What languages do you know?

Yeah. You read right. This is for everything that doesn't have anything to do with Eva.

English, tourist-get-by French (spoken -- I can read it a lot better than that), very rusty tourist-level German. Fanboy spoken Japanese (kawaii, desu ne?) Some fragments of Spanish and Italian. Very rusty classical Latin; a few words of classical Greek.

Good reading level of Occidental, a smattering of Esperanto, acquaintance with Ceqli

Also 'C', C++, C#, Java, Python, Ruby, JavaScript, old-style Basic, very rusty FORTRAN IV and 77, and a smattering of F# and Erlang

Japanese grammar is almost entirely unlike anything we as speakers of IndoEuropean languages recognise. Pronouns, inflection for number, the notions of temporal inflections, many of the familiar distinctions between parts of speech, not there; instead politeness and formality is baked into the language.

Danish (native), English and German. I'm currently learning Japanese (twice a week for 4hrs).

Then there's the programming languages - the popular ones C,C++,C# and Java. A bit of Perl and shell scripting.

Japanese, English, learing German, used to do French, did a bit of Latin and classical Greek.

Then there is the differnet Japanese dialect I could speak, and I am also learing the Bavarian German dialect.

Can't do programming, as I made my own program that does the programming, so I forgot all programming languages I did. THe only ones I remember very vaguely is HTML.

I really need to read up on my Japanese. Quick lil' protip for anyone intrested; get the Genki book series, they're terrific.

Seconded. The Genki books are really good - we are using them in my Japanese language class.

I'm a native spanish speaker. I've been speaking english for over 16 years. I've studied 10 years of german but habe alles vergessen. I've been doing my ways with Japanese now for over 6 years.

"Rugi ver!" is russian for "Hands up!".

My grandpa thought me that. His family was from Viborg in Finland, which was conquered by the russians in WWII. I went there a year or two ago, and boy what a run-down shithole country. Here I am at the town square

Russian is really not a useful language unless you are trying to go there, want to read Lenin's literature (barely), or you got something to do with oil and gas. Or listening to some Russian opera.

This kid is sitting around reading a book, and an old man walks up to him and asks him what he's doing.
-I'm learning to speak hebrew, for when I go to heaven.
-But what if you go to hell instead?
-Oh, in that case I already know russian.

Russian is sweet, and pretty useful if you want to become an villain. Otherwise it isn't.

Russian will become an useful language in a few more years (decades) once Russia is back as a powerful nation and has fully recovered from all the Yeltsin mess.

And I'm more interested in learning it because I like it, English and Mandarin are the most useful languages in the planet and I already know one of them as a second language and am in the process of learning the other.

I think this topic existed before...

I only really "know" English. I have some familiarity with Japanese and can do a limited amount of (J-->E) translation, but usually not without looking tons of stuff up. I'm basally acquainted with German and Latin. That's it.

do they still teach Latin in schools in America? My parents said they used to decades ago but I think they stopped; another sign of the Decline and Fall of Western Civilization.
