You can see the sync clips are part of her character so this leads me to the conclusion that she is in fact a pilot of one of the new Evangelions. I know this has been stated before but maybe this is the prof needed to come to a full conclusion. Again, if this is old and I did spend a min or 2 searching around to see if I could find anything.

I feel that Anno is simply looking at the fanfics aspect of things a little to much. The picture says "girlfriend of glasses" now for those who played Girlfriend of Steel..Could this simply be another character that Shinji will have emotion for thus giving Asuka something to be well..Asuka about?

This is just fanart from Pengel. Whether or not Mari is a pilot really isn't known at this point. Girlfriend of Glasses is the name of the doujin Pengel introduced his own take of Mari in.
