And EVA isn't the same because...?
NGE was a damned good anime
EoE was an anime masterpiece
And Rebuild is nothing short of epic
Long live the EVAs!!

Actually, I was very glad with how Deathly Hallows was handled. If they had done the two movies together, it would have been either far too long or far too abridged.

And seriously, if Rebuild has had any problems so far, being too long is not one of them. I would much rather that they have two full length movies that come out a few years apart. I don't mind the wait, and it will be worth it to have a story that's more substantive.

This is DEFINATELY NOT happening. Q and Final were never planned to be full length features independently, they were, as ANN reported, going to be about 45 mins in total and shown together (while charging full ticket price for both, thus Gainax/Khara being a cash cow as usual). At best, we could hope for a full length Q at the expense of there not being a 4.0 and thus Q would be the Final film, which may explain why it's taken so long, that they are merging Q and Final into one film: Evangelion 3.00 (soon to be 3.33).

It's not quite that simple anymore.

Well, it was announced as clearly as the rest of the films were announced. (It had the numbers on the screen just as gray-shaded as the rest of the films' numbers.) They just didn't know what they were doing with it yet. They still don't.

This is the trailer I'm referring to with the "?" (also it says Final, not 4.0):

I don't get the idea that because they decided to expand and rewrite the 2nd film a little bit and take their time making these films instead of blowing through them in 2008 that suddenly every thing they ever said must be out the window. If anything, they will make longer films, but I don't think they'd drop Final.

^ I think the question is whether or not 3.0 and FINAL will be separate films, or rather released as one giant film, like Air and My Purest Heart for You in EoE. Judging from everything that's happened with the franchise since 2008, it would make sense for Anno and Co. to extend the films and make them two separate films with separate release dates. But there's no official word stating that, and the only official statement Anno released on the issue was in 2007, when he stated that the series should have been done by now. (I think they originally wanted to finish FINAL in 2010, though I might be mistaken...)

I am going to assume that the original schedule only meant anything as long as the Rebuild movies followed the "Let's just rehash the TV series with better graphics" notion.

Now that they are a complete retelling of the story I think it's safe to say that anything can happen and if Anno wishes it, the movies will go past 4.0.

I personally hope that 3.0 and 4.0 are both full length features. Studio Khara still has to go through all of the flashbacks which will undoubtedly have changed a little and with the new aspects of the story it might even take longer to explain everything. Also we have to remember that the story could take an entirely different route from the TV series, Kaji could survive, and the descent to terminal dogma could very well be the only similarity with the series. My point is that we've seen a huge divergence from the TV series with 2.0 and it would be futile to expect the story to be ending just because we are dawning on the time the series ended.

Sorry for necroposting, but this was the thread closest to my subject that I could find.

Sooo I googled a few animation production terms, and one of the hits was an event in someone's Google Calendar, and it seems it's someone at Khara. There are entries from January 2008 and on. October 2013 for the latest.

It's kind of interesting to see. Like, "EVAQBパート作打ち" for 6 pm on February 6th 2012, which should mean that was when they had a meeting to assign animation cuts to animators for the B part, i.e. the second part (out of three?), of Eva:3.0. Also in February are "piano data collection" and "piano location hunting". And they had a 処理打ち for the A part in September of 2011, which I think is some kind of meeting that follows finished storyboards (but precedes cut assignments), so that was maybe about the time that the storyboards were finished.

Don't expect to see some secret info on 4.0 in there, but it might come in handy if someone is interested in making a project timeline.

Well that is very interesting. Whoever that is they seem to be part of the 3DCG team. There's a lot of mentions of various 3D software. There's also quite a few mentions of location hunting. Some just general, others specifically for the piano. Another one is throughout the Keihin region, which might be where some of those shots of the real world come from as the Door of Guf opens.

Anyone know how to archive all that just in case it disappears?

Location hunting? You mean like artistic reference?

I guess they looked for a place where they could film the movements of the hands, as shown in the Booklet for the movie.
