I synthesized people's gripes with the episode in an video (here if you haven't seen it). I took some data from fans and the episode was the bottom of the list, both in terms of it being liked the least, and hated the most.

I can't find it right now, but AnnoCinema has done some breakdowns of editing and shot composition of various episodes, and I recall him getting to Magmadiver and being like "man, even the visual composition in this lazy/awful".

8 might be my favourite episode of the first half actually. And 9 is excellent too. I'd say 10 is pretty different from both.
