Just FYI, before casual rebranding of Eva-02's weapons gets further out of hand: The Revoltech stuff rather clearly refers to them as "prog knives".

However, to me, this makes them look very strange (ironically).

They look strange to you now because their human form automatically elicits expectation from your mind (that of seeing a human being). Our brains react to visual cues to create reactions, and often rely on familiarity to generate these cues (it is just more efficient that way). So when you look at the new eva your mind tells you to be ready for a human being, but then you recognize something that is most certainly not human, and thus a feeling of uncertainty will wash over you - because your brain was convinced of something at first, only to be denied its expectation. That is why human like creatures make us feel uncomfortable, more so than even a completely inhuman monster.

Well, I'd say since 02 is the first of the combat series, it technically isn't a true combat type, but a test type of the combat type eva. Thus Eva Test Type 02. I am not against this name change. Hell, they change character names, why not other names.

It's correctly "Production Model" here. For reasons beyond my comprehension, some of the "bonus parts" for Eva-02 are listed under Eva-01 (as bonus parts for Eva-02...), and they include the "New Configuration Shoulder Armor x2" (one guess as to what that is) and "Progressive Knives x 2".

Don't worry, though. Since we already have a precedent in place...

...Eva-02's knives will surely get a needlessly long special designation later.

I always found the prog knives mysterious. why progressive? and I'm fairly sure in the manga their design changed.

There was a design emphasis on "giant human" (i.e., "this isn't a giant robot shaped like a human"), but there was the whole "oni" twist to it. I thought we got something both familiar and delightfully "demonic" in the end.

If they just look like big people with strange heads...I dunno, I don't really like it.

Nor I. I'm on record for saying it a lot, but... I find the conflicting aesthetic of raw power, evident in esp. the broad chest and shoulders, and "alien" gracility, in the slender torso and limbs, to be a huge part of what makes an Eva an Eva, and what makes their design concept appealing. The movie redesigns have parted with this, and I wish I could say why.

A lot of the animators went overkill in the original show with the wacky proportions, but Yamashita's concept art tends to take a more moderate and realistic approach (though sometimes he goes overkill in the opposite direction). I wish that, instead of completely abandoning the old aesthetic for the "person in a suit" thing, they had just "moderated" what we saw in the original show. The new look doesn't bother a lot of people -- in fact, some people PREFER the Evas the way they look in the movies -- but no matter how hard I try to get used to it, something about it just strikes me as... tacky? Awkward? Not sure what the right word is.

I still love the Evas, either way, but I'm not happy about what they've done. Not butthurt, but not happy either.

There's more about this (with lots of pictures) in the "Eva-02 New Design" thread (see the thread list).

Electric Sachiel wrote:Eva unit 01 can finally crouch down and have his hands at touching the ground.

And with those new pics of Eva Unit 03, he looks more blood thirsty then ever with his new red colouring....

I'll just leave this here.

Its almost as if they don't want you to know that they are living beings under the restraints and armor. They left parts out of 1.0 that would show that they are Human. I was really looking forward to the part where they show part of her head but alas...

They did show a very human-looking hand in the battle with Shamshel. They might still be rethinking the head design, and will show us the head later. I have to say that I also missed that scene where Shiji got his first eye-to-eye look at his Eva.

Yeah, I thought the implications of "these are not human" were a lot stronger in Rebuild. The other thing that really stood out to me Unit 01 cutting out the entry plug from Unit 00. The squishy sounds there made it pretty obvious that he wasn't going through metal.

The robots in Metropolis, "Box" from Logan's Run, SkyNet, a few Asimov robots... it's a very long list!
And don't forget Jet Alone in Ep 7.
