And then there's train wrecks like Asuka and Shinji. Where Asuka's self-destructive high maintenance personality would drive Shinji quickly to one of two options- Suicide OR Super Brutal Murder That You Read About On Page One.

The S/A scenario I see is one day Shinji comes home from doing the shopping to find Asuka in bed with Touji (having decided she needs a man in her bed), then six weeks later, the coffee-pot scene.

I've been in my fair share of relationships (oh and some of them have been real disasters- my current relationship is bugging the fuck out of me cause even after all the shit we've done she's still so damn modest) and no matter how bad or good they've been they have never gotten anywhere near the destructiveness of A/S. I mean I can't see one point past Episode 12 where those two characters actually ENJOY each others company.
Maybe I'm just lucky in love.

You are confusing two different levels, between inside the narrative and looking at it from the outside where the names deliberately happen to have a common theme running through the whole cast.

Even if "wankanery" were real vernacular, it has been officially stated that Shinji intended to commit suicide when he was standing at that one popular suicide spot in that one episode. I don't think there's enough evidence to be sure whether he actually intended to drown himself at the beginning of EoE, though.

EDIT: Oh boy, now we have two threads all about Asuka's new name.
