Yeah. You read right. This is for everything that doesn't have anything to do with Eva.

www.Megatokyo.com

Home of one of the best web comics on line.

Well I see from the wasting time online thread that we have a few megatokyo fans on the board. Now I've never liked the MT board its big and old an elitest.

We don't have that problem here now do we

So what do we all like about MT?

The arts ok.

The characters draw me in, and some time can even make me laugh out loud. Thats very a rare thing people.

Piro, if only I could have cool hair and hot asian women intrested in me :P

Largo, I didn't know hwat l33t was until I read this comic nuff said.

Ping, Awww a kid sister in a box, and she can lift a buss to!

I could keeps going through the entire cast. Old fred sure knows how to write intresting funny characters.

You're in for a long, at times confusing, and usually boring read. I can't say I ever got used to the art style either, though I'll admit it has improved drastically since the beginning.

Really there's nothing to the boards. Every one there seems to have a superiority/inferiority complex and/or is trying really hard to fit in.
The purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure poor reasoning, and inhibit clarity. With a little practice, writing can be an intimidating and impenetrable fog!

I like sinfest's art, but as for a good read I prefer a thousand times "Count Your Sheep". Adrian Ramos made me recover faith in webcomics.

It's ok. I like Ping & Miho. Robots rock. Goth girls rock. I just wish I knew what the Hell Miho actually IS. Vampire? Robot? Or just some weird girl?

It'd really love it if they showed more of Yuki's dad & his Ingram.

But GOD DAMN, Piro is whiny! There are times he makes Shinji look like Ryoma-fucking-Nagare!

I'm willing to take a stabe at the miho thing and say she's just an ordinary girl. Shes smart, and with lots of physical and emotional probelms, but not supernatural.

YEs old fred sure as hell channels Shinji ino piro some times, but praise the space pope hes not nearly as bad most of the time.

Eh,, I liked it a lot better when the real Largo was co-writer and it wasnt all about Piro's emo-ness. Now all the cool Largo stuff and nerdy comedy takes a backseat to the lovestory-dating sim stuff.

I quite like it. Especially Miho. I really have something for that type of character.
Normality is overrated

Kaworu/Asuka - give it a chance!
(Clarification - I still like Asuka/Shinji)

I like Megatokyo because, underneath all the faux-shojo stuff, it's a statement on the elastic nature of our perception of what's "real" and what isn't that messes with the reader in a certain way so that SO MANY THINGS slip underneath the reader's radar, only for it to bite the reader in the ass unexpectedly.

Megatokyo was actually decent before it became Fred-chan's super kawaii masturbatory fantasy land.
He was warrior and mystic, ogre and saint, the fox and the innocent, chivalrous, ruthless, less than a god, more than a man. There is no measuring Muad'Dib's motives by ordinary standards. In the moment of his triumph, he saw the death prepared for him, yet he accepted the treachery. Can you say he did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? Remember, we speak now of the Muad'Dib who ordered battle drums made from his enemies' skins, the Muad'Dib who denied the conventions of his ducal past with a wave of the hand, saying merely: "I am the Kwisatz Haderach. That is reason enough."

It's actually kind of weird that I like it. Normally I dislike kawaii/moe things.

What can I say? Megatokyo was probably the first webcomic I read, about four years ago, and it resonated with my then-nascent otakuness for some reason. I've encountered Fred and Sarah Gallagher a few times at Otakon (have a Ping sketch that he did for me in Volume 3) and they really are just genuinely nice people. Maybe too nice -- Fred spends all his convention time sketching for fans.

It's been fun watching his art improve -- a lot -- and, for some reason, I like it much more than the typical manga style (one of the main reasons I've never been into manga). Dom's writing is funny, and there's something about the lazily unrolling plot that's just enjoyable to watch. Once I watched more of the source material that inspired him (i.e., Kanon, mahou shoujo), the comic really began to take on a life of its own.

And the MT forums are pretty scary. But I hope that the Myspace teens that seem to populate it look at Fred as some kind of role model; they could do worse. It does make me feel old knowing that Gabe, Tycho, and soon Piro are all having kids.
