It wouldn't be placed in front of her given name, though, because it's not Asian in origin.

Maybe it's not Marie, maybe it's Mary?

Mary is マリー or メリー. (Latter is the American pronunciation.)

Sorry, kids, her name is "Mari", which is quite Japanese, but is QUITE COINCIDENTALLY included in the name "Maria". And just for those who don't know yet, the Japanese use "Maria" for Biblical characters that English-speakers call "Mary". (This is why "Maria-sama ga miteru" becomes "The Virgin Mary is Watching".)

And Kaoru is written カヲル. Don't the Eva people like to mess around with katakana?

That doesn't change that Mari and Kaworu/Kaoru are Japanese names. That longer "i" sound makes a much bigger difference than "wo" (which makes no difference at all when spoken) does.

I could have sworn I mentioned the possibly of Mari's name being PRS sometime back... but it's good you're reminding people about that.

Also, I dunno if my question was ever answered (I think the thread got locked and I don't remember anybody replying to me), but does the chorus in the instrumental part of the Eva op say in Latin(?) "Maria", "Faria" or something totally different?

A possible S/M pairing?
I'm an A/S shipper and Soryu and Shikinami are one in the same.

^_^ It could be. But we might be taking it too literal.

I like the sound of the name Urunami.

But I don't know the logistics about Japanese text so I'm in the dark on the issue.

As an aside wouldn't it be hilarious to see Mari's name be Soryu.

That'd be an epic troll but Soryu uses 2 kanji. We need something with 3 characters.

One kanji for her rank, two for her family name?

Not out of the question but rank typically follows the entire name.

Oh, i am a total retard. It's *** Mari *******. Three placeholders for the Asian surname, seven placeholders for the foreign one. That makes much more sense. [/obvious]
