Knowing that Japanese workers work a lot didn't actually sink in until I actually saw salarymen on the trains on weekends and a holiday, and they were wearing their suits. A cousin of mine who works for Bloomberg in Tokyo said that the Japanese workers in her unit aren't told that they need to put in overtime, but do so anyway.

About time is right. The law on taking days off should have been enacted years ago. It also matters that people higher up start following the law, because that would send the message to the Salarymen and OLs that conforming to the law was expected. There's a reason why Miyazaki and Anno are so critical of the Japanese tendency towards conformity.
