartoon too (examples: Men In Black, Godzilla...): And before you know it, starting next Saturday morning: Neon Genesis Evangelion Revisited - American style!!!

Sorry, it's not me, I just own the picture copyrights (that idiot actually sold them to me). I wish I had a lady-killer face like that...

Reichu wrote:Comparing literature-->Hollywood adaptations to anime-->Hollywood adaptations is a wee bit loose, IMO.
Also, what I meant by "vague" was the similarities between the scenes from episode 24 and "Two Towers", just to clear that up.
Loose possibly, but not at all unsimilar. There are tons of parrallels. You're taking a perfected story, and adapting it for something else, in both cases the story must be shortened, edited, and reworked. Also, both cases have the potential Hollywood corruption. Books by the likes of J.R.R. Tolkine & Michael Crichton come from a pretty free environment, but the movies must be made popular. In that, I think Evangelion has even more to lose... well, I can't go that far, because there are things inherent in the taking from book to visual that are easily corruptable, but still it does have a lot to lose.

New tagline: "We kill angels - dead!"

Oh wait, can't have angels. Pardon me, the correct form is "We kill aliens - dead." Now we just need to add a little stars & stripes to the NERV-logo and the commercial side is taken care of!

How would the live action gonna be? Like a series of movies? And most probably there will be some parts to be omitted and edited cuz of Eva's very "disturbing" nature.
And I was thinking about how would the producers come up with the idea of the Children's costumes? We see the anime as a snuggle-fit rubber like uniform and take note -- the Children had nothing underneath that rubber suit. How are they gonna come up with that?
And how about the fight scenes? Between the mechs and the Angels? I think they would do a good work about that.

Since when has Eva not been comercialized. Eva may be virtualy unknown to the mainsteam in the US (or other parts of the world), but in Japan you can buy Asuka soapdishes for cripesakes! Eva is a commercial enterprise already, not a religon or an answer to lifes problems.
And as far as casting goes, the trend in most "adaption" films has been moving towards using "unknown" actors in key roles for some time. And who says this movie will have to be toned down from the animation. There's absolutely no reason that the content from an animated television series couldn't be adapted into a PG-13 feature film.
Fear not live-action Evangelion.
Fear Asuka & Rei wedding cake toppers.

A river of blood isn't a reason?
Eva is definately R-stuff, but since it is not a well known brand in the west it has to be toned down to PG. It cannot rely on a huge surefire audience like LOTR. No way, it has to look and feel like the Phantom Menace to make any profit.
Well, this is just a speculation of course. Those, ahem, 100 million dollars have not yet manifested out of nowhere, have they?

I tried to put Ayanami Rei on my wedding cake, but the wife just wouldn't allow it... so we had two wedding cakes made. See, in marriage there is allways a good sollution to every problem. (What's that? A divorce? Don't talk of such things Rei... oops, I mean uh.... what's your "real" name again honey?)
But about that website.... that's just really really really terrible. Accept for the Lorenz one, that was funny. The other ones where terrifyingly scary.
