Quite simple. The Japanese suffered from inferior or weak weaponry in a lot of cases, while a lot of the Chinese forces were equipped with far superior weapons. The Nambu pistol was pathetic, while the Mauser C96 "Box Cannon" was as trusty a firearm as one could get. (The Japanese Arisaka Type 96/99 Bolt-action rifles stand against the trend of the Japanese having inferior weaponry, but even these exceptionally strong rifles started to suffer in horrible production quality towards the end of the war)
To be on topic, what do I think of Japan? I'm impressed by Japanese historical precedents, such as the blitzkrieg rise from a medieval feudal society to a nation that could compete with any in Europe, and their ability to bounce back from the horror and ruin of the Second World War and reach new heights of prosperity. There also are the other aspects of Japan that Europeans think about- their aesthetic sense and their overall efficiency (Not counting in the dark side of Japanese society, one which I do have a general idea of now thanks to what I picked up from here).

I suspect the actions of the Japanese biowarfare R&D outfit known as Unit 731 stack up pretty well against what happened in Nanjing. The difference is that the Americans found 731's work to be of potential use against the Soviets after the war, and so hushed it up and let the unit's members off the hook in exchange for their expertise. It was more or less Von Braun and friends all over again.

I'm not asking them to be super-sensitive with their apology like Germany, but at least admitting it happened would be nice.
Japan can be a good country and all, but being completely unapologizing over WWII War Crimes is unacceptable.
