There is nothing to feel insensitive about - you displayed sadness for her; your misinformation of when it occurred need not be a source a guilt. I on the other hand had no idea she even existed until reading what you wrote.
It takes a strong will to commit suicide and it doesn't always have to be a case of someone being trapped in a corner. To some it may be a case of entirely owning yourself - not leaving it up to chance or someone else. Take it yourself so nothing else can.
Others may view it as a simpler/happier/better alternative to life and feel contented in their decision.
I can't help but respect someone who has what it takes to end their own life and appreciate what is required to see it through.

As the old cliche goes, suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. In my own experience treating patients, even the most hardcore biologically-based depression can improve with the correct treatment whether it is medication, therapy, ECT, or something else. Suicide should never be considered an option. (This is, of course, not counting people who wish for medically-assisted suicide due to terminal illnesses.)

There's much truth to saying about crying clowns unfortunately. On the contrary I've never particularly surprised when I learn some famous comedian is depressed mess in real life.

What really shocks me is he stated in an interview (several years back) that he didn't have a sad clown thing going on, but he does have his sad moments like everybody. Of course, people won't publicly speak about private matters like depression/anxiety.
Still a terrible shock. My thoughts and prayers especially go out to his family. :(
