Uh, what? EOE had just as happy an ending as the TV ending, if you pay attention.
Oh please! It's depressing. Yes, it does show a glimpse of hope. Infact, I'll even say that the whole film was about hope. But the brutality, and sadness in the final scene is over-whelming, and can be very depressing. It definitly depressed me for a couple of weeks. And watching "Twin Peaks" at the same time didn't help either. But in the end, the TV ending is WAY more up-lifting, and optimistic. While the ending to "EoE" is pessimistic at best. I will admit that it is probably the most beautiful, disturbing, and thought provocking thing ever put on screen. But I cannot deny the sadness that it invokes inside of me.
The fate of destruction is also the joy of rebirth.

It's stange that "Evangelion" became such a hit. All the characters are so sick!- Hideaki Anno
