Shinji is also the reincarnation of a noble hero of Jerusalem, and Asuka is the reincarnation of his primary concubine. The latter got herself stoned to death for being too fiery, and the former, in his misery, found temporary solace with an albino priest. However, this priest then revealed himself to be a messenger of evil, and Shinji's previous self, knowing he would soon be stoned for homosexual deeds, promptly drowned himself at the shore of a lake. (The first shot of 1.0 is an allusion to this.)

I think the 'sequel' bit is like reincarnation. Not any orthodox 'sequel' as such, and as seen from Anno's own words (posted previous page) as said by Reichu, that there are repetition. It is in the same mentality as the whole process of 'reincarnation'. And I believe, that this helps to bring about my thoughts on how Nietzsche's ideas on 'Eternal Recurrance' comes into being.

I'm really hoping that's how it turns out!
It would be lame if there was no hint at connection with the original series. I like the idea that its hinted (so far) that Kaworu might have a memory of the past universe.

However, it would also be really lame if it was all explained explicitly as a sequel.

I think I prefer the idea that he's some kind of creepy stalker.

Sequel-theory haters.
Seems like some people can even take a second to consider NME being a sequel, they be like
Random Sequel lover: Hey dude i definitely think it's a sequel i mean the red sea blablabla BS.
Sequel Theory Hater: NO, BITCH SHUT UP
Random Sequel lover: Well dude it may not be a sequel but there's a lot of things hinting it could be.
Sequel Theory Hater: BLABLABLABLA i don't want to listen to this bs blablablabla, I'll throw random arguments that may not even be related to this at all, I'll say things that are yet not even proved, but seem more likely to me just because it shatters away any possibilities of NME being a sequel.
Random Sequel Lover: But what about kaworu's lines at the end of 2.22? how can you explain that?.
Sequel theory hater: I am somehow a time traveler and I've travel to the future, and so i know kaworu met Shinji when he was a little kid, oh did i mention i'm buzz lightyear?.

Lmao this totally made my day, indeed seems like no one likes to discuss the sequel theory at all, and seeing other threads/posts about this, it seems like it's a never ending battle.

I mean, predictability is the central attraction and the narrative hook that we've all come to expect from the Evangelion franchise. How come Anno can't realize this? Twice? - FreakyFilmFan4ever

Well, in my opinion, Anno won't ever dismiss or confirm this theory. At least, that's how we got to know him. And that would be ok for me.

What people seem to ignore when bringing up the sequel theory is that this is intended as a rebuild, which means something was destroyed. If we are to assume that the world never returned to normal following the events of EoE, then it makes sense that the universe would reset itself in order to create balance. Think of it like this, after the World Trade Centers fell, the U.S. decided to build the Freedom Tower as a reminder of the events of 9/11. While the building remains in the same area as the original towers, the design of the building is radically different from the originals that stood before. So when we see these new buildings, we are reminded of what they represent, the events of the past. This is what Rebuild is doing, reminding us of what came before, while still changing and moving towards the future.

A tad, perhaps. If we use language like this for storylines, where do we go for stuff that's really bad... like, I don't know, child rape? Or 9/11? What's the next level after "utterly disgusting" and "curse its name"? Maybe we should save those phrases for things more troubling than anime.

Sorry...

Anyways... Do people really hate sequel theory? First time I saw it it made no sense, but I don't hate it, per se, just, y'know, it's a bit mindbending. For me at least.

Let's face it, any reboot of a big series is a pretty dumb idea. I think we're all a little worried about Anno.
