Monk Ed: Austin and San Antonio are both much more liberal than the rest of the state. Parts of Dallas and Fort Worth as well (especially Dallas, around the Oak Lawn area and some of the other parts of the city: there's a pretty sizable GLBTQ scene in the Metroplex). And some places are weirdly ambiguous on it, as in: homosexuality is wrong and evil, but we like you, so you're fine.
And then there's a weird way in which Texas kind of...embraces it? When it can get more flamboyant, that is...I mean, Texans are nothing if not egocentric, and if you're going to have GLBTQ folks, you're going to have them bigger and better than anywhere else.
...Texas has a weird love/hate relationship with its more liberated self. At least that's how I've observed it, but I'm not very far on the spectrum of GLBTQ myself (maybe a bit on the Q?), so SawItAge10 would have a much better perspective on it.

That's good to hear about Austin. Funimation headquarters is down there, and I don't want to be in a hyper-conservative place if I ever wind up living there.

Houston has an openly lesbian mayor. Most of the state is pretty open to it. The major cities are all pretty much fine in that regard. Houston, Dallas, Austin, SA, and Fort Worth are all cool and accepting, for the most part. People have a lot of misconceptions about Texans that come from our backward thinking politicians and rural population.

Good call: I read that earlier this month and completely forgot about it.
I mean, for the most part, the cities are blue and okay on that. Once you hit the suburbs and work out from there is when it starts to become less friendly.

I made this thread when it seemed to me that finding fellow queer otaku was to tougher than a needle in a haystack, but now I know there's tons of us out there
Also,
Throws sparkly glitter across the thread and forums~
Huh, I thought I named this thread "Show yourselves"? I don't remember changing it to "Represent"

Gawd, I started it back in 2009. So crazy to think!
No idea who locked it/why regarding the 2014 lock.

Re: GLBTQ Otaku Represent!!
A couple of unpleasant threads spawned in here, and have since been excised. The active mods at the time probably locked the thread so they could split the offending subthreads, and then either forgot to unlock it or decided to leave it be so it could cool down a bit.

Re: GLBTQ Otaku Represent!!
Makes sense, always the problem with forums. Someone tries to do something good and it can end up with unpleasantness. It's why I'm glad I don't admin any anymore.
To keep things on topic, I'm Bi. In the small communities I run in there tends to be quite a few GLBTQ people. It's nice.

Do bi dudes still have it rough with being taken seriously? Seems like people generally accept me being Bi if it happens to come up (not much these days). I do wonder if that's in part being a woman; as women having romantic connections is seemingly naturally accepted compared to 2 men in love. (Sigh, society.)

Personally I've not had many issues but it isn't something that really comes up. I imagine it can vary though, there are still a lot of people out there who don't really take being Bi seriously in general.

Well there are a few factors there, one is that bisexuality is MUCH more common in women than in men and the other is a lot of people still think "girl on girl? aw yeah!" whereas two guys is not appealing to most in the slightest, even massive yaoi fans tend to only ship two guys if they are bishie as fuck which most western men are just not.

Re: GLBTQ Otaku Represent!!
There is also a lot of social pressure on men to be straight, or to hide or ignore homosexual tendencies or non-masculine gender features. With women, it seems that social pressure is greatly reduced: it's ironic, but the sort of objectification which encourages things like lesbianism for male gratification is probably one of the factors that makes it more acceptable (or at least easier to swallow) for society (at least tacitly). In other words, women have more leeway to be gay or bisexual due to the fantasy factor (though that, in and of itself, also presents a long list of misconceptions and problems). You don't really see the same thing in homosexuality.
Rose is right: it's hard to 'package and sell' that to people when men are involved (unless one or both of those men are extremely feminine). It's frankly kind of disappointing that, when you think in the long term about these things, what is or is not socially acceptable really comes down to what individuals themselves are or are not willing to fantasize about concerning other people. It's like that's the block where their empathy is.
As for religious fundamentalists, the best that can be said about that is the old joke about why Baptists don't make love standing up: it might lead to dancing.
