Eva actually helped me snap out of my Depression/Aniexty (although I still suffer from that!), espeically my Personal Downward Spiral last Spring. The ending of EoTV/EoE, in my mind at least (and I know at least a few others here agree with me on this!) is one of hope and that life CAN be good, although there are bad things about it, too.

The movie was a crazy retelling of a small chunk of the series. I had actually watched the movie before the series and thought it was pretty weird, especially the car bit at the end.

It's "despise" rather than hate; and yes it is only the Ikari-kun of EoE that attracts that response.

Well, the metaphorical glass appears rather more than half empty to me.

I suppose I should have used a less loaded word than "desolate", perhaps for the drained, emotionally dead state that EoE engenders in the susceptible -- emotionally purged, perhaps.

On the Utena sub-thread - it is no coincidence that one of my favourite NGE fan fics is a hybrid with Utena; the two series feel complementary in many ways.
